Chapter 3:
Becoming "The Hero" To Save This Beautiful World
As Rin lay in his bed trying to fall asleep, his thoughts constantly spiraled to the argument he had started. Being reminded of everything that's happened so far and their hopeless situation when he finally found a glimmer of hope, all of his suppressed emotions hit him at once, not allowing him to think straight, and instead he let his emotions control him. That's why now, after having some time away from everyone and seeing his actions clearly, he kept deprecating himself. He was not too dissatisfied with his life in the new world, but he knew that his friends might not have been as happy about it. That's why he was hoping someone would extend a helping hand. However, the moment somebody did it, he just behaved like a spoiled child, he let his guard down and let whatever was bottled in him boil over.
- (Why am I always so emotional for no reason? I always lose my temper in stressful situations like this, and by trying to protect everyone I care about, even if needlessly, I end up making a mess. I should apologize to Elia when I get the chance. Hopefully she will forgive me. ... Maybe I should even consider helping her out. After all, even if she could learn this spell quickly, it still would likely take some time, so sitting around would just be a waste.) - He paused in his mind, blankly staring at the night sky through the window. - (Come to think of it. Her voice didn't sound similar to the one we heard when we were in this voidless space.) - He again paused to focus on that thought. - (Maybe I should ask Elia if she knows what that place was and whether she spoke to us back then or not.) - With that Rin decided that tomorrow he'll try to get in contact with Elia, apologize, and ask more questions.
In that moment the door to his room opened slowly, allowing a little bit of the light from the lights in the corridor to enter his room. Rin tried to stay as still as possible, pretending to be asleep, wondering who was peeking at him at this hour. After an awkward moment, the door slowly closed again, letting Rin relax. With his body relaxing came the intense feeling of exhaustion, putting him to sleep without letting him process the situation that just occurred.
In the morning, Rin woke up and spent some time lying in bed, after which he got up, changed clothes, and decided to go get something to eat for breakfast. Oddly enough, he didn't meet anyone on his way nor when he was in the kitchen area. After the breakfast he decided to head to girls' room to see if they are there and to apologize to them about yesterday. As he arrived in front of their door, he hesitated for a moment. Ultimately he opened the door, and when he noticed who was waiting in the room, he got positively shocked. It was Suzume and Mitsuki together with Elia. He was happy that he had no need to look for her, but also he started feeling uneasy as he was face-to-face with a person he scolded, the person he promised himself he would want to apologize to the most, and yet in that moment he couldn't utter a word.
- Good morning Rin. - coldly said Mitsuki.
- How are you today? Did you sleep well? Did you eat breakfast already? - Suzume pestered him with questions in her sweet yet calm tone.
- G-good morning. - answered shortly, Rin.
Elia sat in the room quietly the entire time with a downcast expression. The atmosphere became tense yet again, just like the day earlier. This time, however, Suzune started mediating on Elia's behalf and focused everyone's attention mostly on herself.
- Now that we're all here I'll start. Yesterday I promised that I would help Elia with conveying anything she would struggle with I will also try to stay neutral but I will make sure today there won't be any arguments again. - said Suzune in a calm and very stern voice.
- Y-yes, thank you. As for myself I simply want to continue our conversation and explain everything I didn't get the chance to. After that I won't be asking for anything and will listen to any request. - added Elia in a bit of a weaker voice than Suzune.
- With that out of the way, are there any questions before we begin? - continued Suzune.
Mitsuki and Rin looked at each other, checking if either had any questions. Hearing the silence from them, Suzune gave Elia a sign to start speaking. Rin thought to himself that he was weak yet again not being able to face his own mistakes. He grew angrier and angrier at himself. Until as Suzune was about to start talking.
- Can I say something first? - said Rin desperately.
