Chapter 2:
Anima
(Lieutenant)...
(Lieutenant)...
"Lieutenant!"
A loud voice woke up Adrian. He could barely see, but loud noises entered
his ears. He moved only a little bit, but he felt his entire body ache.
"Lieutenant!"
A voice next to him shouted loud towards him. He looked left, and man with short hair and a mustache, covered in white armour, stood next to the bed he was lying in.
"Oh thank the god Aria you are awake!"
Adrian felt confused. He was in a room with Thymon when an explosion happened, but where was he now?
"Where am I?"
Adrian rather nonchalantly pressed for an answer.
"Where you are, Lieutenant? We are on the battlefield! How much did you forget?"
It sounded more like a sneer than anything else, and Adrian’s face whitened.
"The battlefield..." he muttered.
"Yes Lieutenant, we are fighting against the soldiers of the province of Eldara. Proceed to the General’s tent once you are ready. Make it quick."
The soldier most likely saw Adrian’s stunned face, but proceeded to leave the tent, which was filled with some simple beds, with haste. If there was indeed a battle taking place, where would Adrian even run. He does not know where he is, nor does he even know if he is himself. Whatever was going on, lying in a make-shift hospital wouldn’t make it any better. De-
spite the pain, Adrian got up, and dressed himself with the armour that lay next to him.
He had never worn anything as video-game like as a piece of armour, but for some reason he was able to put it on without any problems. With a quick glance, he saw other soldiers walking in and out the tent, yet none of them wore armour like the soldier who had woken him up. Must have been someone important.
Finding the way to the tent of the General was not as difficult as Adrian had thought. The tent wore a brighter blue colour, in comparison to the brown-like tents scattered around the area. "Lieutenant Tarper, it is wonderful to see you back on your own feet again. It had me rather worried that someone of such importance to the army had suddenly disappeared without notice."
Adrian realized that he did not simply get transported from one place to another, even if this was one big prank organized by Thymon.
"I am likewise very relieved to be able to continue my duties as Lieutenant."
Adrian had to meet the demands of formality, as it seemed the person in
front of him was his superior. Without noticing, the soldier in white armour stood next to Adrian without muttering a word. The General then continued.
"Lieutenant, platoon leader Dexter, let me drop the formalities and simply bring you an update of the current situation."
A platoon leader huh.
"As we know, the Eldaran army is attacking us from our North border. The Capital province of Lunthera has decided that aiding this defence is not necessary, even though all three provinces share their borders with each other. Ganmera has also refused their support as getting their troops from the South of Altirra to the North will take too much time, and simply too
large of a toll on their army. It is as such that we are left to our own devices. This is probably the worst scenario that Altirra could have ended up in. Although I want to stay optimistic, the reality is that the chance of us being able to defend the North border is becoming rather bleak."
Adrian heard multiple names he didn’t recognize, but he was trying to map out what the provinces look like based on the information given by the General.
"I would be happy to hear if you have any suggestions gentleman."
Adrian’s mind was not thinking about any solution when suddenly he said something that popped up in his mind:
"Can we not go around?"
"Around? What do you mean going around, Lieutenant?"
"Well, if we cannot hold them back on our border, why not fight them on a border that is not ours? If we fight against Eldara on another province’s border, we do not lose any ground ourselves. In the best case scenario we surprise them, guaranteeing our win."
The General looked at me with his eyes wide-open, seemingly stunned. It was then not the General, but the platoon leader who spoke up.
"And how does that benefit Altirra if we do this. By sending our troops to someone else’s border, do we not leave ourselves vulnerable on our border?"
"A very valuable conclusion platoon leader, and what you say contains the truth. In order for such an attack to succeed, we will need to time it perfectly and in such a way we attack them while they do not attack us."
The General, whose name is apparently Strefer, agreed to the plan Adrian suggested. It was not water-proof, but based on the strategy games he had played on Earth, and the history lessons about war, it was more likely to succeed than simply attacking the enemy head-on. General Strefer agreed, and said he’d rather go down fighting than sending his men to a meaningless death. Adrian wondered why they were even fighting a war in the first place. On Earth it never resulted in any good, so why would it here?
Three days passed since the moment Adrian had woken up. He was still not used to the situation he was in, but no one would believe him if he'd say he came from a different country, let alone a different world. His plan was to end the war, and then find a way to transport himself back home. He had experience doing research for his work, but devising an entire war-plan was something that even he could not do without help. He found out that there were a dozen platoons present on the North-Altirran border, ready for when disaster would inevitably strike. He requested the presence of each one, asking their opinion and explaining his expectations for each respective platoon. He was the lieutenant of the army, yet he did know whether or not he could actually make demands of his comrades. None of them seemed to object, so it seemed he stood above them in ranking. Adrian had planned out each step of operation, and even the General was impressed by his work.
"It seems I underestimated you work Lieutenant. This is a rather devious plan you have procured."
"I accept your compliment humbly General."
"No need to be so formal. No matter what the outcome is, and whether or not this plan comes to fruition, or fails miserably, we tried. I therefore want to thank you, Adrian."
He used my first name. Does that mean he knows I am not from this world?
"Your leadership allows this General."
Adrian knew this was not a lie, yet it sounded too formal, almost sarcastic.
During the days that passed Adrian had found out more about the situation the army found itself in. The country was divided into six provinces, of which two, Altirra and Eldara, were currently in war. The origins of the war go back too long for Adrian to have figured out exactly, but the main crux of it lied within the economic difference between the two provinces. Both provinces were adjacent to a large ocean, whereas the other provinces were landlocked. As such, both Altirra and Eldara thrived economically from the trade over sea. Yet certain regulations had been proposed by the one province, limiting the others development. Without the expectation of an agreement, war was the only option. Adrian was summoned into this world a year into the dispute, with no end of it in sight, unless his plan would work.
While he was dazing away, a loud siren went off, and screaming of soldiers around the terrain followed.
"The Eldarans are here!"
