Chapter 4:
The Selfish Player
He nonchalantly opened the messages he had read before, and read them again. Some information had been installed in his memory was not re-sent.
The first message sent by the Goddess:[Several identical looking swords will be distributed at the beginning of the tutorial.
The 41st sword from the left is the only true Unbreakable Sword.
It cannot be taken outside the tutorial area; the selective force field which makes the wall for the tutorial area detects the surface of the passing object and thus decides objects that can pass through and that can't.]
He heard a sharp scream nearby and ran towards sound, forgetting his messages window still open.
The second message:
[At midnight, you will reach your positing by following the yellow arrow.
Upon killing a monster, any one chosen stats of the player will go up by one.He reached the site of the scream and felt his insides turn at the despicable spectacle.
A hideous beast with backwards bent knees, long arms and three mouths in place of eyes, slashing into another monster resembling a large squid with flailing tentacles, screaming in a dreadfully cursed language.
He saw the sight and stood still in shock. He gathered his courage and gripped the hilt of his sword. As long as he had it, these monsters wouldn't stand a chance.
He charged at the hideous beast first as it had both his long hands penetrating the squid. A swift swing of the Unbreakable Sword and both his long arms were off. It screamed incredibly loud and shrill.
"Scream more, draw all the monsters here." He spoke coldly and cut off it's legs, leaving it to bleed and scream for a while.
He placed his sword on his neck, but hesitated. He felt a certain tightness in his heart. Yet, he ignored it and moved again to cut off it's neck.
[You have slain a monster!]
[The Blessing, Lucky Duckling is in effect!][You have been awarded 5 million coins.][Tutorial Pass ticket has been acquired!]
He then walked towards the squid. It wasn't moving, and seemed to have accepted it's fate. He placed the sword over him.
His eyes landed somewhere and his eyes widened. His hands ceased obeying his command.
□On it's head, he saw a familiar red ribbon.□
The final message of the Goddess:
[There are no monsters in the tutorial.
Each player's senses are manipulated by the system and they perceive all other players as monsters]
He stared at the squid, trying to calm himself. He closed his eyes and focused. He had promised to live for himself. He won't care about others. He opened his eyes again. But they quivered.
His hands shaking, he hesitantly grabbed and held the sword over her again. But he couldn't do it.
The vision ahead of him disappeared as he entered his own head. And he saw another himself in from of him."Spare her." The other him demanded calmly and unsheathed his sword. It was the same as his.
"No." He replied. They sprang at each other and their swords clashed. They sparred on an equal footing.
"Why do you even want to do this?"The other him questioned. He didn't seem angry or provoked, but rather, disappointed.
An intense rage started burning through him. He retaliated the sword strikes with increasingly violent swings.
"Why?"He swung furiously as the darkness gave him power and pushed back the other him.
"Because, I live for myself."He declared, and long iron chains appeared, binding the other's hands and legs.
The other looked down in defeat."... you will regret this."
The vision of the squid in front of him, cowering, shedding tears and shivering with pain and fear.
He closed his eyes once more and opened them again. His resolution was absolute.
"... maybe I will."
He slashed the sword down powerfully and in one strike
□He killed Ichiko.□
[You have slain a monster!][The Blessing, Lucky Duckling is in effect!][You have been awarded 15 million coins.]
.
.
.
7 days passed since he killed Ichiko. Several monsters/players had been drawn by the screams. And the screams continued for 7 days and nights, with barely a pause.
He had endlessly slaughtered the other players. A great mass of corpses lay beneath him.
But that wasn't enough for him. There were those who ran away from the screams. So he had scoured the whole forest, killing even the few remaining ones.
The same crowd which had been smiling and chatting without a care in the world just a week ago now lay as an unrecognizable, scattered mess of disjointed arms, legs, torso and heads.
Who could tell which or how much of them was the Liam Turner, the Justin Reece, the Ayush Jaiswal..... or the Ichiko Himejima.
And in the middle of the disaster was a single man. His sword's blade, hilt and even his whole arms and clothes had been dyed in blood red.
He was making his way towards the exit, in tow were two monsters whom he had subdued without killing, dragged onwards by him with two ropes tied to them.
[The Gods watching you are curious why you have spared the two monsters.]
"So?" He retorted. "Why should I tell you?"
[The Gods watching are curious why you have spared the two monsters.]
He was getting annoyed. "Get lost, you old geezers."[Your Goddess is politely asking why you have spared the two monsters.]
He hesitated. The Goddess had helped him and will continue to give him information of the future. He shouldn't provoke her."...I haven't spared them, I'm going to try something."
[The Gods watching you are curious to see what you will do next.]He ignored the messages and walked on. Soon he reached the Exit of the tutorial.
[You have reached the exit of the tutorial!][You possess the Tutorial Pass ticket!][You can safely pass through!]
He stood before the transparent wall containing all of the tutorial area. But instead of passing through, he poked the sword at the wall.
For the sword, it seemed as if the wall was completely solid.
[Error! You cannot take the Unbreakable Sword outside the tutorial area!]
His thoughts organised themselves. He had expected this. He looked at the two monsters behind him and walked towards them.
'According to the Goddess's infused memory, the wall is a sort of force field.'
He placed the sword in the hands of one of the monsters. And then guided it's hand to kill the other monster.
'It detects the surface of what is touching it and determines whether that thing should pass through or not.'
He took the sword back from the last monster/player and then lifted the monster and the sword close to the wall.'In that case, what if the sword passes through without it's surface touching the wall?'
He thrust the sword inside the monster's mouth and penetrated it from the inside, and adjusted even the hilt completely inside it's body. Then, in a split second, before it could die, he threw it across the wall. The plan worked and it landed on the other side, with the sword inside it.
He then proceeded to walk out behind it.[You have completed the tutorial!]
[300 coins have been awarded!]
[You have earned a new title: 'Architect of Genocide'!]
[You have unlocked the achievement: 'Liberator of the Unbreakable Sword'!]
[Several gods are astonished by your ruthlessness!][Gods who love violence are delighted by your actions!]
[You have earned the animosity of the gods aligned with the good disposition!]
He sighed in annoyance, trying to ignore them.
[Your Goddess is congratulating you!][Your Goddess is cheering for you!]
He looked up. This Goddess was quite favorable to him. He wondered why.
The inflow of messages suddenly ceased as another message popped up.[The Final Goddess is looking at you.]
He stared at this message.
'The Final Goddess?'He had no information of a being like that. He decided to ask his Goddess later. He then took a few steps towards the body of the monster to collect his sword. Since the tutorial had ended, the system stopped displaying the player as a monster.
And when his eyes found that face, he froze.□He fell to his knees when he saw the face of that person.□
