Chapter 56:
Veil of the Shadow Hunter
Leegna awoke with a deep ache in his body, the toll of his last battle still pressing on his limbs. His mind was cloudy, and the weight of the rapier in his hand felt unfamiliar, almost alien. Yet, he couldn't shake the feeling of something else lingering—something more profound than mere exhaustion.
From the shadows of his dimly lit room, Yuj's voice cut through the silence, smooth and deliberate. "You survived," Yuj remarked, his tone neither impressed nor disappointed. "But you're far from ready."
Leegna sat up slowly, his body groaning in protest. "Who were they?" he asked, his voice hoarse. "The ones with Aternos. They were different, stronger... I couldn't harm them."
Yuj stepped closer, his form almost melting into the shadows, as though the darkness itself obeyed him. "They are from a realm beyond the Time Guardians," Yuj said, his words thick with hidden meaning. "Stronger, older beings. You're starting to touch a world far beyond what you know."
Leegna's gaze hardened. "And what about you? Where do you fit in all of this?"
Yuj's lips curled into a faint smile, a knowing look in his eyes. "I'm merely a guide. But as I've told you before, there are things I desire too, Leegna. The Time Guardians are only the beginning. The true challenge lies beyond them, in the realms where even shadows fear to tread."
Leegna narrowed his eyes. "And how do I stop them? The rapier... I could barely control it. I need to be stronger."
Yuj let out a low chuckle, stepping even closer until his presence was almost suffocating. "Power comes at a price, dearest Leegna. You've already paid some of it with your soul. But there are... ways to strengthen yourself."
Leegna felt a chill creep up his spine. "Ways?"
Yuj's voice dropped, almost whispering as though sharing a dangerous secret. "Your body is only one vessel. Your soul can be shaped, molded. You saw it yourself when I helped you last night. That presence you felt—it wasn't just me. Souls can be taken, controlled, used as weapons if you know how. And I..."
Yuj trailed off, his eyes gleaming with a dark promise. "I have the means to help you harness this power, to build something... greater."
Leegna frowned, still weary from the events of the previous night. Yuj's words echoed in his head, unsettling but not surprising. He had always known Yuj was far more than he appeared—a being with motives and powers far beyond the ordinary. But hearing that souls could be controlled, manipulated like puppets, stirred something deep within him. A fear? Or perhaps... intrigue?
"And what would this price be?" Leegna asked cautiously, his fingers brushing against the handle of the rapier resting by his side. The dark blade, shimmering with a shadow-like hue, felt cold yet familiar. It was as though the weapon had a pulse of its own, quiet and waiting.
Yuj stepped closer, his eyes narrowing as he examined the weapon in Leegna's hand. "The price has always been the same, Leegna. Your strength is tied to your soul, and the more power you wield, the more it pulls from you. But this rapier... it's different."
Leegna's grip tightened around the weapon, its dark surface reflecting the dim light of the room. "Different how?"
"The Lost Rapier of Dark Matter," Yuj said, his voice almost reverent. "It's not like the ring or the powers you've used before. This weapon doesn't take a direct toll on your body. But it's tied to something else—shadow. The more you push its limits, the more unstable it becomes. If you abuse it, it will turn on you, reverting to an embracing shadow, becoming dormant until it regains its strength."
Leegna tilted the blade slightly, watching as the darkness around it seemed to ripple like liquid, as though it were not entirely solid. "So, it can pierce through both physical and material forms? I felt that when I fought those creatures. They were untouchable at first, but when I managed to strike... it was as though this rapier was made to cut through things beyond the tangible."
Yuj nodded slowly, his gaze never leaving the weapon. "It's a tool of destruction, both for the material world and beyond. But it's also a double-edged sword, literally and figuratively. Push it too far, and it will betray you, turning into nothing but shadow until it decides you are ready to wield it again."
Leegna absorbed the words, feeling the weight of the weapon in his hand. The rapier felt alive, yet precarious—a powerful ally that could become useless if misused. He had to be careful.
Leegna stood, testing his limbs as he felt the residual ache from his last battle. His mind was clouded with questions, but one thought pushed to the forefront. "Yuj," he began, "the creatures that attacked me with Aternos... who are they? You said they were from beyond the Time Guardians' realm. What's out there?"
Yuj's smile faded slightly, a rare moment of seriousness crossing his features. "The Time Guardians, as powerful as they are, are only the gatekeepers. Beyond their realm lies another, a place where beings of far greater power reside. You've already encountered the emissaries—those shadow-coated creatures. They were sent to investigate you... and to determine whether you're a threat."
Leegna felt a chill as Yuj continued.
"These beings answer to forces much higher than the Time Guardians. But their motives, for now, remain unclear. What I can tell you is that they will not stop. Not until they understand what you are capable of... or until they deem you no longer a threat."
Leegna looked down at the rapier, the shadows swirling gently around its surface. His grip tightened. "So what now? How do I get stronger? How do I control this?" He gestured to the rapier and his own worn body.
Yuj's eyes gleamed again, this time with a deeper intensity. "You need to strengthen not just your body but your soul. Only then can you truly control the power that lies within you. There are... methods," Yuj said with a sly grin. "I can guide you, but the choice is yours."
Leegna's breath caught in his throat as the figure stepped forward, cloaked in shadow and darkness. The eyeless face, though featureless, was disturbingly familiar, evoking memories from a time he could barely recall. His grip tightened on the rapier, but the weapon seemed to sense his hesitation, flickering in and out of solidity, as though wavering with his uncertainty.
And then, as if on cue, the voice spoke again, softer this time but with an edge of menace.
"There he is... my one and only shadow hunter."
The words wrapped around him like a vice, a cold sweat forming on Leegna's brow. He couldn't place it. Was it Yuj, somehow disguised? Or something else, something deeper? His mind raced, desperate to unravel the truth, but exhaustion weighed down every thought.
Before he could react further, the figure raised an arm, and Leegna saw a faint shimmer—a ripple in the fabric of space itself. Just for a moment, it was as if the air around them quivered with anticipation. And then, for the briefest second, Leegna saw beyond.
A vision—a world unlike anything he had ever seen. An army of shadowy figures marched through a desolate landscape, their eyes burning with unnatural light. They weren't creatures of the Time Guardians' realm. They were something else, something much worse.
"Prepare yourself," the voice whispered, sending chills down his spine. "This... is only the beginning."
And as quickly as it had come, the vision vanished, leaving Leegna alone with the eyeless figure, the rapier still flickering in his hand. He could feel it—the weight of something much larger than himself, looming just beyond the horizon. The next invasion wasn't far off.
Leegna's body tensed, his senses heightened as he prepared to strike, but his strength was already fading. The figure's presence felt like a haunting echo, familiar yet impossible to pin down.
The shadows shifted once more, and as the figure began to recede, a final, chilling whisper echoed through the room:
"They're coming... for you."
Leegna's eye flickered with a burst of blue, but before he could react, the figure vanished into the shadows, leaving him alone once again. His heart pounded as the weight of what was to come settled over him, suffocating and undeniable.
The invasion was inevitable. But would he be ready?
