Chapter 42:
When I bought That Suspect Baroque Closet and Lamp, I Didn't Expect to Be a Mundane Wizard for the Demon Prince of Another World
Kairo carefully observed Genie, who was eerily quiet on their way back to the villa. They had taken the long way home, navigating the joyous atmosphere like a pair of knives cutting through the thick of it to reveal a sober mood.
"Something has happened," he couldn't stop thinking as Genie led the way with measured steps. He felt worried and wasn't sure how to approach the man while he was in such a somber state of contemplation, which frankly was frightful.
Fortunately, their way back to their villa entrance courtyard was uneventful.
A few meters near the door, a feeling of malicious magic made Kairo stop with a gasp. The magic had touched the connection of his Spiritual Sea like a toothpick piercing a bubble.
"Kairo!" Genie noticed the change in Kairo's condition and surrounding static charge from magic dispersal. He cast a barrier spell over him and pulled out his daggers.
Kairo shook his head to clear the sensation, as his senses returned he saw masked assassins dropping to the ground to surround them.
"Stay close. I'll protect you."
But Kairo's Spiritual Sea had been pierced with a tampering spell intent to degrade his soul. It was gradually blocking his consciousness to the physical world. If he didn't do something to negate the spell, his spirit and soul form would be eaten away. Everything that was Kairo would cease to exist.
"Genie... cover me." He huffed for breath as he dropped to the ground, keeping up a fight for control of his body. His body eased into a crossed-leg position as he applied the Instant Meditation technique to enter his Spiritual Sea.
Genie nodded as he saw what Kairo was doing and met the assassin attackers' steel (stamped with a star emblem) with his dagger and crossbow attacks. Keeping them away from Kairo. Fortunately the area barriers prevented strong offensive magic from being used. So he could single-handedly fight the assassin ambush, balancing his weapon and low-powered magic attacks to eliminate the weak cannon fodder while he kept the strong opponents at bay.
Kairo stood within his spiritual sea and found the intruding magic trying to destroy the stars of his star chart. He glanced at the wizard restriction orb. Instinctively he moved his hands in a motion to gather his spirit energy to himself. White-silver light gathered around him to empower his aura.
He raised a finger and touched the Dog Star of the star chart. Cosmic energy rushed into his finger to fill his soul body with power.
A trillion memories and sensations moved through him to shatter and reform his body many times in a split second until he rose within his sea as a body of a god.
His white mage cloak fluttered and flowed at his back to draw the Canis Minor star system to it, lining the material and granting him the star system's power.
He raised Zeus, which shone with magnificent brilliance. With one swift movement, Zeus gathered the Wizard Restriction power and released it on the foreign magic attacking his Spiritual Sea.
The intruding magic dispersed as it was negated. The foreign magic had helped clear the restriction, which needed a similar power to neutralize it. It had been a blessing in disguise, as he now had greater access to his sea's power.
He swung Zeus in a rapid whirlwind to reset his energies to his Spiritual Sea and regenerate its strength ten times over.
Kairo instantly exited his sea and rose with his aura still empowered with cosmic energy.
Genie and his attackers momentarily paused their fight as they felt a burning light upon their faces; striking into their bodies' spirit network. The night was momentarily overpowered with the sun's radiance, which was coming from Kairo's aura.
"Timebound: stasis." Kairo's voice was stony and almost a whisper, but his words resonated fiercely into the attackers' minds to rattle their spirit channels and lock their network to his power.
Genie's heart raced fiercely when he saw every single attacker frozen in time. He looked uneasy at the power he was witnessing from Kairo who moved toward his enemy with slow, predatory, steps.
"You tried to break my sea. I will break yours." Kairo's eyes glowed silver as Zeus materialized in his hands.
He raised his scythe and swung it in an arc to spark lightning that pierced into every attackers' heart. His body moved at an astronomical speed as he finished them off with devastating blows. The assassins' bodies disintegrated until the ground was clear. It had been so fast not even a cry was uttered.
Kairo returned his weapon to his Spiritual Sea before his energy was completely drained from him.
"Kairo!" Genie rushed to catch him before he collapsed to the ground.
"It's okay Genie. I just need to rest for a bit."
Genie helped him up, inside and onto a sofa. He hastily sealed the villa in a protective barrier with what magic he had remaining, then sat down next to Kairo and fed a healing pill into his mouth.
"Thanks." Kairo smiled at Genie.
"You're proving more formidable each time you face a threat." Genie smiled weakly as he eased back on the sofa to catch his own breath.
"Magic tried to break my Spiritual Sea. But I was able to dispel it with the last of the restriction energy." Kairo sat up more when felt more of his energy restored and frankly added, "Besides, I couldn't look weaker than you."
"Ho! Who're you calling weak? I faced over ten attackers in an ambush back there!" Genie boasted with bravado. "You're the weak one getting off guard like that."
His mood fell into one of apology. "Sorry Kairo, I should've seen the attack coming, but my mind was too distracted on other things."
Kairo frowned with wonder at what was bothering him, which he suspected it was to do with the security of the palace and country. "Is it that bad?"
"It's the worst." Genie sighed and suggested they recover a bit more before calling a meeting with Lyon.
