Chapter 4:
Her Royal Highness, the Convenience Store Clerk
Another day, another lonely day. That's what I thought to myself as I sat in the classroom, all alone. No one else was here yet, just me.
It was quite a nice day, I would say. The sun shone brightly, as if greeting me, and birds chirped peacefully from the trees outside. An introverted person like me couldn't ask for more.
I settled into my usual seat, near the window in the back, on the right side corner of the room. In manga and anime, this was often called the main character's seat, as protagonists almost always sat there.
I didn't think I was a main character, though. That was far from happening; that was the reality.
With that thought, I opened my bag and took out the manga I'd bought just days ago, on the day that incident happened.
「Uwahhh... The third sister is cute as always.」
It was one of my favorite manga series: The Five Equal Brides. I didn't usually read manga in the classroom; I always went to the library for these kinds of books.
But this time, I was alone. Still no one in the room. I planned to hide it once someone came, but since no one was here yet, I continued reading.
Unfortunately... I was so engrossed in the manga that I didn't notice someone had already entered the classroom.
「Ooooh, isn't that a manga?! You read something like that, Hoshikawa-kun?」
A familiar figure approached me: a blonde girl with a ponytail. And alongside her was another familiar person.
The familiar person who approached me was Kiyo Nakano-san, and behind her was Ao Kizuki-san.
I was done for... Definitely. Nakano-san would surely laugh at me. How I wished she were one of the sisters from the manga I was reading. I'd even accept her as the first, but she was definitely the second sister type.
Fortunately... luck was on my side. She didn't laugh at me or make fun of me; instead...
「Is that...? The Five Equal Brides?!」
「You know of it, Kiyo? I'm surprised.」
I was surprised too, of course. She was a gyaru... I thought gyarus hated this kind of thing. Or was I wrong?
Before I could say anything, she said,「Well, I never told you about it, Ao, or any other girls, but it's actually one of my hobbies. Reading manga and even watching anime.」
She added,「The reason I'm only telling you this now, Ao, is because maybe you'd hate these kinds of things too. Our friends say it's lame and such. You don't think the same, do you?」
Then, a loud noise came from someone flicking a forehead. It was Kizuki-san, flicking Nakano-san's forehead. Quite a déjà vu.
「Ouchh! What was that for, Ao...?」she asked, holding her forehead in pain.
「There's no way I would think like that. That's your hobby, so why should I be disgusted by it? We've been friends for a long time now, so hmph.」She replied, grumpy about what her friend had just said.
It was funny to me. I guess that's how kind Kizuki-san was. One of the reasons she was so well-known at school.
Without realizing it, I found myself laughing.
「What are you laughing at now, Hoshikawa-kun?! It hurts, okay?!」
「Sorry, sorry... Haha...」I said, apologizing. Though, it really was funny.
「But well, Hoshikawa-kun... You seem interesting, you know? Why don't we be friends then and talk about manga?! Though, not around my other friends, though.」Nakano-san said, smiling at me.
Kizuki-san, on the other hand, added,「If it's fine with you two, let me join you. Just teach me about it.」
Ehh? Kizuki-san too? Me? Being friends with them? I couldn't imagine it... But it seemed that Kizuki-san hadn't told Nakano-san yet about what happened not long ago.
But that didn't matter... They were asking me to be their friends. That's what I needed to think about now. No... It wasn't something I needed to think about. I knew my answer.
I smiled. Then... 「Why not? Let's have lots of talk about it then, Nakano-san! And as for Kizuki-san, you'll definitely like it!」I said it in a different way than usual. It was the first time I'd spoken so happily.
With that, Nakano-san and Kizuki-san smiled.
「Well, then... It's nice to meet you, Hoshika— no... Yoshino! Just call me Kiyo, it's fine!」
That fast?! I was calling her by her first name already?! This was the energy of a gyaru; it was overwhelming.
On the other hand, Kizuki-san said,「It would be weird if you're still calling me by my last name when you're calling Kiyo by her first name. Ao is fine for me too.」She said it shyly, holding her mouth with her hands.
「Quite a shy girl you are, Ao. Fufu...」
I never thought I would get this opportunity. I really never thought.
With that, I happily called them by their first names.
「Ao, Kiyo, it's nice to meet you! Let's have fun!」
Kiyo replied,「Yeah! Let's have fun!」
By her side, Ao nodded in agreement.
In this classroom, fortunately, no other students were here yet. Here we were, three of us, smiling alongside each other. Something I never thought would happen: an interaction between my world and the school's princess.
...
...
「By the way, who's your favorite sister among them?」
「I have already ended the story with a narration, though?! But yeah... It's the third sister.」
「Who cares about that? It hasn't ended yet. By the way, mine's the fifth sister. Hehe.」
「Just stop now, you two! Kiyo, let's go, or else our friends will know 'that,' you know?!」
「Ehh?」 With that, we exchanged contacts first, and Kiyo reluctantly agreed with her to go.
She was a gyaru but quite childish. It was funny.
But well, their friends couldn't know about it, and they definitely couldn't know that they were already talking to me. It was sad, but that was my reality here. I was quite seen as the lowest person here.
Well, who cares... Anyway, that's all. I'm ending it this here.
But never did I think that this interaction would be a big change to our story together... Alongside Kiyo, that is...
