Chapter 11:

Keep The Promise

Life Beat

“Sorry, but what are you doing in my house?”

It was early in the morning when Mika suddenly showed up. Before I could say anything, she just barged in.

“Do you have any food? I haven’t had breakfast yet,” she said like it was the most natural thing in the world.

Did she think this was her house?

“Before that, what are you doing here? I know we don’t have class today, but can’t you let me relax?”

“Come on! You should feel honored that one of this year’s top models is visiting your house!” she said, flashing me a bright smile.

Why is this happening to me?

“Anyway,” she continued, “how’s your songwriting going? Any progress since that night?”

“Still working on it. I want it to sound smooth… sincere. I just need the right inspiration.”

“Want help? I’ll do anything you need!” she offered with a mischievous grin.

So that’s her real reason for coming here.

“Maybe you can help me write the lyrics,” I said.

“You can leave that to me!”

After that, I made breakfast for both of us.

While we were eating, she suddenly asked:

“Do you have a girlfriend?”

I nearly choked on my food.

“No. Why would you suddenly ask that?”

“No reason… How about someone you like? Maybe you could write the song about her?”

That made me pause.
Yuka’s image floated into my mind.

“Would that be okay?” I asked hesitantly. “Writing a song about her… and singing it in front of so many people?”

“Of course it’s okay!” Mika said, full of energy. “You should tell the world how amazing she is! And who knows? Maybe she’ll hear it—and understand how you feel. That could be the start of something.”

“I’m not sure if it’ll be the start of a relationship… but maybe it’s time I finally kept my promise.”

After we finished eating, I picked up my guitar and began composing.

I wanted something that felt romantic, but also honest—sincere enough to resonate with anyone listening.

Mika was sprawled across my sofa, casually watching TV while I worked.

How can she be so relaxed?

A few hours passed. I had three demo songs done.

“Hey, Mika. I finished three melodies. Want to listen and tell me which one’s best?”

She sat up immediately.

“Let’s hear them!”

I played all three.

“The third one!” she said without hesitation. “That melody—it’s perfect for a romantic song. If you pair it with the right lyrics, it’s going to be incredible. I really think we can win with that one!”

“You said you’d help me with lyrics, right?”

“Yup! Now… tell me what you want to say to her.”

“What I want to say…?”

“Just be honest.”

I looked down at my guitar.
The words came slowly—honest, raw, from somewhere deep.

“I want to tell her… thank you. For being in my life. Her smile—it’s enough to make my whole day. The memories I made with her… they’ll always stay in my heart.”

I didn’t even realize my eyes were getting blurry.
A tear slipped down my cheek.

“Ken… are you okay?” Mika asked gently.

“Why am I crying?” I muttered, wiping my eyes. “I haven’t thought about her like this in so long…”

“It’s okay. You’re allowed to feel. She must’ve meant a lot to you,” Mika said softly. “She’s lucky, you know. To have someone like you care this much. Honestly… I feel a little jealous.”

“Without her, I don’t think I’d be who I am today.”

Mika stood up suddenly.

“I think I can write the lyrics based on what you just said. Give me thirty minutes, okay? Then you can tell me what you think.”

She made her way to my room.

“Wait, that’s my—”

Thump.

She slammed the door shut—and locked it.

I guess she just wanted a quiet place to write.

Thirty minutes later, she returned and handed me a sheet of paper.

“Here. Finished! What do you think?”

I read the lyrics slowly.
No fancy words. Nothing poetic or showy.
But every line felt true. I understood everything.
It was simple—but powerful.

“I tried to keep it honest and close to what you told me. I think the best songs are the ones that connect with people. That’s why I avoided complicated words. If it’s easy to understand, it’s easier to feel,” Mika explained.

“Thank you, Mika. Really. I’ll do my best to match this with my song.”

“No problem!” she said, grinning. “We’ve got this.”
