Our first mission

When we entered the guild, I could see the real fantasy setting, a lot of guys with armors, bows, lances, swords, axes, guys of different sizes and complexions, women with full armors or light armors, but it wasn’t as big as I thought, there were only around 4 or 3 parties.

This was the scene of my dreams in videogames coming true, but this was now my reality.

“Come on, Ryu, don’t stand there!”

Elizabeth was pulling my arm and dragging me to the reception table. There was a girl dressed as a waitress, she made a bow and smiled at us.

“Welcome to the guild, my name is Evelyn, how can I help you?”

“I am Ryuzaki Hikari, I wanted to sign up as an adventurer”

“I am Elizabeth Roselia, I want to be one too”

“My, a couple wanting to go into adventures,

“We are not actually a couple”

“We are good friends”

We both nodded and the receptionist laughed a bit, she extended his hand and pointed at the bulletin board.

“You can look at the missions right there, ones you probe that you are able to complete at least five of them, we can have you as an official adventurer”

“I thought anybody could be an adventurer” —I said.

“In realty, yeah, but If you want to get rewards, we need someone who is worth our services”

“Services?” —Elizabeth asked.

“You haven’t heard about our services? My, you two really wanted to go into adventures if you didn’t know about that, or maybe you only wanted the rewards…, we offer a lot of benefits ones you sign up with us, while we are a small city, we still share information to wider cities”

“And what are these benefits?” —I asked.

“Life insurance, if you die or get involved into a serious injury, we can help you recover or even help you with a prosthesis if available, discounts, and we even have a ranking were the best of the guild get to meet the king and joined their forces or get bigger rewards”

“The king, huh?... so being an adventurer is a job than to pass time”

“Yeah, some of them do quest from time to time when they need money but those are rare cases, the majority join in to stay in this position although some of them only chase the money but as soon as they get it goes away… we have more benefits, I will give you a list when you choose your mission”

“Thanks!”

We both thanked the receptionist and went to the bulletin board.

“Missions… quest… hum…; we only need to prove that we are here because we want to be and not for interest”

“Your family already has business, so money is not the problem… as for me, I do need it”

“You do? You want to go back to your town?”

“I wish I could… to visit them but…”

“Sorry… if you don’t want to talk about is okay, let’s look at the quest”

As soon as I got my face down Elizabeth cheered me up, I smiled and looked at the quest that was available.

Bringing back my ring, slay the slimes from near town, an unknown creature is making noises in the forest, find my son that was missing in a cave, HIRE ME NOW, PLEASE, I WILL CHARGE YOUR STUFF… I better ignore that…

And as soon as I was about to look at the others, a dude in big armor and an axe behind his back approached us.

“You two! Are you searching for a new comrade?! I can be your new teammate! My name is-“

“Sorry, we are not interest” —I said

“B-But you-“

“We are not looking for new party members, sorry…” —Elizabeth said.

“But I can be a good companion! I know how to fight! I know how to charge stuff!”

“WE SAID NO!”

Both of us rejected the guy in the armor and he looked down and went away slowly.

“This is probably him”

I pointed at the poster.

“I feel bad for him…”

“Don’t, is better to reject him that way before he gets annoying”

“I can charge, tank, defeat monsters and make you tea? Was it this?” —Elizabeth laughed a bit.

“Don’t ever think about it, we don’t do charity”

“We did help you though, jealous?”

“Is better to not let this type of people in here, we don’t even know him, maybe he wants something from us”

“Don’t let your experience let you in this case, Ryu, he is just excited… but I don’t want to add him to our party, we are just getting started, and I want to experience this with you”

“Elizabeth…”

We looked into each other and the receptionist stepped with a paper in his mouth looking away.

“Umhum! Sorry… Here is the paper with the benefits, have you two decided your mission?”

“Yeah, we will go with this one”

Elizabeth took one of the papers in the bulletin board, it was for slaying slimes.

“Perfect! Here is one bag, ones you defeat the slimes make sure to put their core in here”

“Slimes have cores?”

“You’ll see”

The receptionist was about to leave but she pointed out the guy and whispered to us.

“Don’t let him bother you, he is just searching for a new party, he got kicked out a lot of times since he was too annoying for their party, don’t be too rude with him”

“We understand, thank you”

We step outside with our morals up and we look at the paper one more time.

“Near the woods of the city, isn’t there where I trained?”

“I think it is before we entered the whole forest, look, it said that they are causing problems for carriages since they keep pumping into them”

“Why hasn't anyone taken care of them though?”

“Maybe they go for higher missions… or maybe they move from town… you saw the guild, right? They weren’t many people, just that guy and some of them were just eating, since it is a guild but it is also an inn”

“You are right… well, let’s take care of this, maybe we can make a deal with some of the drivers”

“Yeah!”

We walked towards a carriage that was about to go and speak with him.

“Excuse me… sir!”

“What is it, you two?... Adventurers?”

“We are just entering the path, sir can you do us a favor? Can you help us reach the slimes? I know they have been bothering the path for all of you”

“Oh, you taking care of those filthy globes? For sure, sit down and I will drop you when I get close”

“Thanks!”

We both thanked the driver and got into his carriage; we were into it for almost an hour when the carriage stopped.

“It is here, make sure to take care of them or I will charge for the travel when I saw you”

“No worries, sir!”

The carriage didn’t move but we did, we were facing slimes in a great mass.

“I thought they were just a couple”

“They reproduce fast, Ryu, come on”

We ran into the slimes and shouted at them, Elizabeth was the first one in taking care of one of them, at the moment she slayed him, the slime exploded leaving a small piece, their core. I took out my sword and kept my distance from the slimes, they weren’t dumb, they did attack in groups, they had no mouth, or spines, but when they attacked it was a strong push.

It took us all the day until the sun was about to set in again to slay all the slimes, we ended up leaning on our backs as we caught our breath, drinking water and eating something, our armors were covered in slime and we took them off to eat.

“There were a lot… I can’t believe it took us all day” —I said.

“We have plenty of cores thought, I am sure the guild lady would be amazed by it, even though these are weak enemies”

“Weak or no, we did our first mission, it would take us a lot of time if we returned by foot though… you want to set up a campfire?”

“Sure, this will be the first time I sleep outside home, let’s get into the woods!”

Elizabeth took our equipment and the bag that was full of cores of smiles, small pieces that were like crystal shards from any game, they had different colors depending on the color of slime since they were from a lot of colors.

When we got into the woods, we set up the fire and took our sleeping bags out, we talked a bit while looking at the stars and then we fell asleep, throwing a bit of water on the fire before we went to sleep.

Our mission was complete and we only needed to deliver the items, but this was just the beginning.
