Reluctant Redemption

The ground cracks beneath me and I let a blood-curdling scream slip from my mouth as I fall.

I didn’t tell you that you could go, human.” A chilling voice echoes, and I freeze in mid-air.

I can’t win here. That much is clear.

“Ah, sorry… I’m a bit busy at the moment.” I lie, lacing my voice with honey.

I hear a loud, sharp laugh coming from the dark in response. “You’re dead, human.” He says again.

I cast my mind back to try and understand where he’s coming from.

Nothing…

You’ve made a few foolish mistakes. Not just in your own world, but with me.” He repeats.

You don’t get to live a peaceful death.” He pauses.

Die a peaceful death…? Live a life…? Forget it.” He mutters under his breath.

“You crossed me. So you now, forever, to eternity until I can forgive you, work for me.”

He turns his face so I can see properly.

He lifts his chin triumphantly and I can make out a wide smile carved in his face.

His eyes like embers glow from underneath his cloak.

My heart skips a few beats as I realise what I’ve just done.

I’ve sealed my fate- and I’m going to regret it for the rest of my dead life.
