Chapter 14:
Magic lies carried me to the top, the summit where she is not.
If I take her and leave—the problems will only aggravate, but I can’t let Lloyd get what he wants. Something tells me staying is even worse… We can’t simply be obedient puppets and let his plans develop in the way he wants them to… Quick. Think! Should we run? The guards will definitively catch us… And she’s probably too scared to cast any spells…
“Is something wrong?” His annoying voice provided me with the answer I needed.
“There is actually, this maid is none other than my future wife, and you made her cry!”
“Are you sure this is how you want to play, Rey?” His grin disappeared from his face.
“Heh. How would one describe being sure?”
I grabbed Sofia, and ran.
“Don’t let them escape! She is another intruder!”
The guards all mobilized.
“There’s no time for being scared, Sofia! It’s now or never, cast a spell!” It’s no use… she’s paralyzed… “Breathe slowly. You got this, your cat is waiting for you at home right?”
“Mavros…” She snapped back to reality. Grabbing the piece of chalk in her pocket, writing as the guards chased us.
“That’s right, you have to make it back and tell him about your adventures at the King’s castle.”
“It’s done! You should be lighter now.”
The glitters are brighter than daylight, even while being chased they eased us and gave us the confidence necessary.
“For how long?”
“About a minute.”
“Do you know any attacking magic? Maybe a fireball or even better a wind charge?”
“I should be able to do any of the two… I’m not sure how strong they will be tho…”
“Then use the wind charge, I’ll jump and then you fire it for us to reach the top of the walls, got it?”
“Got it.”
“Then on the count of three.
1
2
3!”
I jumped above the guards with Sofia in arms, as they threw their spears at us, and before they could reach us, the glitters were spread through the air as the wind propelled us up and forward, tumbling the guards and their weapons down, reaching one of the towers of the wall. There were even more guards there, so I jumped again to the outsides of the castle, telling Sofia to cast the same spell again, mitigating the fall.
I ran until the spell gave out, and then we hid in an alley.
“Are you ok?”
“I feel my heart is about to give up…”
“Haha… then you’re alright.”
“What are we gonna do now?”
“We’ll have to leave the city.”
“Is your family gonna be alright?”
“I hope so, it seems Lloyd has a strong reason to marry my sister so I doubt he’ll throw everything out of the window just to make me pay.”
“Even so… He doesn’t seem like the rational type…”
“Yeah… But let’s worry about getting out of the city first. If you turn us both invisible how much time could you hold it?”
“I’ve never done it before so… less than 5 seconds.”
“Hummm… If possible I would like to avoid confrontation, I suppose killing a guard is not punishment free. What other spells do you have in your arsenal?”
“Uhm… Other than the derived from the basic elements… There’s the cleaning spell, there’s the no-hunger spell, there’s the no-sleep spell, there’s the sensorial enhancement spell, there’s the no sound spell, there’s the sleeping spell-”
“The last two. How do they work?”
“The no-sound spell creates a bubble around you that traps the sound inside and doesn’t permit the sound from the outside to enter. So it’s like creating a sound capsule to put it simply. And the sleeping spell, well… makes you sleepy.”
“Those sound useful, at what distance do you need to be to make someone sleepy, and how immediate is the effect?”
“Uhm… The effect depends on the will of the person to stay awake, the more tired someone is the more effective it is. The range… It was designed by mothers to sleep their children so… it’s just a couple of meters…”
“It works. If we use the sound capsule and get close enough for the spell to work, the only problem remaining is if the target is sleepy right?”
“Yes.”
“Then I like our chances. Let’s wait until night.”
———————————————————————————————
I’m sorry Sara, you’ll have to wait a bit longer.
Lights are off, stars are bright, the night has started.
We moved from alley to alley until finally reaching the entrance (or in our case the exit) of the city, the walls are even taller than the castle’s, and security is not as tight, apparently all has gone to the castle. The King must be paranoid, not everyday do you find three intruders in your home.
Sofia hid in a barrel, and I pushed it with just enough force for it to roll and stop in front of one of the guards. He bent down to check the barrel but he collapsed, then the other guard got close to check on his comrade.
But he didn’t sleep like him.
I used the opportunity to pass through the gate, and then Sofia removed the spell on me. I made noise for the guard to come search for me, and while he did, Sofia turned invisible, got out of the barrel, and successfully passed through.
He became cautious, inspecting the surroundings, and about to find me, the sleeping spell finally took effect.
He collapsed—
And we went deep into the night, bringing our escape to its conclusion.
“I can’t believe we did it!” She started hopping.
“What did you expect? We are a nice combo.”
“Hehe… Yeah.”
“And your nerve control is also getting better.”
She stopped in front of me and replied: “What did you expect? We are a nice combo after all.”
“Hahaha, indeed we are.”
“By the way… What you said earlier on the castle… did you mean it?”
