Chapter 9:

You choose the wrong opponent

How the wicked witch became the hero's sidekick

After seeing the horrified faces of the others, everything around me went dark. The beast drags me across the floor, deeper and deeper into the cave. On the walls emerges, little by little, some kind of luminous moss, which wraps the cave in a soft blue light. Now that I can see a little, I stab my dagger in one of the beast's bloodshot red eyes, without thinking further.

"Shrgg!"

"Craahhh!" shouts the beast.

Instead of loosening its jaws, the beast bit down harder.

"Ahh!" I scream in pain and try to free myself from its mouth.

I guess I have no choice. I didn't want to have to use my powers so soon... My hair begins to turn deep red from the roots, and my eyes turn poisonous green, while my body is engulfed in purple flames.

The beast begins to roar in pain as the flames begin to consume its beak. It throws me sideways, and I crash to the ground. I slowly stand up, covered with abrasions and some little flesh wounds. You dragged the wrong one of us into the cave. I hate being hurt; now you will pay. Slightly unsteady and surrounded by flames, I slowly stand up.

"Aria!!! Where are you?" Lionel and the others shout.

They mustn't see me like this. I'd rather clear the field for the hero. Lucky beast! The enraged beast also reacts to the others and looks toward the approaching footsteps. I seize the moment and hide in a crevice behind a ledge.

Out of sight, I call out, "Don't come any closer; the beast is here!"

As if that statement would stop them from coming closer. They are heroes after all. From my hiding place, I can see the others positioning themselves in front of the beast, ready to strike it down.

Meanwhile, I'm focusing on suppressing my magic and restoring my appearance.
A slight golden light shimmers over my wounds as they slowly begin to heal. Fortunately this witch body has great regenerative powers, so I don't need to use my healing powers for myself.

The fight with the beast begins. Lionel runs toward the beast, which repeatedly tries to slash him with its beak. He dodges in a sprint and cuts the beast's chest.

"Zap!"

Meanwhile, Caspian shoots arrows at the beast from a distance, landing several hits on its upper body.

The beast screams, "CRAAAHHH!!!"

But this hardly seems to affect it. While the beast is distracted by the two, Knox sprints from the side and jumps onto the beast's back. He swings his axe and plunges it into its back. The beast rears up, hurling Knox, along with his axe, against the rock wall.

The beast starts to ram its claws into the ground next to Caspian. The ground cracks and lifts away from the claws. Caspian is about to dodge but staggers and is knocked sideways by a subsequent blow from the beast. Meanwhile, an arrow is released from Caspian and flies towards Lionel.

"Watch out!" I shout from my hiding place.

Thanks to his quick reaction, he only suffers a graze on the cheek. But while he is distracted, the beast saw his chance and lifts its claws to hit Lionel. He won't be able to dodge that either. I have to act.

As I am able to move something with my magic, I can also pull things from a distance with magic. My hands begin to glow purple, and I make a movement as if I'm pulling something backwards. At the same time, the beast's tail feathers glow in a faint purple, and the beast tips backwards.

That's his chance. Lionel runs head-on toward the beast, swinging his sword, suddenly bathed in bright light. One blow, and the beast dissolves into a blazing light. The scattered particles disappear as if they are burning. And the beast is no more.

They are really a good team. I wish I had some popcorn to enjoy this fight. But fights are not that fun to watch when you are getting hurt too. After a brief sigh of relief, they look around searchingly, and I come out of my hiding place before they can call out to me.

"Aria," Caspian shouts, looking at me worriedly.

He seems to feel guilty about getting me caught while I was standing next to him.

"Don't worry, I'm okay," I say, covered in not-quite-healed wounds and traces of blood.

Although the others are covered in minor injuries too, they don't seem to care for themself.

"I will carry you; rest a bit," Knox says.

"No, I'm fine!" I shout, but Knox doesn't listen and throws me over his shoulder like a sack of potatoes.

"Waaiiit…" I shout while he lifts me up until I surrender my fate and hang over his shoulder.

"Let her down, Knox," Lionel says.

"We're really relieved that nothing happened to her. Knox will carry her so that she can rest until we get back to the village", Caspian says.

Lionel looks at me and I look at him hoping that he will help me out.

He looks away and says, "You are right, Caspian!"

Why? I thought he could read the mood. But obviously not.

"That's no good idea. At the moment he is cursed like you..." I shout.

As if I had predicted it, Knox trips over a rock and falls forward. I fly over his shoulders, imagining myself falling to the ground. I close my eyes, but the moment of impact is still a long way off. When I carefully open my eyes, I see that Lionel has caught me. While I'm lying in his arms, I glance back to see Knox still lying on the ground with his face down and Caspian leaning over him. Poor Knox, but you have to set priorities, I guess.

"You can put me down now; I must be heavy, I say to Lionel".

"I can carry that much; just rest."

Wait, carry that much? I am not that heavy!

"Just let me down."

"Just rest."

It's like I am speaking to a wall. They obviously all seem to think that I am weak.
If I wanted to, I could kill you all, but who cares?

As he doesn't seem to give in, I have no choice but to be carried. I'm not sure why, but to be carried by Knox like a potato sack was less uncomfortable than this...

After a while we see the daylight outside. The sun must have already set. While we leave the cave, the sunlight glares at us. Just one test left, then the actual quest can begin!
