Chapter 19

The glowing screen of Astera’s phone is the only light in his darkened room. He lies on his back, still in his Floral Ignis Guard jacket, thumb hovering over the screen.

Astera (text):
I still can’t believe today’s Calc test had a whole bonus section on

integrals. I blacked out halfway through 😭

Nalea (text):
LOL I was stuck on question 14 for 30 minutes. I was like, “This isn’t math. This is cruelty.”
Anyway, you’ll pass. You’re the smartest guy I know. 🌸

Astera (text):
Flattery will get you everywhere 😌
But thanks. I needed that. You doing anything tomorrow after school?

Nalea (text):
Mmmm not really. Just choir practice. Why?

Astera (text):
No reason. Just thought you might still wanna hang out tomorrow. Walk the garden trail maybe?

A pause. He stares at the screen, nervous.

Nalea (text):
...Sure :), That actually sounds nice.

Astera (text):
Cool. Then it’s a plan.

A silence stretches between them for a moment, until she texts again.

Nalea (text):
It’s 12:22. We should sleep. You’ve got captain duties and a nosey cousin who’ll probably drag you into some wild mission.

Astera (text):
Yeah… you’re right. 3 more minutes tho.

Nalea (text):
Deal.
Hey… I’m glad we talk like this.
