Chapter 3:

Something Out There

Whispers Of The Mist

‘Grandma, why did you stay behind.’ Karina hesitated. ‘You know, after grandpa died.’

Karina vowed just before dinner not to ask anything that could make her grandmother Winona, uncomfortable. But looking at the plenty hanging herbs and rustic decors surrounding the interior, surrounding her, she thought she could at least ask what is worth sticking around for. Worth going through the trouble of creating a safe space within a safe space.

‘This is where I have spent the most time with your grandpa. I can feel his presence here. Within this house.’ Winona answered honestly. To Karina’s surprise.

Winona is not one to show how vulnerable she is. Hence at the age of 80, she still advocates for her own independence, much to the dismay of her children.

‘What happened during the time you passed out on the fields?’ Karina risked asking, but went for it.

‘You have to understand, the voices you hear, they’re not who they’re supposed to be.’ Winona looked down on her slice of apple pie.

‘Didn’t your grandpa also told you?’ Winona added. ‘So no going out after the sun goes down.’

Karina recalled the time her grandpa reminded her not to follow anyone who looks or sounds like her mother. As that wasn’t her mother anymore.

They both fell silent as they just stared into their unfinished desert. Each having their own internal fight to face.

That night, Karina couldn’t sleep once more. She made sure she stepped over the creaking parts of the wooden floor. She’s had them memorized within just a day of being around.

‘Where is the honey?’ Karina whispered to herself.

As she rummaged around the kitchen, she heard something moved from the backyard.

You’re kidding?

‘Karina, help me, I’ve slipped.’

The cup fell out of her hand. Karina raced to the back door. She just heard her grandmother asking for help.
