Chapter 1:

Here She Comes

Dreambound

A merchant wearing a straw hat, easily in his 40s, struggled getting his entire shipment onto his cart. A new territory has been added to Arithmia's border and so he packed his goods into wooden boxes and rushed to the new land. At least that was his plan. But he overestimated his cart's capacity. No matter how he tried to pack them, they wouldn't fit.

-What are we going to do now Waldo?

-Woof.

-That's what I thought...

Waldo was his golden retriever, and his cargo dog. Easily the size of his owner and twice the weight, yet fluffy and playful as a pup, which he was. Dogs in Arithmia averaged 3 meters and were an inseparable element of its culture. Buildings were build with dogs in mind, big wide doors, a lot of space between furniture.

-Woof, woof!

-What's up buddy?

Unknown girl with blond curls, wearing a blue cardigan and an over the shoulder bag was petting Waldo and he seemed to like enjoy it.

-AWW, who's a good boy? Aren't you just the cutest thing? Yes you are!

An audible smack sound was heard. A boy with slicked-back blond hair and glasses seemed rather unamused with his companion violating Waldo's personal space.

-Lucy I beg you, stop touching people's dogs, especially without asking.

-May I pet your dog sir?

-Uhm, sure, he seems to like it.

Planck needed to do something with the awkwardness, so he followed up with a casual question.

-Are you going to d'Algebria sir?

-Planned to, hoped to get some quick coin, but it seems I'll have to leave some of my goods behind. They just don't want to fit.

Suddenly petting stopped and Lucy emerged from behind Waldo, her hair also being blonde made it seem as if she emerged from within him.

-How many boxes you have sir?

Lucy couldn't ignore someone in dire need assistance, as she and Planck needed to get to a certain settlement next to a river, and declining to pay off your debts brought shame on you and your family if the word got out. And she would make sure the word gets out.

***

-This is where we get off Planck! Thanks again for the ride mister! And thank you Waldo.

-Woof.

-No problem miss, a deal is a deal. Still, I can't believe THIS is the best way to stack 17 boxes!

-Wait till I show you optimal packaging for 10...

Lucy put her hand into her tool bag.

-Here!

-... I'm not sure if I'm impressed or scared.

-Be both!

-Lucy please stop harassing the merchants with your boxes. People might start calling you a maniac.

Planck was there mostly for moral support. Occasionally to remind her of something or help think things through. Ever since she came to this world she's been treating him like her younger brother. He also doesn't really like touching dogs. He thinks they smell.

-Better a maniac than - oh look!

Quite ironically Arithmia didn't have many mathematicians. So Lucy had her hands quite full everyday. Today was no different. She was asked to help with land disputes in the newly conquered territory. As per usual, people were wondering how come there was water in the floodplains. And when the tides fell, boundaries were gone. It was hard to claim someone else's building after the flood, albeit there were a few attempts, but people were mostly fighting about trees.

-People live like that?

Planck was a clean freak. Eyes full of horror whenever someone would eat with their hands. Mud left by the high tides made him question the sanity of his fellow humans.

-Well, it seems you'll do just fine by yourself Lucy! I'll go arrange a way ba—

-Look! The old man!

Lucy happily exclaimed as she grabbed Planck by his collar and started dragging him through the mud.

-NO! I YIELD!

His screams gathered attention of folk around, including an elder man wearing a Toga-like attire.

-Here she comes... Lucy!

-How are we doing today Mr Propor?

-MY PANTS! COVERED IN MUD!

-Good to see you too Planck. Land disputes are no fun to work on. Someone allegedly tried to move their boundary marker in the middle of the night.

-That's criminal!

-That's smart.

-That's why we called you, we need you to find immovable points to use as markers and draw the boundary lines anew.

-I got just the thing...

Girl's grey glove grabbed a rope too big to fit in her bag. She's always looking away whenever she's using her special tool bag, as if letting its magic find the right item for her.

-100 royal cubits long rope! Knots spaced every cubit...

-If you keep staring at it with stars in your eyes you'll burn it.