- Hmm? Yes, go on Rin. - answered calmly Suzume
- I-I am very extremly sorry to everyone!!! For upsetting you all with how I lashed out and ignored everyone's feelings only to satisfy my selfish needs of being a protector of everyone!!! I am sorry for being so rude, ignorant, stupid and for leting my emotions control me!!! - pleaded Rin with tears in his eyes, deeply bowing in front of everyone.
The girls looked at each other with a bit of a surprise on their faces. Deep inside they were happy to see him apologizing, especially Suzume. She was expecting another rough conversation, but as it turned out she was not the only one feeling bad about everything. She looked straight at Rin and said. - Apologies accepted. - As Rin looked up at Elia, he saw a warm smile of a very happy girl. In that moment Elia got up and walked up to Rin. She took his hands and said. - I am also sorry for messing up on my part, and I promise to find a way for you to go back home. - Rin looked her in the eyes with a bit of confusion and returned the smile accepting the apology.
A moment later, as everyone settled down again, they began their conversation for the third time, this time in a much more friendly and positive atmosphere.
- So in short there has been some "fonky wonky" when you practiced and we ended up here right? - Said Rin
- Yes. - answered Elia shortly with a chuckle at the remark about her mistake during the casting process.
- I see. I have been wondering though. When we were summoned here, we found ourselves in a voidless space and heard a female voice speak to us, asking us to save the world just like you. But was it you that spoke to us? I wanna know because the voice we heard then sounds different from yours. - asked curious Rin.
- A-a voice spoke to you? - asked confused Elia out loud. - N-no that wasn't me. I didn't even know you could speak to the person you're summoning. - continued the girl.
- Well. Guess that's another mystery we have to answer. Oh man. Isn't there anything we can confirm now so we could make any progress??? - said gutted Rin with a sigh.
- Actually, there is. I can check your magic apptitude if you are interested. - said with excitement Elia.
- Magic, huh? - Rin suddenly gained his energy back and with sparkling eyes looked at the girl in a big hat. - You have my attention. - he added.
Suzune and Mitsuki felt sidelined the whole time seeing the two get closer as the discussion went on, so they decided to speak up about wanting to know about their magic as well. Elia took out a small crystal out of her pocket and placed it on the table and explained what to do.
- In order to figure out your magic aptitude, you will try using simple spells with the help of this crystal working as a catalyst helping you channel your mana. The stronger the effect of the spell the higher potential you have. - said Elia in an informative tone. - In this world almost everyone can use at least the simplest spells, but people with real potential are capable of truly incredible things. - she continued. - First, let me explain how to use mana. The most important thing is imagination. When using mana for anything you need to imagine what do you want it to transfer to. It's the basics of basics of magic. So when you want to create a small flame you have to imagine a flame appearing in your hand. Just like that. - As the girl has said that a small flame appeared above her palm flickering cheerfully. Everyone looked in awe and immediately extended their hands in front of them trying the same with no success.
- To cast any spell, you can't just imagine it. You need to feel it. Channel your mana and mold it into the thing you want. - said Elia trying to help.
After that, Rin, Mitsuki, and Suzume focused and imagined a little flame appearing in their hand and tried to “feel” it as well. After a couple of tries, flames formed above Rin's and Suzume's palms. Suzume's flame was much brighter and more energetic, but Rin's was still impressive. As for Mitsuki, she struggled and only managed a couple of sparks in the end.
- Well, I guess that answers two of your questions. - said Elia in that moment.
- What do you mean? - asked the group in confusion.
- Now you know your magic aptitude, and as Mitsuki asked yesterday about the meaning of prophecy. One of you will be the hero capable in both magic and close combat. One will be a Master of hand-to-hand combat. And one will be a great sorcerer. - replied Elia.
- You're right. - Rin with a serious look and the fire remaining in his palm, looked at the girl. - And since you are helping us. Maybe we should help you as well? I mean it probably would be better than sitting and doing nothing all day. We could find some answers to the mysteries in the process, and it won't hurt to try. After all, we are supposed to be the ones who save this place. - said Rin with a smile.
