Chapter 30:
Burning Phoenix
He awoke.
His eyes breaking free from its prison, he saw a world of white. Placing his hand on his chest, he felt the fabric of his shirt as he blinked twice.
—Is this a dream?
Springing himself up, his boots settled firm on … a white floor built from nothing. Feeling as if he was stepping on marble, it looked like he levitated, while his body quaked the more he …
Saw more endless white.
“Hello! Anyone!?”
Cupping his hands between his mouth, he pushed the accumulated air from within his throat, echoing through the infinite horizon. Repeatedly hearing the shambles of his own voice, like a ramble of dark memories, he felt like an anvil of despair mounted on his back.
—This is just a dream … this is just a dream … I just need to wake up …
Taking the first lunge forward, he forced his body to step out from his petrified quaking. Not looking back, he continued to walk, followed by his breathing returning back to its original—
Live…
He stopped.
Slowly turning his head, every follicle of skin goosed out into miniscule bumps like the plague. Just a few feet behind him, his eyes trailed the figure of a woman with dark brown hair, who had pale skin and pointed ears…
“Mom?”
Remembering her silicon face, he took a couple steps back as tears built up within his lower eyelids. His arms down to his sides, he was just about to take another step…
Something tapped his shoulder.
Twisting his head 180, he saw another figure, one with white fur and bunny ears. Along with having black beady eyes, the man widened his eyes and dropped his jaw.
“H-Huh?”
And next to the bunny-human was another beast-human, whose neck stretched out in height. Having horse ears, and dark brown eyes and hair, the man had no recollection of his face …
As if he forgot his existence, like lost media.
“R-Ryan and … w-who are you …?”
Taking another batch of steps back, his face began to turn pale. Scrunching his eyes, which blocked his vision, he bumped into another figure. Jumping out of shock, his body let out a shriveled shiver.
Turning around a last time, he saw a girl taller than most women. Having green eyes and dark brown hair, the young man started to let the tears flow out from the corners of his eyes.
Buckling his knees, he put his hands to his ears, and squeezed his face and cheeks as if he was praying. All the while they stared at him.
—Please wake me up! Please wake me up! Get up! Get up! Don’t make me remember! Don’t make me remember! Don’t—
Get up Luke…
He heard that voice.
Lifting his head, with his hands still wedged on his ears, his eyes opened to see one last individual walking toward him. A single woman looked down on him, making him shed out a single last tear from his right eye. Forcing his body to stand, she stood in front of him, as he traced her cheeks…
No matter what, never give up.
Which were flustered with freckles.
“You promised.”
The world then started to shimmer into nothing, the white of nothingness turning into the nothing of nothingness.
“You promised…”
