Side Chapter: The Shut-in's Observation Notes

The following are excerpts from a certain tenant's diary.

-Day 17 of Sephius

I saw the new tenant.

She was an outsider so I was worried that she was here for me, but it looks like I'm in the clear. Seeing how nervous she was in the tavern, I wondered how she managed to travel by herself, but she's actually a little scary. She almost kicked one guy's head off. I don't even want to imagine what she might do if she realises I was watching her like this. I definitely can't let her catch me.

Darn! How come all the tenants manage to notice me? Is that one of the conditions to get a room? Am I being bullied? Will she come after me?

-Day 18 of Sephius

I was so worried that the new tenant was gonna attack me that I could barely sleep. I think I'm safe, but I still can't be sure.

Ew, that weird old lady is here. I hope she doesn't bother me again.

Nice! Looks like she's after the new tenant this time, so I'm free.

Wait, why is she coming towards-

Damn it! She tricked me! Why do I have to be the one to watch the newbie?! I wish someone would tell her to do it herself. At least the landlady sent the newbie out so I can take my morning nap. The landlady looks scary, but she's really nice. I wish she would take better care of herself though. She keeps leaving in the middle of the night and it doesn't look like she's getting any sleep. I wonder if it has something to do with the new taxes?

Huh? Did I miss something? Why does she suddenly look so comfortable in the tavern? She was so creeped out and nervous just yesterday. And she just got a job so she should be depressed, right?

I really don't understand girls.

-Day 19 of Sephius

The newbie went to work in the morning and came back at night. Nothing special happened.

-Day 20 of Sephius

The newbie went to work in the morning and came back at night again. I wouldn't mind if she kept up with this boring schedule, but I hope that old lady doesn't think I'm slacking.

-Day 21 of Sephius

It's been only a few days yet the newbie already brought a friend to the inn. I don't know how people can be so stupid and careless. Getting close to someone you barely know will only get you betrayed in the end.

Darn it! She caught me again! I knew I shouldn't have opened the door! But I can't see her unless I do that. Aw man, I knew I shouldn't have listened to that old lady. You know what? Forget it! I won't open the door to look at her again!

The old lady will be satisfied if I just tell her what she does downstairs, right?

-Day 22 of Sephius

The newbie stayed at the inn and did some household chores. I had some cleaning to do too, so I couldn't watch her as much. Nothing special happened.

-Day 23 of Sephius

It was so noisy outside that I woke up early. There was another tax hike. I hope the inn will be alright, I really don't wanna have to move. I don't have to worry about money, but the baron really needs to get this under control.

The landlady collapsed! I didn't see when it happened, but I saw her lying on the ground when the newbie came back from work. I knew she probably wasn't getting enough sleep, but I didn't think this would happen. If only I had told someone, then they could've stopped her before it came to this. If she doesn't wake up, then I-

Luckily, it seems like she'll be okay. I don't know how much the newbie knows about medicine, but she definitely did something to help the landlady before the doctor came. This should stop the landlady from being so reckless. I hope something like this doesn't happen again.

-Day 24 of Sephius

It looks like the landlady isn't working today. It'll probably be hard for her daughter to serve tables by herself, but it's still better than putting a sick person at risk.

Even at a time like this, the newbie went to work early. Despite looking so grateful when the landlady gave her a job, she still puts herself first. She's so 

Oh who am I kidding? As if I have the right to complain about her.

Wow! I just took a short nap and when I woke up, the tavern was super packed. Like I don't think I've ever seen this place so full during the day. It looks like the landlady's daughter changed some stuff, but did she know it would have such an impact? Well, I doubt it, considering the number of them working. There's no way they'll be able to keep up with a crowd like this. It's just a matter of time before they reach their limits.

She came back.

That newbie has barely been here a week, but she left work to come help at the inn. I'm sure no one would blame her if she stayed out of it, but still she came back.

She must be a major idiot.

With the newbie helping, they made it through the morning crowd and then prepared for the dinner rush. After seeing them deal with the massive horde in the morning, I didn't think they would slip up at this stage, and I was right. Despite there being a bigger and rowdier crowd, they still pulled through.

There was a bit of trouble with a drunk customer, but no one got hurt, except the drunk guy at least. That drunk, he looks a little strange. Maybe I should watch him.

Unfortunately, I lost sight of him inside the slums, but I'm certain there's something wrong with him. No matter how drunk he is, it makes no sense for him to be so persistent. A normal drunk would have dozed off after falling for the third or so time, but he kept going.

I should tell the old lady about this.
