Chapter 5:

Diagnostics testing

Our Town in another world

The sky began to lighten as Muki sat in her car staring at infographics and camera footage on her tablet. "First thing's first, I gotta diagnose everything. Those elves were killing people along with the goblins, suggesting their supposed goodwill might be an act. She's clearly hiding things from us, and not just her misdeeds. The footage I saw showed her severing a girl's finger, presumably to use to unlock the phone. That means that the time we saw her unlock it, she must have used some kind of spell to throw off our senses. Question is how it works. It didn't effect the cameras, but that could be for a multitude of reasons. The only certain thing is that Ikebukuro's smart, and smart is the worst we can deal with. For now, I need to check the state of everything else in the town," she thought as she zeroed in on a sector at the town's eastern edge.

This was the town's farmland district. It was known for producing fine resources for the country, but was never considered essential should the nation suddenly be stricken with a food crisis. Now, it was more than vital.

"There's no telling what soil's like in this world, or how it'll effect the soil that came with our town. We gotta assume our resources are all we have, and refrain from venturing out too far until we have more knowledge. Time isn't on our side though. Those goblins were on us in seconds, probably due to them being in the vicinity of the town's summoning. Those elves too. I wonder if there's more."

She then shifted to footage from the north end, which showed Aoi and Rosa walking.

"Those two... They're from the next town over, but they were here. And what's that forest out-"

But the camera feed cut out, likely an effect of the wombatbat's energy ball. Yet with no footage of said creature on tape, Muki would be left in the dark for the time being, which given the situation, was not where she wanted to be.

"Tch, looks like something messed with the camera, but it wasn't destroyed. The feed seems natural 3 minutes on, but 3 minutes down, a lot can happen. I'll keep an eye on that one."

Next was footage from the West side of town. This was where many of the gangs were centered. Goblins had also attacked this area, but with their more advanced weaponry on hand, the gangs had managed to take down the goblins with minimal losses.

"Ah, looks like Yotsuba survived. Dammit, I hate that guy," Muki groaned as she zoomed in on an effeminate young man with shoulder-length strawberry blonde hair and baggy clothing.

Next came some footage from a more central part of the city with Kirikatta fully onscreen murdering goblin and human alike, but mostly humans.

"Another one. And now that I think about it, her clothes are similar to ours. In fact, they'd fit right in with us if they walked around town clothing wise. Could just be a coincidence why their clothes are like that. Fantasy style can derive from modern fashion sometimes. Or is there more? The elf here looks to be more troublesome in a different way than Ikebukuro. She's so fast, there's times the feed can't pick her up. Just hope she isn't smart or insane."

Footage then came up of Monika entering the salon.  Muki rolled her eyes as she watched Monika attempt to shave her head, only to get knocked out on the spot by a stylist with short brown hair tied up in a ponytail.

"Good thing Jenna's on top of things. Monika's the biggest pain in my ass in this whole town. Always making scenes in hopes of tripping me up. Scenes..."

Thoughts of Yamane flooded into Muki's head as she scowled and began making a series of phone calls. "Gonna have to wait on taking care of the town. First I gotta take care of myself and Yamane."

The dial tone rang for a bit before an angry Machiko picked up. "And you have something to say, young lady!?"

"How's Yamane?"

"SHE- Ahem, she's doing just fine. Needs rest."

"How do you wanna handle PR?"

Machiko clicked her tongue. "How else? By telling all about our saviors and how they saved Yamane."

"Got it, thanks."

"Don't just-"

But Muki hung up, zero fucks given. "So she's gonna be an obstacle. Pain in the ass. That means Monika's gotta be handled first," she thought as she made another call.

...

At the salon, the stylist scowled as she gazed down at the unconscious Monika and the clippers on the ground. Monika had only managed to buzz off a few strands of her hair before the town was whisked away to another world. She had then conked out, or rather been knocked out by the stylist, who had decided to keep her cooped up for the night. In terms of looks, the damage was minimal and could even be covered simply by restyling Monika's hair, but whether or not that would be a thing all depended on the stylist.

Tilting her head towards the far corner of the room, the stylist stared blankly for a bit before nodding and turning back around, picking the clippers up off the ground. "Fall asleep in a salon? Don't be upset if you wake up bald," she grumbled as she began shearing Monika.

Luscious crimson hair plummeted to the floor as the clippers whirred, yet Monika's eyes didn't open. That didn't mean she was truly out though.

"Yes, shave it all off. That's the main step towards exposing you all as the monsters you are," she thought.

Once her head and eyebrows were buzzed and lathered with shaving cream, Monika finally decided to open her eyes. "Ngh, huh? Oh, look at that, you actually decided to shave me," she proudly huffed."

"I felt like it, "Sleeping Beauty". Now once you're bald, get out."

"And what if I want a beauty pack next?"

"You trespassed."

"Did I?"

"Forget it, just watch the news," the stylist snarled as she turned on the TV.

"No, I'd rather see what you're doing to my wonderful self."

"It's important. Our town's been transported to another world."

Monika shot the stylist an unamused glare, but decided to humor her slightly by taking a look at the TV screen. Images of widespread destruction from the goblins was shown, along with a blurb saying that Yamane had been attacked, but survived thanks to the aid of two saviors.

"And you really think this'll convince me? Please. I know your mistress well enough to know she's known for this bullshit."

The stylist's eyes narrowed. "I have no mistress."

"Sure, sure... You're just some "no name stylist" who's totally not using this place as a front to microchip people and turn them into mindless slaves. So what's really going on?"

"I don't know. Watch the news."

"Don't believe it."

"Then who would you believe?"

"From the family, only Yamane."

The stylist stopped shaving and held her head low. "I- I heard that she was violently attacked last night, seemingly by goblins."

"How is she!?"

"Alive, but in critical condition."

"Details?"

"That kind of information doesn't just flow freely through salons."

Monika scowled and returned her focus to herself in the mirror. "Maybe you're just incompetent. I'm starting to see blood trickling from my head."

"How so? You broke the rules, so don't expect a premium service. And did you not want to know more about the girl's condition? Now you've got an excuse to go there. The address is..."

Monika clicked her tongue and stormed out immediately once her shave was complete, not even bothering to pay a cent, or leave any form of payment behind.

"Must madam always do things so roundabout? But I guess there is reason given what's happened," the stylist thought as she began to head out herself.
