Chapter 5:

Episode 5

Summoned to fight the Seven demonesses

Shiro was caught in the chaos, no weapon no armor on top of a wall actively taking fire from a yet to be seen foe. Soldiers rallying to the top of the wall, wind mages starting to cast spells and objects falling from the sky . The A Sargent bellows out orders, including "get off the wall and into your gear you idiot!"
Shiro stumbled down the steps trying to not impede the soldiers racing to their positions. Several shove and press him until he finds himself standing in front of a quartermaster "Saint dammit," The man grumbles "We run those drills for a reason and that is to MAKE SURE I AM NOT ISSUING GEAR IN THE MIDDLE OF A BLOODY FIGHT!" He shoves a set bundle of armor and glaive into Shiro's arms, not knowing what else to do Shiro does his best to put it on, his only saving grace is that quartermaster is quickly occupied with others seeking last minute provisions as well and does not see Shiro struggle like a newborn calf into the provide armor.
Some pieces are to small and others to large compared to the custom made gear he had been using and he wondered how much of it was him not getting the straps right.
Hopefully he would remember to have Lily teach him after this. Unsure what to do next with the gear now being passably on he catches sight of a white glaive marking an ice mage, the adrenaline preventing the obvious question of 'how many ice mages are in this fortress, he runs over and falls in with the squad behind the ice mage and does not realize until the ice mage turns around at the portcullis to give a battle cry that he is in the wrong unit.

Lily ran towards the hero's quarters desperate to get there in time to help Shiro don his gear, when she burst through the door she had expected him to be already there, helplessly making a mess of the straps and plates, but the room was quite.
The bed slightly disturbed from where he had preformed his habit of laying on it before getting under the covers, but no sign of him otherwise. What was she supposed to do? she waited, the horns switching from frantic alarms to the somewhat ordered field coordination, charge on the left, more defenders on the right, artillery now, mage barrage over there.
Still no Shiro.
She was torn now, it was entirely possible that he had gotten lost in the fortress or had not understood the signals.
He could have also ran into Knight Commander Wildingmonte and gotten dragged into the command tower to watch the battle while getting side eyed for not having his gear on during an active operation. If she was wrong though, if he was just delayed but still on his way did she really want to run the risk of his displeasure should he return and find her not waiting to help him? Her father had in less obviously stressful situations become an entirely different person, would the normally docile and caring Shiro be the same?
So she chose to wait, but while she did she started arranging his armor the best she could to ensure they could equip it fast as possible.

Blood, screams, heat, cold overwhelmed Shiro as spell and blade whistled past him. He tried to fall into a trance and let his training take over like he had heard about in movies, but he only had a few months of muscle memory and as he misjudged again his glaive length, disrupting his neighbor's swing, he was keenly reminded that he was currently a liability to his own side. Then again was he even sure he wanted to spill the blood of others for a cause he did not understand? The ebb and flow of bodies surged again driving thought from mind refilling the well of desperation. In the distance he vaguely noticed the tree line move.

Ezma cooed softly to the infant and watched the battle unfold below. The Elves and humans were equally matched on the ground now that the human mages had made the air above the above to hostile for use by the elven cavalry . Otherwise this would be a pretty ones sided encounter.
She frowns as she looks at the sky, normally it would be a lot more turbulent as one side's mages fought to keep it inhospitable and the other sought to clear it, but there was no signs of the elves fight to clear the sky. Which usually meant…..there! Her eyes swept the battle field until they lighted on the wood line across from the fortress, she changed the tune of song she was crooning to the child and her eyes cleared to see the swirls of energy and spell. "Oh gods" she breathed as the trees knit themselves together and stood with a mighty roar.

Shiro whipped around at the roar and had trouble believing his eyes as the forest stood up. Suddenly he understood, the elves had done everything they could to cluster the Kingdom's forces for a rampaging colossus to squash on its way to the fortress,

The fortress where Lily is
The fortress with Ezma and the baby
This cannot stand
Defending them is a cause he can get behind
A light fills the battlefield
Shiro stands before the colossus
