Chapter 11:

They Aren't Human...

Magic lies carried me to the top, the summit where she is not.

How’s that possible? We weren’t the only ones?

“Quick! Hide!”

“*Uweh*”

She hid under the bed.

“Good, consider yourselves safe from the guillotine.” I said opening the doors of the room.

“Haha… thank you sir… But I’m amazed you were actually right.”

“Explain yourselves.”

“The intruders were lurking on the outsides of Lady Sara’s room. Only God knows why two top class assassins from Boréas were hired to kill her.”

Two top class assassins? Kill her? This isn’t the whole story… Magic earthquakes… scholar’s rebellion… What am I missing? Think… think… “The universe needs balance.” The Queen… she didn’t seem to like the idea of the wedding…? Why? She said the prince wasn’t interested in marriage… Why the sudden change of opinion? “Oh safe she is.” Why did he say it in a sarcastic tone?

Oh… Right… It was never about thinking… I knew it when we first arrived…

The smiles… They are not human…

“Where is the King! I need to inform him about something urgently!”

“Uhm… Due to the incident everyone has been asked to stay in their respective rooms, we can’t let you see him.”

“Then go inform him yourselves! We are all inside a time bomb! Not just the castle! The city! No… All of the kingdom is in danger!”

“What are you talking about sir…?”

“Listen there’s not much time-”

But out of nowhere—emerging from the dark corridor:

“I’m afraid your worries won’t be necessary, my dear brother-in-law. Guards, could you excuse us? I want to talk with Rey” We stood in shock. “Alone…”

As soon as I heard his voice I knew… I had come across a lot of his kind in my previous life. I became one of them myself, but it never affected me, I had nothing to be afraid of, I had nothing to lose. But now his voice sent shivers down my spine—as I turned to face him, his steps echoed deeper. And when I saw him—a mask was the only thing I saw. The mask of a prince.

“Prince Lloyd… you shouldn’t be-”

“I’m sorry, it seems you misunderstood. You’re gonna leave us alone. Aren’t you?”

“Yes sir…”

”That’s better.”

The guards left, and Lloyd asked:

“So? What were you saying?”

“Nothing… I just wanted to trick the guards to be able to get out of the room…”

“Really? Because I'm interested in our kingdom’s safety, you know? You shouldn’t be ashamed of sharing a theory, regardless of how ridiculous it may be.”

“It really was just an attempt to get out of the room.”

“Heeeeh… And why do you want to get out so badly?”

“I just wanted to look for my sister. I’m worried she might be feeling lonely… She must be scared after what happened...”

He could not maintain the act any longer—Through his mask the eyes of a sociopath laughed at me, and then a grin so twisted night itself feared, let out an actual giggle escape.

“Don’t worry about Sara, she’s not lonely, and this won’t be enough to scare her… not after what she saw.”

“After what she saw? What do you mean?! If you hurt her then!-”

“Then what?” He took a step closer. “Don’t worry about it, you’ll understand everything when you see her again, so rest well.” He put his hand on my shoulder.

“The heck are you talking about?!” I took a step back.

“Go sleep Rey. I’m sure you’re tired from the trip. Also, say goodnight to that pet of yours for me. If she feels uncomfortable make sure to let us know.”

“How do you…?”

Don’t worry, I won't say anything about her, as long as you don’t say anything about your crazy theories. Not that anyone would believe someone who was a baby just yesterday anyway.”

“For how long have you been spying on us?”

“Spying? Me? Hahaha. It seems you misunderstood. I haven’t spied on anyone, to be honest I didn’t know for certain if she was hiding in your room, but you have confirmed it yourself, haha. Spying? No. Do you really think someone like her could’ve passed unnoticed? I knew about her since before she arrived to the city. How dumb do you think I am? You don’t need an information network that big. *Sigh* Just get out of the way, I wont touch your toys as long as you don’t interfere with my games, got it?”

“Does that include Sara?”

“Of course! I’ll give her back to you when she’s no longer a useful piece.

“Can I take your word?”

“You do as you please. But I think you’ll trust me for not turning over your pet.”

“Don’t call her a pet!”

“Is she not?”

“No.”

“What kind of man engages with women for any other purpose than to raise them as pets?”

“The type that lost a sister to a man like you.”

“Hum. Then let me meet her sometime. I have the feeling you and I will be good friends, or at least good business partners. See you tomorrow.” He said, walking out of sight. Waving without looking back.

I went back to the room, and entering I was greeted with a hug.

“What’s the matter?”

“Hew’s a scawy pewson…” Her voice was muffled in between my shirt and her lips.

“You heard everything?”

“Yesh…”

“Then I guess that saves us the explanation.”

“But what a surprise, I didn’t know the noble family of Notos had three kids. What did he mean when he said you were a baby until yesterday by the way? Are you a naive person?”

“Ehm… Yeah… Exactly.”

I don’t think telling her is a good idea…

“What are we gonna do…?”

“Let’s just sleep for now.”

“Sleep…? Sleep?!”

“Yeah, you use the bed, I’ll sleep on the floor.”

“No, no, no, no, no. I’m the one who entered the castle without permission, I’ll sleep on the floor, no actually… I’ll sleep in the closet! if they happen to wake us up and see me in the bed I’ll be executed.”

“Why is this your most realistic scenario so far…?”

“Hehe…”

“I can’t let you sleep on the floor.”

“I can’t let you sleep on the floor!”

“Then we have a problem…”
