Chapter 7:
the nightmare merger
Alex opened their eyes in the Collective's public space, which was slowly returning to its normal serene appearance. The nightmare amalgamations were fading, each component returning to its original dreamer. The web of shared terror was gone.
But something had changed. Alex could feel new connections forming—not bonds of shared fear, but bridges of understanding. The dreamers whose nightmares had been connected were now linked by empathy, by the recognition that their deepest fears were not unique but universal.
"Status report," Maya's voice came through the neural link, tight with concern.
"Web is dissolved," Alex replied, but their voice was different now—quieter, more vulnerable. "Source has been integrated."
"And reality? The barrier?"
Alex checked the dimensional stability readings. The barrier between dreams and waking consciousness was holding strong again, reinforced by the restoration of balance in the Collective.
"Reality is safe," Alex confirmed. "The nightmares are going home."
They began the slow process of surfacing from the Collective, but before they fully disconnected, they turned back to look at the space where the nightmare web had been. In its place, they could see something new growing—a network of connection based not on shared fear, but on shared understanding.
The human psyche, it turned out, was more resilient than anyone had imagined.
