Chapter 2:
How the wicked witch became the hero's sidekick
Uriel,
the
dreaded witch of the enchanted forest, is an antagonist in the
fantasy novel "The
Hero's Destiny"
I read. She brought plagues and curses to the people.
But the hero,
as the patron saint of hope for humanity, has interfered in her dark
machinations and incurred her displeasure. She attempts to kill the
hero on his journey to the magician of the north to save the princess of the
kingdom but fails and is killed instead. It is said that the witch
cooperated with the magician, but why is not mentioned. She is just a stepping
stone of the story to make the journey of the hero more exciting.
And
unfortunately that's
literally
me...
Fortunately
I have the knowledge about the magic of Uriel and am able to
use
her powers as I please. I have been living as Uriel for 1 year now. I
kind of accepted it, as I don't
need
much, and this life is at the moment better than my old life.
It's
morning, and
with a sweeping hand movement, I light up a purple
magical fire under the big cauldron. I have the ability to use dark
purple flames, which can burn everything... really everything!
On
my first day in this world I nearly burned down this
hut as I lit up a fire on a bush before the doorstep. Fortunately, I
was able to extinguish the flames by magically floating over water
from near the hut to the fire site. After this first shock I was able
to use her powers without mistakes. I healed a little bird harmed by
my fire. But it felt like I was healing a hundred at once. It seems like my healing magic consumes a lot more of my mana than dark magic. Strange... so usually I dont heal.
With
my dark flames I am able to burn everything. But a witch who can
use healing magic? Is it not ironic for a wicked witch to have
powerful healing skills like a saint?
I mean, an antagonist can heal
himself, but when do antagonists heal others? On the evil side is no
healing!
I dont want to die..., even if a witch can't die that easily. Also I don't
want to harm others or go for world domination. So my main goal is to stay out of the story. If the story ends
smoothly eventually there is a way for me to get a happy ending
either or
at least stay alive. It is not that I have no hope to ever get home,
but I don't
want to give myself false hopes, as I probably died. I accepted all,
but I will not accept the fate of death. Not again. I know this is a
fictional world, and sometimes I don't
know if I interact with real people or well-written characters. But I
wish for the happy end of the story and some kind of happy end for
me.
But back to the present. After drinking the tea I brewed in the
cauldron, I close my eyes and wrap myself in bright purple light. My
hair starts to change to white and my eyes become golden.
My disguise
spell was the first skill I perfected to be able to disguise myself
and hide the presence of my magical
power in front of others.
I created a fake identity by changing my
appearance to look less like a witch. Under my old name,
Aria, I pretend to be a normal human and visit the small city named
"shimmer grove" near the forest to collect informations on
how far the story went and to sell herb tea to survive.
Some kind of
first step to my happiness as someone who is a normal person, or, to
be exact, to life as a human without anyone knowing the opposite. I
visit the city once a week. Same today. And the drama begins.
Dressed in a typical purple medieval laced dress, with white hair, golden eyes, and a dark robe on, I pack my bag with some coins I earned. I take a dagger with a curved ornate handle from the drawer and tie it on my belt. I put another little dagger in my right leather boot. As I should not use my powers in public, I prepare otherwise in advance.
I close the door behind me and seal the door with a magic circle with a hand weaving.
I
follow a long path through the forest. Normally there are no humans
on the way, or If so, only on the edge of the forest, because they
fear the infamous witch.
So me, I guess...
After about an hour I stand
before the big city gate. Passing through the crowd of humans
running in and out the city, I walk down a paved street. I walk past
numerous little shops for books, groceries, clothes, jewelry and so
on. It's always
interesting to walk through this different world and see all the
people. Even though I've been here
for a year now.
"Big news," somebody shouts.
An announcement is currently being made in the marketplace so I walk nearer to check if they are announcing interesting news. The speaker seems quite nervous, like he is about to drop some really big news.
"The princess was kidnapped by the mage of the north. The hero was commissioned to rescue the princess and is currently in the process of building a team to beat the mage. Strong healers and fighters are called to join the mission."
All the people around me became very nervous and whispered at once.
"That's suicide."
"No one is powerful enough to beat the mage."
"Who would join such a hopeless mission?"
Everyone
visibly fears the Mage of the North.
I
have to admit that I'm
also nervous. I knew this would happen. But the course decides my
destiny, not exactly insignificant. As the hero should be in the
city by now, I should leave as soon as possible to hide in my hut and
wait to see how the story unfolds.
I run all the way back to my hut.
I have to stop near my house. A man covered in blood is lying on the
ground. With blond, middle-lenght hair, a black robe on, and a sword
with a golden handle lying next to him.
"That
can't be!"
I come near and open his eyelid with two fingers to check his eye
color. After seeing his dark blue eyes, I fall back and shout.
"Why destiny? Why is the male lead and hero of this story lying wounded not more than 10 meters away from my doorstep?"
