Chapter 5:

animal catchers

Whiskers in the wild

Ferey's eyes darted around nervously before he spoke

"I overheard some of the other birds talking last night. There's a group of humans who have been trapping animals in this area. They're taking them to a place called the 'pound'."

Leo felt a shiver run down his spine. He had heard stories about the pound, and none of them were good.

"What do they do to the animals there?"

Ferey's voice was grim

"They put them in cages and then... they either die there or get sent to places far away. Some of them never come back."

Velva growled softly

"We need to be extra careful then. We can't let them catch us."

Leo nodded in agreement, his heart racing. The stakes had just gotten a lot higher.

Ferey flapped his wings nervously

"We should avoid this area completely. There are safer places to hunt and hide."

Leo glanced around, suddenly feeling exposed in the open street

Velva sniffed the air, her ears perked up

"I smell humans nearby. We should move."

The group quickly ducked into an alleyway, pressing themselves against the wall as footsteps approached.

Leo held his breath, his heart pounding in his chest. He could hear the humans talking, their voices getting closer.

Ferey whispered

"They're carrying nets. We need to stay hidden."

The humans walked past the alley, their conversation fading into the distance. Leo let out a sigh of relief, but he knew they couldn't stay there forever.

Velva peeked out cautiously

"The coast is clear. Let's keep moving."

The group continued on, their pace quicker now. Leo couldn't shake the feeling of being hunted, but he refused to let fear paralyze him.

Ferey suddenly took off into the sky, scouting ahead

Leo watched him go, then turned to Velva

"Do you think we'll ever be safe from these humans?"

Velva's expression was somber

"No one is ever truly safe, Leo. But we can be smart and resourceful. That's what keeps us alive."

Leo nodded, taking Velva's words to heart. He had learned that survival wasn't just about strength, but also about using one's wits and staying alert.

Ferey returned a few minutes later, landing on a nearby trash can.

"I found a safer route. Follow me."

The trio followed Ferey through a series of back alleys and overgrown gardens, moving with the stealth of shadows. The city seemed to shift around them, revealing new paths and hiding spots.

Leo felt a sense of excitement building within him. Despite the danger, he was starting to enjoy this new life, the thrill of the chase, and the challenge of outsmarting their enemies.

As the sun rose higher in the sky, they reached a small park. The grass was green and lush, a stark contrast to the concrete jungle they had been navigating.

Velva sniffed the air again

"It's safe here for now. We should rest and gather our strength."

Leo collapsed onto the grass, feeling the warmth of the sun on his fur. The park was quiet, save for the chirping of birds and the rustling of leaves in the breeze.

Ferey perched on a nearby tree branch

"We should plan our next move. We can't just wander aimlessly."

Leo sat up, his mind racing with possibilities. He looked at Velva and Ferey, his newfound friends and allies.

"You're right. We need a plan. But first, let's enjoy this moment of peace."

Velva lay down beside him, her tail wagging contentedly. Ferey ruffled his feathers, looking down at them with a mix of pride and affection.

Leo closed his eyes, feeling a sense of belonging that he hadn't felt since he was taken from his home. For the first time since his life as a pampered cat, he felt truly alive.

As they rested, the sun began to set, casting a warm golden glow over the park. The shadows grew longer, and the air cooled slightly.

Leo opened his eyes, watching as the sky turned from blue to pink to purple. He realized that he had never seen a sunset from this angle before.

Velva nudged him gently

"We should head back soon. It's getting dark."

Leo stood up, stretching his legs. He felt a pang of reluctance to leave this peaceful spot, but he knew Velva was right.

"Let's go. We'll find a safe place to spend the night."

Ferey took to the air once more, scouting ahead for potential hiding spots.

The trio made their way through the park and back into the city. The streets were now alive with a different kind of energy, as streetlights flickered on and the sounds of nocturnal creatures filled the air.

Ferey led them to an old, abandoned building. The windows were boarded up, and the door was rusted shut.

"This should do for tonight. No one will bother us here."

Leo followed Velva and Ferey inside, finding a relatively dry corner to settle down in. The building was dark and smelled of dust, but it was better than sleeping outside in the cold.

Velva curled up next to him, her warmth comforting in the chill of the night.

Ferey perched on a nearby beam, keeping watch as the three of them drifted off to sleep, ready to face whatever challenges tomorrow would bring.

As the night wore on, Leo dreamt of his old home, the soft bed, and the gentle hands that used to stroke his fur. He missed the comforts of indoor life, but he also knew that he couldn't go back.

In his dream, he saw his human family one last time, smiling and waving goodbye as he walked away into the unknown. The image faded, leaving him with a bittersweet feeling of loss and acceptance.

Leo's eyes snapped open as he heard a commotion outside. The sound of footsteps and harsh voices filled the air, growing closer with each passing second.

Velva and Ferey were instantly alert, their senses on high alert.

"It's them," Ferey whispered urgently. "The animal catchers."

Leo's heart raced as he realized the danger they were in. The rusty door began to rattle, as if someone was trying to force it open.

Velva growled low in her throat, her body tensed for action.

"We need to get out of here, now!"
