Chapter 8:

Rivalry? In the first day only?

The Cursed Manuscript

—For a little while the introductions continued. Students stood up one by one, stating their likes and dislikes. Tadano nodded at some, feeling it relatable. "Parental pressure, huh?" Tadano hummed, faking a groan.
The boy at the right row, standing behind the second last bench, shut his mouth. "That's why I came here, to sum it up." Kawaguchi nodded sideways after speaking. Many students sitting in front felt similar, they turned back, concentrating on his words— sometimes also reflecting their own experiences with his.
"Fortunately we've variety here." Tadano raised his palm for a gesture, "So you can choose any subject. They'll get the same importance just like any other subject."
As soon as he finished, many hands rose up. "Can I anatomy here?" One of them spoke up.
Midway through his desk, Tadano turned. "Yes, why—"
Suddenly he stopped. RIIING. The school bell screamed, echoing in the whole floor.
"It's time for your lab." Tadano murmured, eyes at the door. His left hand already prepared for leave.
Back in the row, the girl stood unanswered. "Call him." A ponytailed girl nudged the girl's waist.
"Uh..." But she couldn't respond to it.
"Remember to check your mails today." Tadano tucked his files, already stepping towards the door. CLICK. It unlocked, creating a gap. The echoing of murmurs suddenly stopped.
The students stood up in chorus, "Thank-you sir!"
"Softly!" Tadano frowned, jerking back. "Thank you sir..."
"Hm. And the mail's gonna come at 5PM. Be alert." Tadano raised a brow, casually leaning against the frame. "Bye."
The door was left ajar, echoes of his footsteps fading within seconds. As soon as it did, the air inside the room, warmed up.
"Return it! You said you'd!" The yell hit Keta's ears like a solid object.
Softly. He turned towards the left row.
Meanwhile, in the same row, at the last Miori started turned around, giving a wide smile as she re-introduced herself.
"Aren't you Okari-san?" She gleamed. "Was yesterday too scary for you?"
"N-No.." The girl moved her face away. "Are you sure?" Miori leaned in. The girl averted her eyes, "I don't know.." She awaited Miori's response for a second, then she turned slowly.
"Ah!" She turned instinctively, covering her eyes with her slender fingers.
"What?" Miori looked at her side, then back to her.
"I didn't mean to scare her." Said a brown haired girl, after she'd pulled off the curtain."It's fine." Miori brushed her off. Then she tapped the girl's head, softly."There, there."
The brown haired girl frowned, the grip of her fingers loosening. She left the curtain as it is, and stepped away.
From a distance Keta observed the situation. His screen was turned off, since he'd finished exploring.
"Keta-kun." A hand tapped his shoulder. It was unfamiliar.
"Orahashi?" The hand was his. But it was the left one.
"I was asking if you could accompany me to office, I'm new." Orahashi's brows drooped, along with impatient tap of his foot.
"So am I." Absolutely ignoring his tapping, Keta rejected him flatly."In that case, why don't we ask the teacher? I know— Tadano."
Just then the background noises faded in Keta's ear. "That's within your capacity, I believe." He replied.
Then Orahashi, who'd been keeping his calm for a quite a bit of time, snapped."Weren't we friends?" His smiled tilted.
"You could say that." Keta looked away, pressing the button on his desk. The screen lit up.
"Then based on that—"
"Sure. Let's go." Keta cut him off, mid-word. He pressed the button again, the screen went pitch black from dark blue.
He's upto something. Keta exhaled, slowly rising to his feet. "Which way?"
Orahashi looked at him in confusion. His eyes glanced diagonally between the exit and Keta.
"I mean, which way we'd take to the office?"
"Oh, its north." A grin spread across Orahashi's face.
Navigating their way through the crowd, they walked to the exit."Is this about the form?" Keta asked, while pushing someone's hand out of the way.
"Uh, yeah." Orahashi blinked, surprised. Both of them were about to step out, Orahashi leaned out first, to make sure he was right about the way.
"Orahashi-san!" Keta turned around. Asuka-san. Asuka's voice played out in his mind, as if playing on a recorder.
"Ozamu?" Keta flicked towards the frozen figure.
"...tch." Orahashi turned back a serious expression."What?"
"Who's that?" Ignoring the sudden narrowing of his eyes, Miori leaned to Keta.
"Keta." Orahashi replied for him. "Let's go. We've until the lab class starts."
"O-Okay." Keta was dragged along, outside. The unusual playful face that Miori displayed was imprinted on his mind after Orahashi shot her a look.
"Okay, see you later." Miori wriggled her fingers in air, backing away.
None of the students at the door got a ear of this, they were too busy in their own matters just like Orahashi was.
"Hey, that's not North." Knowing that Orahashi wouldn't listen, Keta still called. He didn't try to wriggle his hand out neither did he show uneasiness.
Orahashi continued to pull him through the quiet air, his grip never faltering.
"Are you kidnapping me?"
Orahashi's grip faltered in a second.
