Billy hurried back to the restaurant, gripping his credit card tightly. He tried to keep a normal expression, but inside he was still rattled by what had just happened.
When he reached Marie, he forced a little smile and said,“Turns out I found my card… It was hidden in my pocket. I guess I just didn’t feel it earlier.”
He preferred to lie rather than admit the truth—that the card had suddenly appeared in his hand out of nowhere. Who would believe a story like that? He definitely didn’t want Marie to think he was crazy.
He paid for the meal. Marie thanked him for the dinner, and Billy, still a bit embarrassed, replied,
“No problem.”
They said their goodbyes, each heading home their own way.
When Billy got back to his apartment, he collapsed onto his bed, exhausted. He stared at the ceiling and thought, If only I could never feel tired…
