Chapter 6:

The spread of sweetness

Rebirth of Science: Empire of Hope

At dawn, Aurora headed to the city market. Today was going to be special; people were introducing a new treat for the first time — chocolate made from cocoa and a beverage made from roasted coffee beans. The market was bustling. “Wonderful products!”, “Cheap fruits here!”, “Quality fabrics, hurry up!” — it was full of shouts. Aurora felt nervous. Even though the chocolate was tasty, she worried whether people would accept it. She arrived at her small stall and placed the chocolates she had prepared yesterday on the table.
The smell of brewed coffee spread through the air. But the neighboring sellers laughed. “Hey, Aurora, did you set it on fire? What’s this black stuff you brought?” laughed the bread seller. “It’s not meat, this is a new treat,” Aurora replied calmly. “I won’t buy it now.” “You call it a sweet?” But Aurora didn’t mind. Her stall remained empty, while people around bought bread. Suddenly, a child ran over. “Sister, what is this?” he asked curiously. “This is a sweet. It’s called chocolate. Do you want to try it?” “Of course!” Aurora gave him a small piece. The child bit it and his eyes widened. “This is amazing!” he shouted as he ran to his mother. “Mom, can you buy this for me?” Curious, the woman approached. “Hello, it seems my child likes it. How much does it cost?” Aurora thought for a moment: “Two copper coins each,” she said. “Give me ten,” said the woman. The mother was amazed after tasting the sweet. “This is incredible! I have never tasted anything like this. Do you make it yourself?” “Yes…” said Aurora briefly. “Then give me ten more, are you ready for tomorrow?” Aurora, hardly believing it herself, silently nodded. The woman’s excited voice drew the attention of others. Some tasted it, others lined up. At that moment, the neighboring bread seller looked on with jealousy. A cunning thought crossed her mind… The bread seller burned with envy. “What did that girl put in her product? People take one bite and keep coming back. This isn’t normal… maybe this is a special product?” she thought. Angry, she left her stall and approached the armored knights patrolling the market. “Gentlemen!” whispered the seller. “The young girl standing there is selling something suspicious. People can’t stop buying it like crazy. This might be serious!” The knights glanced at each other, then headed toward Aurora’s stall. The crowd parted to make way. Aurora’s heart pounded. “Young lady,” said the stern-faced knight. “A complaint has been filed against you. Your product may contain prohibited items. We need to inspect it.”
People whispered around. The neighboring seller sneered. “I didn’t add anything illegal!” Aurora said, trembling. “Here, see for yourselves.” She presented the small chocolate she had made. “No, try it yourself.” There was a moment of silence, then suddenly their eyes lit up. “My God… this is amazing!” they shouted like children.
The others glanced at one another, then hurriedly shared another piece to taste. Their stern faces instantly filled with childlike joy. “This… this isn’t…” they said. “It’s just a sweet, but unlike anything we’ve had before!” The bread seller’s laughter faded. At that moment, the knights noticed the dark bubbling brew. “And what’s in that cauldron?” they asked. “This is coffee,” Aurora said confidently. “It relieves fatigue and refreshes you.” “Pour me a cup!” said one. “For me too!” said another. Aurora smiled and handed out two cups. The knights sipped the hot coffee, astonished, looking at each other. “It’s like magic!” said one, feeling invigorated. “Even if I guard the market all day, I wouldn’t get tired!” The gathered crowd laughed. “There are no illegal elements in these foods!” declared the head knight. “On the contrary, they are wonderful marvels! People, buy without fear!” The crowd clapped. The line grew longer. The neighboring bread seller’s face turned red, and she slammed her basket on the ground. Bread scattered everywhere. Children happily grabbed the free bread and ran inside. The seller was left helpless. Meanwhile, Aurora’s line at the stall doubled, and the chocolate and coffee sold out in no time. The chocolate and coffee sold out in no time. The chocolate and coffee sold out in no time.
That day, Aurora stayed at the market until late. By morning, all the chocolate and coffee had sold, leaving nothing to sell. Moreover, there were many orders for the next day. Joy filled her face as she hurried to tell Moris the good news. When she reached home, she saw a cauldron bubbling in the yard. Moris was sitting by the fire, brewing cocoa, deep in thought as if calculating something. Aurora ran up and hugged him. “Thank you!” she said breathlessly. “All the chocolate and coffee sold at once today!” Moris laughed. “I knew it would happen. People have tasted something they’ve never known before. Now I wonder how they will react to other sweets… But there’s still much work to do,” he said calmly. Aurora could not hide her laughter and shook her head. “By the way, something interesting happened at the market today,” she continued. “The guards may have come to inspect my products…” “And they left it just as it was, and it sold well?” Moris said with a faint smile. Aurora’s eyes widened. “Yes! How did you know?!” “Because no one can resist it,” said Moris confidently. “It’s a gift from nature itself.” Aurora nodded, smiling. “Truly, chocolate and coffee instantly captivate people.” They laughed together.
This moment was one of Moris’s first major achievements. At last, he allowed people to taste the flavor of science.
