Chapter 13:

Chapter 13 - Name

Irregular Hero: Spirit Tamer Doesn't Want to Lose (異常勇者シリーズ: 精霊テイマーは失いたくない)

Note: A short breather chap of 600 words

“So, what will we call this kid?” Yumemi suddenly pondered when we’re about to depart on hunting.

“Hmm? Ah, right…”

[Inari Fox A - Level 1]

I checked the details for its gender.

[Gender: Male]

“We can’t let him stay as Inari Fox A forever,” I continued.

“Let’s think of a name!” Yumemi said cheerfully.

“Kyaun?” Inari Fox whimpered curiously.

Yumemi hasn’t acquired the skill yet after all, so her words won’t be converted to Fox language. She’s a fast learner, so I think she will probably reach level 2 before I do.

Did she get passive of [Fast Learner] or something?

“This little guy is a male, but which pattern will we go with? Strong and cool, or cute and fitting?”

“Cute and fitting!” Yumemi quickly responded.

“Yeah, couldn’t agree more.”

You shall not name your pet with strong names because it will end up sounding edgy and give bad first impressions to those who want to befriend them.

Imagine us meeting with another [Irregular] and we are introducing a monster as a party member, a cute and fitting name would be easier to befriend right?

“Let’s see… How about Un-chan? From the idiom the breath of A-Un.”

“Yuu-kun, isn’t that just because Un is the Japanese word for Luck? And the kanji from the breath of A-Un is nowhere close to representing Luck.”

That’s why I tried to use katakana, but she got a great point that I can’t even defend myself.

I was unaware of that fact, but I think there was a time where I thought about what would be a good name for Lucky’s companion if we get another dog, and I remember my dad suggested Un from the breath of A-Un, meaning that no words needed for the two to understand.

“Besides, it has no meaning if there’s no A in the first place,” she continued.

Yeah, I just realized that too while remembering the meaning of the idiom. We both can’t be called A in the first place with our names.

“Alright, let’s go simple and use Kon. It’s cute and how we Japanese describe how foxes cry.”

“... Yuu-kun, this kid cries Kyaun, remember?”

“I… forgot about that, but isn’t that fine anyway? We’re looking for a cute and fitting name, not matching how he really cries after all.”

“... Kon-chan… true, that sounds nice.”

“Alright, Kon it is.”

I crouched down in front of the baby fox, and introduced myself.

“I am Yu-U-Ma.”

“Ah, I’m Yu-Me-Mi!” Yumemi joined me.

“Kyaun?”

We both pointed at the baby fox.

“And you are Kon!” “And you are Kon-chan!”

“Kayun…? Kun! Kyaun!”

It seems to be liking the name we gave it.

[Inari Fox A. Name Changed: Kon]

[Kon - Level 1]

[Race: Inari Fox]
[Gender: Male]

My system acknowledged the name, and readjust how it displays Kon and its details.

“Ah, I got [Foxlingual],” Yumemi reported her notification.

Just by talking for a little bit to Kon in Japanese? Isn’t that kinda cheating!? Imitating how Kon cried while being heard by you was embarrassing, you know!?

But well… I won’t put that in my mouth and ruin the atmosphere.

Come to think of it… no [Irregular] came here after our shouts…

Does that mean there are no other [Irregular] here?

Or maybe… are they killed by monsters?

If Yumemi’s only safe because she’s spawned in the path full of slimes… the people who spawned in the path filled with strong monsters perhaps…

Even me too… was just lucky to find the safe zone quick enough.

I wish there were other good lucky [Irregular] out there, still alive.

“Alright, you two. Ready to go?”

“Yes!”

“Kyaun!”
