Chapter 2:

A new beginning

Doomsday

She takes out her brass key. It's silent. I'm nervous. I can't tell when she's going to explode.

"How dare she waste my time on something so stupid!"

Her insults worsen in her native language. The words all sound like static to me. But her popped vein, and crude tone is enough to understand. With a hungry stomach, I rush upstairs. On my hands and knees, I pray. If there is a God please take away my sinful life.

Second day of the week It's normally slow. It's 10:00 a.m opening time, and a Marie is here again.

"Hi, good morning. I'm back. So sorry for earlier. I just wanted to make sure with the bride."

Her eyes light up with joy It's an expression. I haven't seen before. Mom only looks this happy when we've made about $5,000 at the end of the day.

"Why don't you guys come with me to church for the wedding?

"We will be there." I respond

My mom shakes her head. She tries her best to signal her reluctance.

"The wedding is on the 10th of August. See you soon."
