Chapter 10:
Tales From Lion City
Blair saw the barrier open up from the alleyway. From the misty look on the inside, Leon, Travis, and Elijah were fighting whoever was around. She turned to Alison, who's power was already activated. She could summon a chain, which dangled in her hand without anything to attach it to. The two tried their best to make it through the streets. Nothing too major seemed to be happening on the street they were on, the one outside the Wasp gym seemed quiet, but Mateo approached them.
"Sorry to bother you, but would you accept one more?" He asked. His hands were already clasped in prayer as he awaited the response.
"Go ahead." Alison replied. "Just one condition. You go in front."
"I can do that."
"Alison, what are you doing?" Blair whispered as they made their way through the street. It was more relaxed than the main street Leon was fighting on, mostly just older gyms and casinos, and behind that was a few older apartment buildings.
"I mean, guys second in command of the football team. So if we run into something, he can handle it while we use our powers to fight them off."
"That's…a plan." Blair nodded slowly.
Suddenly, a scream was heard, and Ivan rushed out from another street. He locked eyes with the group and ran towards them, releasing a burst of speed that took him from in front of Mateo to behind Blair.
"Ivan, what's going on?" Blair asked.
"Where is he?" The man asked. He rushed out, looking dishevelled even in his fine midnight blue suit and slicked back shoulder length black hair. He looked unhinged as he tried fixing himself, clearly trying to make himself presentable to the three
"Hello there, children!" he said politely, stopping completely and handing the trio a business card each. Blair read it out. Junichi Shimamura, currently a god's assistant.
"Now then, I hope our relationship can be fruitful going forward!" He said with a bow. He pushed through the trio and continued his pursuit of Ivan, who gave another burst of speed away from him. But he found himself unable to move for a second, and the man landed a kick to his head, sending him through the air against a gym's window, which luckily didn't shatter. Junichi kept going, his smile never leaving his body, until something snagged his leg. He turned back, and Alison was holding a chain, now attached to his leg, while Mateo was approaching and Blair was flipping through her notebook. Junichi calmly raised his hand, and Blair felt her arms go numb, causing her to drop the book. Alison felt her own arms falter, but kept the chain on him. And when Mateo ran up to land a punch, he was caught with the raised hand, now with steam emanating off it. And he let go for a brief second, landing a punch to Mateo's stomach. He felt time stop around him, flying backwards and barely missing Alison. Junichi quickly dusted himself off and inspected his suit, right before glancing around for Ivan, who was already gone. So he looked around for the other three, before two light rifts opened behind him. Xaawo and Kuwaku.
"Ah!" Junichi said calmly. "What brings you two here?" He asked, his sentence trailing off as he noticed the state of Xaawo's clothes.
"Before you say anything, I am very aware and I want this to end so I can go home." She said, annoyed while putting a single finger to his mouth to shut him up. "Now, which were you targeting? We're gonna kill that one and go home."
"Well, my target seems to have run away."
"Dear god, you are useless." She sighed. "Whatever. eeny meeny miny that one."
Leon ran up the stairs to the building. It was an old set of apartments, mostly dilapidated with nothing even resembling life within them. He knew he just had to impress whoever was up there as he ran through the moldy walls and trying to avoid stepping on anything that might collapse the floors. And he finally got to the top floor, swinging the door open.
The woman stood with her back to him. He took the last soda can out of his pocket for a sneak attack, throwing it at her. The can fell to the ground before it could touch her.
"The same tactic as before?" She asked calmly. "Well, I suppose you don't know I saw that."
"What?" Leon asked.
"It's just that you seem a little…sloppier, then our first meeting would be."
"Okay? So fight me, I'll show you what I can do!"
He tried extending the hooks an attempt to prepare for whatever she'd end up throwing at him.
"As interesting as that sounds, I doubt it'll be necessary." She said calmly. "The round has concluded with a death. Possibly two."
"Wait, possibly-"
Leon felt a shockwave push him off the building. He used the hooks to attach to a random windowsill, which only held him for a brief moment before it broke, leaving him plummeting once again. But the stop was enough to make the landing less fatal.
"Well, players!" She announced. "That was a fun hour, but it's time to announce the results! Today's loser is miss Alison Saylor, who's our second elimination. And now, feel free to enjoy your next few days."
Beams of light took the masters away, leaving the players on the streets to process what happened.
Blair picked her notebook up, clutching it as she inspected Alison's body. It all came so fast. Once the order was given, the girl leapt first to attack her, only for the other guy to summon a spear and stab her through the heart once. Once the spear was removed, she was already dead. Collapsed on the ground, her face frozen in a state of shock from the split second before the impaling. She knelt to her side, trying to wake her up. This had to be some kind of bizarre magic trick. No way five gods could show up and just start killing people.
Mateo tried approaching her, but he was just as shook as she was. In one motion, she was gone. The only thing he wanted to know was what he could do to prevent any more deaths. This had to stop now. These were fakes. This was not any sort of god he knew.
Travis held back Elijah as he tried escaping his arms. Before them was Allan, slowly getting up to make his escape.
"Travis, let me go!" He commanded. "I'm your boss! I demand it!"
"I am a conscientious objector to that!" Travis yelled back, letting go when he knew Elijah wouldn't chase Allan down.
"If he shows up again, I'm killing him." Elijah said, putting his hands in his pocket and going towards the bus. Travis figured the thing on their mind could wait.
Janet stood outside, blinking at the announcement. She had survived. She slowly left the restaurant she hid in, checking if her guns and bullets were still in her coat. They were. She called a taxi back home, and as she waited outside, Evelyn passed by her. Her short pink hair was visible even through the sunglasses.
"So you just waited inside?" Evelyn asked.
"Yeah." She replied.
"Figured. You try buying your way out of this game?"
She walked off as the car arrived, letting her hop in. Buy her way out of the game, what? She knew Evelyn didn't have that high an opinion on her, but she thought it was for how loud her in school recording sessions could get. Still, the wealth wasn't exactly her fault. Still, she made sure to tip her driver more than she usually would before going back inside.
