Chapter 24:
Miasma
The scrapping of metal closed in on us as the infested knight slowly made his way toward us, dragging his bronze, ornate great sword along the ground. His armor's beautiful bronze color was slowly being covered by an ever growing black mass, and his sword was now covered in fleshy threads. At this point, Serrum, Dente, Fesha, and I have all placed our corners of the explosion engine on the dusty road, preparing to face our enemy. A metallic click sounded next to me. I looked over to see the barrel of Serrums prosthetic had unlatched itself and was ready to be used. Dente readied his axe and braced himeself, while Fesha coated her fingers in explosive powder. I followed suite, undoing the spear on my back and holding it firmly in my grasp. I tried holding it up in confidence, but the awkward shape of the ellipse shaped handle prevented me from doing so. My confidence that I would be able to help at all shot down. I hoped for a moment that maybe whoever was also inside this body would grant me strength once again.
Then, in an instant, a tendril shot forward at us and a beam of light shot out from behind me. An explosion of yellow light lit the surrounding area as Fesha made contact using her miracle. Dente and Serrum immediately lunged forward at the site of the first explosion. The knights blackened appendages whipped around in the air as Serrum and Dente dodged each attack with precise timing. Fesha flung a few more projectiles at the other appendages in order to halt its movement but to no avail. Meanwhile, I stood and watched it all unfold, unable to move from the spot I stood on. I trembled, begging in my head for an ounce of strength and courage. I looked back at Fesha to see her reaction.
"Listen, whatever thee did back then, we need it now!" She yelled at me.
"I told you, I don't how I did that!" I retorted.
Fesha rolled her eyes at me in annoyance. "Make it work, otherwise, they may becometh distrustful of thee, or worse, could die." She said coldly.
I groaned in annoyance then finally found a bit of my own courage to walk forward, spear pointed out and gripping tightly. Slowly that walk turned into a jog toward the fight. I stopped just outside the black tendrils' swinging range, unable to figure out how I would make it through. I watched as Serrum continuously attempted to close in, dagger in one had, and her prosthetic engaged. Dente attempted to do the same, but could not get in range to swing his axe. Then, in an instant, I saw an opening formed by the work Serrum and Dente consistently dodging, and Fesha's deadly accuracy. I bolted straight toward the knight, unsure if I would have the reaction time to dodge any unpredictable movement. With the appendages focused on Serrum and Dente, I was able to slip past, spear at the ready, and the knight now just a couple of steps away from me. With this distance, I knew I could land a hit. I thrust the crescent blade forward with all the force I could muster and the little technique that I know. With in a second, I found myself with a clear shot, and now I was falling over. The knight had finally lifted the great sword that he had kept at his side the whole time. How could I have forgotten? In one swing, he redirected my spear's trajectory, dragging me along with it. As I fell, the knight went in for a second swing right to the side of my head. As the bronze edge cut the air toward my face, I closed me eyes. This is the end I thought.
Then, a pulse inside me ached in my chest. When I had opened my eyes, my vision was no longer mine, but I was still watching from my point of view. The same feeling I felt when I fought Tenebris lingered, and my body began to move on its own once more. I watched as my body fell to the ground and a thick blade approaching my head turned from an eminent death into a skillful counter. My right arm moved toward the end of the spear, clutching its hilt. My finger pressed the trigger, unsheathing the sword that hid within the spear shaft. My arm wielding the sword swung over my head until the blade was on my left side, facing downward. The bronze great sword made contact but was blocked by my blade. As the bronze sword pushed me away, my left hand reached out to grab the spear before getting shoved along the brick road. My body tumbled then elegantly stood tall, a sword in my right hand, and a long spear in the other, now rested upon my left shoulder.
The knight twitched more violently as the black appendages extended from his armor even further. It ran at me, scrapping the edge of his sword against the road as it approached. My body acted on autopilot and dashed forward. As the tendrils swung rapidly, my right arm swung equally as fast, slicing right through each attack whilst the spear stayed on my shoulder. In the blink of an eye, I had already gotten in range of the knight. A flash of the great sword swung in from my right, but my arm effortlessly parried it to the ground despite the blades' size differences. Finally, the spear had left my shoulder while the knight was wide open. It slashed through the roots of the tendrils, making them dance sporadically. My left arm was now across my body gripping the spear now resting on my right. My legs pushed on the slanted surface of the knight's sword with all their might, flinging me above his head. My arm swung the spear into the side of the knight's helmet, the crescent blade catching on the crown of horns, right before landing on his shoulders. His helmet flew across the air, revealing the vile mess that the black growth made of the man under all the armor. My feet planted firmly on his shoulders, my right hand twisted the sword, putting it in a reverse grip. Then, with a loud splat, my arm plunged the sword into the neck of this nameless man. His body collapsed immediately and I landed perfectly back on the ground. Suddenly, my body was in control once again.
As I stepped back the knight began twitching again as it slowly got up, but it was no use. Serrum had positioned herself right behind him, placing the barrel that protruded from her prosthetic up against the bronze. Then, the metal in her arm sounded off a loud metallic click. The explosion powder in her prosthetic lit and a compact explosion followed after, leaving a gaping hole in the knight's chest. With that, he fell lifeless, no longer moving.
I looked down at the fallen knight, knowing that I had done nothing. The mysterious person within me came back to save me yet again.
