Chapter 2:

A new beginning

Doomsday

She takes out her brass key. It's silent. I'm nervous. I can't tell when she's going to explode.

"How dare she waste my time on something so stupid!"

Each insult begins to feel sharper as she adjusts to her native language. The words spoken sound like static. Characteristics such as the popped vein on her forehead, and crude tone are enough to understand the situation. Despite my hungry stomach, I skip dinner, and rush upstairs. On my hands and knees; I pray. If there is a God. Please take my life away.

Tuesday, the second day of the week is usually slow. Customers arrive closer to the afternoon. Only a handful of people are here at set times in the day. For the first part, it's during their lunch break. Maybe to browse or there is an upcoming event. I am unsure. Then, there are the stragglers that show up at 5:30 P.M. exactly. The lack of awareness for closing time is excruciating. Towards, the end, I clean up leftover trash, and organize forms. The door bell rings. Someone is here.

"Hi, I'm back. So sorry for earlier. I just wanted to make sure with the bride."

My mother's eyes light up with joy. For her, it is an uncommon expression.

"Why don't you guys come with me to church for the wedding?"

"We will be there." I respond

My mom shakes her head. She tries her best to signal her reluctance.

"The wedding is on the 10th of August. See you soon."
