Chapter 15:
The Heavenly Swords - The Three Kingdoms - Vol 1
The battlefield roared with the clash of steel and the cries of men. Sun Jian's forces, though valiant, were struggling to breach the Yellow Turbans who were garrisoned in Wan Castle. The siege engines, their only hope for a swift victory, lay in ruins, victims of the rebels' desperate defense. Frustration gnawed at Sun Jian, his brow furrowed as he surveyed the stalemate.
Beside him, Khan Bei observed the chaos with a serene intensity. His keen eyes, honed by years of studying both the human body and the ebb and flow of battle, saw the solution that had eluded Sun Jian.
"My lord," Khan Bei's voice cut through the din, "allow me to open a path."
Sun Jian, startled by the healer's sudden assertiveness, turned to him. "Khan Bei, you are a healer, not a warrior," he protested, concern etched on his face.
Khan Bei's lips curved into a knowing smile. "Remember, my Lord, I am also the Heavenly Sword of Balance," he reminded him, his hand resting on the hilt of his massive podao. "And balance can be achieved through force when necessary."
Before Sun Jian could respond, Khan Bei strode towards the imposing castle gate, his figure radiating an aura of calm amidst the chaos. Arrows rained down, flames licked at his feet, but he remained unfazed, his connection to the earth shielding him from harm. The Heavenly Sword of Balance walked through the battlefield with the solid strength of a mountain.
Sun Jian watched, his inner monologue a whirlwind of awe and trepidation. “The power of a Heavenly Sword... I had forgotten. He is not merely a healer; he is a force of nature.”
The rebels watched as one man approached the main gate without fear or signs of concern. They rained arrows on him, but for some reason none of them reached the solitary man that carried a weapon far too large and unwieldy. Even as fire was dropped onto him, he remained unscathed as that faint yet powerful glow intensified when he reached the massive gate.
As Khan Bei stoof before the gate, he drew his podao, the air humming with the weapon's latent energy and held it aloft in his two hands. Sun Jian's heart pounded in his chest. “Can he truly do this? Can one man, even a Heavenly Sword, break through such a fortified gate?”
“Mother Earth, grant me your strength… one more time.” Khan Bei’s words were a soft breeze in the wind of the battlefield, but his plea had an almost immediate effect on the man. His whole body began to glow with a strong, yet calm jade energy. His arms, already a picture of perfect human conditioning, showed his veins bulging, his muscles became as strong as stone. He looked like he had become one with the very Earth itself. “Thank you…”
With a guttural roar, Khan Bei swung the massive weapon and brought it down with all his strength as the earth itself seeming to tremble beneath his feet. The gate, which had withstood countless assaults, splintered and buckled under the immense force, crashing open with a thunderous boom.
Sun Jian's doubts vanished, replaced by a surge of adrenaline and awe. “He did it! The path is open!”
"ATTACK!" Sun Jian roared, his voice echoing across the battlefield. His soldiers, reinvigorated by Khan Bei's display of power, surged forward, a wave of steel and fury that crashed through the broken gate, carrying with them the promise of victory and the dawn of a new era.
Sun Jian's trust in Khan Bei deepened. He had witnessed the true power of the Heavenly Sword of Balance, a power that transcended mere healing and extended to the very essence of the earth itself. With Khan Bei by his side, Sun Jian knew that the path to restoring the land was not only possible but inevitable.
Some time after the battle…
The echoes of battle faded, replaced by the groans of the wounded and the hushed whispers of awe. Khan Bei, his face now etched with fatigue, moved among the fallen, his calming touch a stark contrast to the raw power he had displayed moments before. His hands, no longer glowing with the earth's energy, worked with practiced precision, tending to wounds, applying poultices, and offering words of comfort.
The soldiers watched him with a mixture of reverence and hushed fear. They had seen him as a healer, a compassionate figure who mended their wounds and eased their pain. But now, they had also witnessed the awesome power he wielded, the ability to bend the earth to his will and shatter the unyielding gates of the enemy's stronghold with a single swing of his sword!
Sun Jian, observing the scene from a distance, felt a shiver run down his spine. The image of Khan Bei, his podao cleaving through the massive gate with the force of an avalanche, was etched into his memory. He had seen firsthand the devastating power of a Heavenly Sword, a power that could reshape the battlefield in an instant.
“Such power,” Sun Jian mused, his inner voice laced with both admiration and caution, “is a double-edged sword. It can be a force for good, a weapon to protect the innocent and uphold justice. But it can also be a source of destruction, a tempest that can consume everything in its path.
He watched as Khan Bei, his energy depleted, focused solely on healing the wounded. The contrast between the warrior who had shattered the gate and the gentle healer who now tended to his comrades was striking.
“He is a man of balance,” Sun Jian realized, “a true embodiment of his title. He wields immense power, but he also possesses the wisdom and compassion to control it.”
Sun Jian's respect for Khan Bei deepened. He understood that the Heavenly Swords were not merely weapons to be used, but forces to be respected, their power to be wielded with utmost care and consideration.
“I must tread carefully,” Sun Jian's inner voice cautioned, “Khan Bei has pledged his service to me, but I must never forget the immense power he holds. I must earn his trust, prove my worthiness as a leader, and ensure that his power is used for the good of the people, not for personal gain or ambition.”
The victory at the castle was a turning point for Sun Jian. It was not just a military triumph, but a lesson in leadership, a reminder that true power lies not in brute force alone, but in the wisdom to wield it with balance and compassion. And with Khan Bei, the Heavenly Sword of Balance, by his side, Sun Jian knew that he had found a guide, a mentor, and a powerful ally who would help him navigate the treacherous path towards a united and peaceful land.
