Chapter 7:
Avalon
His room, unlike the master bedroom, was smaller in size but still felt cosy; there were two beds separated by a digital nightstand on the right corner of the room, right next to the window. They had the same blue bedsheet tucked in, two pillows at the top and a brown throw blanket. However, on the bed next to the window, three hard-bound books lay open, one on top of the other, their pages ruffling as little eddies from the Air Conditioner occasionally came their way. Unlike the other bed, the blanket was spread open, most touching the white tiled floor below.
Di, all I ask of you is to keep the room clean! Ugh, why can't you even do that?Opposite the beds was a wooden shelf—standard military issue—with a cabinet below and three open racks above. Sidharth's eyes drifted toward the topmost rack, once again filled with books. But not his. These were on neuroscience, cybernetics, and more scientific jargon that he didn't understand.
What caught his attention, however, was the blue-red plastic model nestled at the centre—a robotic figure which resembled a samurai helmet, its body was mechanical as it held a red shield on its right arm with a green sword on its left, frozen in action pose. The designation 'RX-78-2' was printed across its white mechanical legs. The character came from a video game that the both adored—an experience as dazzling as it was devastating, its bittwesweet story still lingering in their hearts.
Sidharth slung his backpack onto the side of his bed, opened the chain, and pulled out the datapad, stylus, water bottle, and a few textbooks. He stacked them neatly on the second rack beside his school chip cards and backup stylus. Then, moving towards the door, he pushed it close and hung his backpack behind the hook before opening it again, taking a glance outside. From here, he could see his father holding three plates at a time, clearly trying to show off his self-proclaimed 'housekeeping skills'. Aisha's laughter followed, loud and unfiltered—until their mother entered the room, abruptly ending the father-daughter comedy routine. He turned back and walked past the shelf towards the study table—a compact brown wooden desk, also military standard, no larger than those in schools. It held three monitors: one mounted on the wall and two side by side on the tabletop. Beneath it, the CPU hummed softly, its cooling fans releasing waves of warm air into the room.On the left corner of the table sat a small wooden photo frame, no bigger than a pocket diary. Inside was a picture of Aisha—wearing a white lab coat and red-windsor glasses. Her signature long, tousled, curly raven hair had been cut short, brushing just past her shoulders. She smiled at the camera, proudly raising her left hand—still fully human then, not yet replaced by the bionic one.
On her ring finger sat a black ring, which she thrusted forward. Her lips were curled upwards showing off the most dazzling smile. Beside her was a blonde man, his electric blue eyes were filled with exhaustion as his oversized labcoat threatened to fall any moment. He was barely awake, as Aisha held him by his collar, keeping him from falling. On the background were multiple cylinders and test tubes, denoting the picture was taken inside a laboratory. On the bottom of the wooden frame, the words 'Ich Liebe Dich' were carved along with the date '07:12:2037'Sidharth's fingers gripped his datapad tightly as he quickly averted his gaze from the frame. There were just too many tragic memories connected with it, which he wished to forget.
Taking a deep breath, he moved towards the right side of the table towards the rectangular charging stand. It was painted in white with the words 'ODYSSEUS' printed over it in black. A tiny spherical LED bulb glowing yellow on its side indicated it was on standby.Sidharth picked up his datapad and gently placed it on the charging port, waiting for the light to change green before leaving to freshen up."Sid, only five minutes left!" Leela warned, her voice strained as she was reigning in the other two.
I know, Ma. I know
Sidharth sighed before grabbing his towel and walking into the shower.*****
