Chapter 6:

It's raining what?

Dragon's Laud

The moonlight soaks into the rocky ground. Cliffs cast pitch black shadows here and there. The tall pine tree tops sway in the breeze.

"It's cold up on this mountain." I say out loud and I really hope only to myself. "Sonja's house has to be around here somewhere. I don't think I ran that far from it."

I keep searching for what feels like an eternity. No faint glows from windows can be seen close by. I see them on other mountain sides but I know I did not run that far. I don't even know where Maddie is anymore. Maybe I shouldn't have walked off.

I let out a sigh. With my glorified stick tree I crawl under a pine tree to escape the wind. It's pokey but I bury myself in the pine needles to stay warm. Then I drift off to sleep with the sounds of the wind blowing through the trees.

Snapping of a twig wakes me up. Thankfully I did not jerk awake because a long green lizard was walking the trail I was on last night. Not a small lizard, it has to be 12 meters long at least. Many of it's features where like Maddie's. It had horns, scales, claws, same snout shape and long tail. Only real difference was this one had a longer body, shorter legs and no wings. Could it be a dragon?

I wait for it to pass and then wait some more because glory stick wouldn't help me one bit in that fight.

Eventually I crawl out from under the pine tree and head in the opposite direction the lizard went.

I walk for awhile looking for signs of human life on the mountain I was on. Sadly I was not having luck. Maybe if I get to higher ground I can see better. So I turn myself toward the peak. I then regret it because the sun blinds me making me loose my balance and tumble down the mountain hitting every hard rock there was on the way. I finally stop when glory stick gets hung up between two trees.

"Ow." I whimper standing myself back up on my legs. Then I rub the many sore spots that were still developing all over me.

The sound of big flapping wings bounces off the trees and cliffs to the point I have no idea where the sound is coming from outside of up. I look up and spin around looking for what's above me.

I duck into the side of the pine tree when I see it's a huge black dragon flying overhead. It is leading maybe 25 smaller dragons someplace. I'm able to make out people riding on the backs of a few of them. Then something falls from the flying pack.

It almost looks like a thin cloth but it's falling much too fast for it to be cloth. The closer it gets the more I see it's not moving like a piece of cloth but a small lizard shaped creature. It bounces off tree limbs and toward the rocks beneath. Luckily I dive just in time to break it's fall. My back screams from the rocks digging through my school uniform.

The little blue lizard was also similar to Maddie. Maybe it was a wingless dragon like that green one I saw earlier? But the tip of it's tail has a fin and the ridge on its back looks fin like with spikes. It's claws also have webbing between them. One of his horns is broken off. I look over the dragon at its cuts and bruises. Behind it's fin like cheeks I see gills.

"He's suffocating! I need to find water." I bolt up cradling him in my arms. Grabbing glory stick I start running. Water. Water. Where would water be? Water flows down hill, there is a good chance if I go down I will find water. I more slid down the side of the mountain than anything but I made it to a river.

The water was rushing very fast since most of the river was at around a 45 degree angle. I scan the area for a slower spot that would be easier to hold him in the water without him slipping away. Up stream a little ways I see a downed tree making a small pool of calmer water behind it. I sprint up to the rocky rivers edge, dropping to my knees I plunge this dragon into the cold water.

Slowly the dragon starts to move, starting with it's tail then it's arms soon enough it thrashes from my hands and jumps from the water and lands on the rocks beside me.

"Gross! Fresh water." The dragon says in a nasally child voice.

I fall back on my backside in shock from him talking.

"You talk?!" I gasp.

"You talk?" The dragon sarcastically mocks back. "Everything talks human."

"I-I um w-well." I try explaining my situation but this dragon shows no mercy.

"I. Um. Duuuh." The dragon snarks back with an attitude. "Leave me alone human. Your kind suck."

It tries walking off just to fall on its side.

"Wait, can you breath air? Let me help you into the water." I tell him.

"That's fresh water. Yea I can breath on land and in there but it tastes gross! I'm going to find the ocean where I can heal better. Then, I will get my revenge." He states struggling to get back up.

"Revenge?" I ask in fear. I tried saving him. I didn't know he was a salt water creature not fresh water. I get ready to beg for my life.

"Revenge against the one that killed my family. Tundra, you have not seen the last of me. I will take you down." He states with authority. His legs are shaky but he stands on all fours. He takes a step back toward the stream. Maybe I should r-"

I catch him before he falls over. "What should I do?" I ask.

"Just... get me to the water." He says reluctantly.

I gently carry the dragon to the calmer waters edge and he plops back into the pool of water. I see him cling to a rock and close his eyes.

So this guy has a grudge against Tundra and that Gilton guy too. My rumbling tummy stops my thought process of everyone wanting revenge. Looking for food would be ideal but if this dragon looses his grip there is a very good chance he will be lost in the stream for good.

I sit and wait for awhile. Soon the little dragon emerges from the stream.

"Why are you still here?" He asks.

"I want to make sure you're feeling better." I say.

The dragon looks taken aback. Then he ponders for a minute.

"Are you doing anything right now?" He asks.

"Outside of being really hungry, I'm looking for a girl's shack that I ran away from last night." I state.

This dragon gives me thee most skeptical look I have ever seen then it sighs. "Would you help me reach the ocean and in return we can look for this girl's place?"

"That sounds good." I say as my stomach growls.

"Tsk. Those berries and nuts are edible for humans. After that, head in that direction and the ocean isn't too far." He uses his tail to point in the directions the dragons flew from.

"Thank you." I say bowing my head a little.

That was not the last skeptical look that dragon gave me either on the journey to the ocean. Everytime I reached for berries or nuts he would either be silent or let out a tsk. Or if I questioned which way would be easier crossing a river or ridge he would look at me funny like I should know the answer already. Every river we went to he jumped in and looked for fish to eat. He would also randomly tell me to hide in bushes and we would wait for a tiger like or deer like creature to pass.

Night falls and we haven't reached the ocean yet. I made a fire this time in a small clearing with dry twigs I found from under trees. I'm happy I have my dad's lighter with me. I hope him and mom are watching over me even though I'm no where near home.

The little dragon starts whimpering in his sleep. Then he starts to kick and thrash a little. "Mom... dad.... brother..." his little face is all twisted in a snarl of anger.

When Tasha would get this way Potato would curl up with her. I lay down beside him and gently place my hand on his side. His face slowly looks more peaceful.
