Chapter 24:
Isekai.exe: Echoes of Eden
"Why are you crying?"
"My parents. I can't remember them"
"Weak. My parents are superheroes. I am a big kid. I can wait for them while they are off saving the world"
"I miss them"
"How can you miss what you can't remember?"
"It's like, something should be there, but it isn't. Like a hole in your chest and instead of your heart, you have a worm eating and making the hole bigger"
"I don't understand you. You're weird"
"That doesn't mean I'm weird, it means you're stupid!"
"Oh yeah?! Well at least my parents will come back!"
"Don't be so sure about that"
I flicked my head and groaned in pain. I seriously needed to stop being saved or saving people by wrestling them. It didn't need too much brain power but it hurt like hell and to top it all off, I kept losing miserably! Fett didn't look like he wanted to thank me for saving him, he looked livid.
"What do you remember?" He roared like a wild animal and I could lie but then I would have to be smart about lying and I didn't really count on myself to do that.
"All of it" He clenched his fists and gritted his teeth like he wanted to bite me. Either I was so delicious that everyone around me wanted to eat me or I was super annoying, which was not a possibility so we were going with the first one. I lifted my arms placatingly. "But you also remember stuff, don't you?" He looked confused.
"So that part-?" His expression almost turned horrified.
"All true" I replied with a furrow in my brow. I couldn't tell when I figured out there was something wrong in my head in this world but it was accepted as a general truth in my subconscious. Stuff were missing, something usual and normal for dreams but was this even a dream.
"I'm sorry" He said awkwardly and I would have teased him had I not noticed the faint glow coming from his chest. A glow much similar to the one still emitting from Nax. Anyone who managed to get out of the nightmare glowed. And the wall right behind Fett didn't look exactly like the definition of a wall. The surface was smooth and shining like a...okay, I shouldn't be surprised anymore. It was a mirror. Or a mirror-like wall. All of these somehow connected of course. And we would have to help the others before we figured out what was going on with the glowing part and the mirrors. I was seriously starting to get tired of those.
"Now let's go save our damsel-" I puffed my chest out and got ready to go and help Toliz when she gasped as if coming to the surface for air and she smiled at us as if nothing was amiss. I stumbled on my too eager feet and face planted. She chuckled. It was empty. I looked up in concern. Her eyes were haunted. Oh no, what had this place make her see? I smiled goofily and tried to take her mind away from whatever it was. I noticed the glow she was emitting. "Did I mention you're absolutely shining today?" She looked down at herself and then looked away. I couldn't tell if her blush was my wishful thinking but then her glow got rose tinted and I took that as a sign. My ego could take a win, even a small one. It had taken as much a beating as the rest of my body.
I opened my mouth to say another very smart thing, I assure you, but then I noticed that with the way she moved, the glow reflected on the mirror wall and ended up as a ray hitting another part of the opposite wall. It got me thinking. I smirked. I could swear Fett groaned in defeat, Nax huffed and Toliz took in a sharp breath at my creepiness. I laughed like a petty, childish villain.
"I have a plan" And seeing as nobody else did, they knew they had to go with mine.
So, do you know that game with a Fireboy and a Watergirl? No? Me neither. Video games were a big no-no in my house, remember? But for some reason, I had some knowledge about this one. Maybe I had heard about it at school or it came up as an ad somewhere. I didn't know but it was intriguing and if it worked now, it was going to be my lifesaver. So there is this boy made out of flame and this girl made out water. They are basically trapped in many different temples where they have to solve puzzles related to the theme of the temple in order to go further. This was the basic idea anyway. In one of the versions of the game, there was a Light Temple and you had to move rocks around and reflecting surfaces in order to get the sunrays to hit the right spot and unlock levers and doors. What if this was something similar but the pawns were my team members? In that case, we would need the trio to be glowing as well so since Toliz had managed to save herself, maybe we should go and help them. Though for some reason, I felt an aura that demanded I kept away from them.
"So, did you know Artiel cries like a...?" Toliz's eyes turned menacing and Fett made a noise as if he had just swallowed his tongue. He had meant to break the ice by making fun of me but he was about do so by calling me a derogatory girl to the actual girl of the group. I snickered. I had never actually seen someone dig their own graves so efficiently and quickly. I gave him a look like You made your bed, go lay in it but then we were interrupted by the two girls from the trio awakening. Their glows were somehow weaker but it still worked. We now had to wait for DemonLord456 to wake up which didn't take long but the fact that he was last wasn't something I was so ready to leave be just yet.
"I knew you would be stuck looking at your own reflection" I joked. He looked affronted. His glow was the weakest.
"We were stuck in nightmares, asshole" He cursed. I gasped and turned to look at the others.
"So you were stuck looking at him too?!"
It was admittedly harder to get him to follow my instructions after that but I felt like my life was so much better just by seeing his expression of utter fury. Once everyone was in the right position and their beams met at the centre of the room, the sky light opened up and I had to check it wasn't a reflection and we didn't end up on our butts once again. That shattered glass sky wasn't the best but it was better than nothing. I was starting to get claustrophobic.
"You know, this is the third time I save your guys' asses and without those awful stones you call....weapons" My arrogance got the better of me, I will admit. The trio looked at me menacingly and they pointed all weapons I had just insulted, to my head. I laughed nervously. "We can-"
I felt the actual cold touch of death grip my shoulders. My breath came out like freezing smoke and my heart stopped beating for a second before it kickstarted as if it was running a marathon. I heard the flutter of heavy wings. When I looked up, I saw angels.
