Chapter 7:

Let's break this curse before it breaks us

How the wicked witch became the hero's sidekick

According to legends, Kodama are invisible forest spirits who live deep in the forests in old trees. They are little greenish humanlike creatures, but they only appear visible in front of people with pure hearts. In the novel they showed up visible to Rosa the priestess and gave her useful advice. They are normally friendly to humans, except when you chop down the holy trees they live in…

"Knox? Caspian? Your misfortune started after you chopped this pine tree.
Am I right?"

"How do you know?" Knox asks, surprised.

"Because you are cursed by the Kodama for cutting their home into pieces of wood.
If we do nothing, you will be plagued by misfortune forever!"

"Really? Caspian told me to chop it," Knox says, irritated.

Caspian answers, outraged, "I just wanted you to finally chop the wood. No tree was good enough for you!"

"Stop it! We have no time to argue," Lionel shouts.

"He turns to me. Do you know how to lift this curse?"

"I am not sure. After thinking for a bit, I say. "We can try to contact them, ask for forgiveness, and offer something as compensation? ... I don't know if this works, but I have no other idea."

"That's the only idea we have. So let's try! Knox, Caspian, show us where you chopped the tree!" says Lionel in a commanding tone.

"No need for orders; we're already going," Caspian says, unsettled.

But since he fears for his life, he and Knox begin to lead us to the spot. As we wander through the lush bushes, the darkness is illuminated by the moonlight of the clear night.

Knox and Caspian continue to experience bad luck, which considerably lengthens the otherwise short distance. One thing for sure, walking too near to them is a very bad idea, as bad luck has no boundaries...

While walking, a bee stock fell in front of Caspian to the ground.

"AAAHHH!" he shouts.

In panic, he runs down the hill we are walking through. But without being able to stop, he runs towards me and Lionel.

Lionel, who was about to dodge, suddenly stops and pushes me aside. Objectively, it's a smart decision. The healer should always be protected. But subjectively, it's stupid. Very stupid! Because Caspian pulls Lionel down a small slope. Both land on a ledge more or less unscathed.

Knox jumps to the edge to see if they are fine.
Afraid of falling down too, I get on my knees and crawl close to the edge to look down.

"Are you ok?" We shout.

"We are fine," Caspian shouts until he looks at his left leg pierced by a stick.
"Ahh, I am not fine!"

Lionel, mostly unharmed, tries to calm the panicking Caspian down.

"Calm down, Caspian; we have to fix your leg so we can climb back to the others."

I shout, "Don't pull the stick out. We don't know if it hit an artery.
Otherwise he might bleed to death before I can heal him."

"What did she say?" Caspian screams in panic to Lionel.

"Nothing, just stay still. Lionel tears his robe into pieces and fixes Caspian's leg with it and another stick for stabilization.

"Lionel, we have known each other since we were kids. If I don't make it, please tell Elia that I admired her and I died gloriously."

"The one in Frostvale with blonde hair? or the one with brown curly hair? Or one of the girls in Shimmer Grove?" Lionel says uninterested while preparing his leg.

"Neither..." Capian says.

"Stop blabbering nonsense and come here, Lionel says."

Caspian holds on to Lionel's shoulders while Lionel begins to climb back up the ledge with great effort.

"Keep up, Lionel," calls Caspian.

Lionel glances at him briefly, with a  dark expression.

Caspian says, slightly startled, "Never mind, you'll get it..." and becomes silent.

Almost at the top, Knox grabs Lionel and Caspian by the collar and pulls them the last few inches up.

I instantly jump to Caspian. "We have to remove the branch fast so that I can heal his wounds."

"What?" Caspian asks, "Just leave it there. I'll just live like this. It's no big DEEAAAL...!" he shouts, while Knox removes the branch without a warning.

I instantly begin to cover his leg in my healing light until his wounds fade, as I have no time to lose. After his wound is healed, I exhale, relieved.

"Lionel are you fine, or should I heal you too?"

I ask, hoping that he says no. As this was tiring enough.

"I'm fine", Lionel adds.

"Ok, but I will give you medical care later so that your wounds don't become infected. Relieved that I don't have to overextend myself, I grab a mana potion from my bag and take some sips. Much better.

As Caspian is now fine, we continue our walk and stand before the clearing where everything began.

"Looks like a normal forest for me," Lionel says.

Normal? So no one except me sees all this. Small bridges are spanned between some of the trees. Small windows and doors are set in the trees, and small, greenish, humanlike creatures scurry around everywhere, constantly harassing Knox and Caspian from a safe distance.

The Kodama. I look at them, stunned. A small female Kodama steps forward.

"She can see us!" she cries out, alarmed.

Another exclaims, "Does she have a pure heart? No, obviously not."

"What do you mean, obviously not?" I say, puzzled and a little pissed off. The others look at me irritated.

"She's not human...but  a witch...! We're doomed," the little creatures scream as they run back and forth in panic.

"Who are you talking to?" asks Knox.

"The Kodama," I reply.

"But it's completely quiet here," Caspian says, irritated.

Maybe for them! I, on the other hand, have a miniature mass panic in my ears that I have to discreetly end...
