Chapter 29:
The Commander's Final Class
The bright morning in New Kyoto arrived. The students and teachers were getting ready to head to their last destination: a famous hot spring. But in the midst of their excitement, Arata's phone rang. He answered it, seeing Pierson Howalt's name on the screen. Pierson's voice was panicked and broken.
"Arata! You need to get out of Kyoto and take the kids with you! Now!" Pierson shouted, his voice filled with urgency.
"What's wrong, Pierson? Why do you sound so panicked?" Arata asked, confused.
"The ARAAF and The Serpent are hunting you and your students! Get out of there immediately!" Pierson's communication was cut off.
Arata, in a hurry, had no choice but to tell the students that their final trip to the hot spring was canceled because of a terrorist attack. This caused them all to panic and prepare to leave Kyoto.
"Chisa, please, take care of the kids. I have something important I have to do," Arata said to Chisa, who already knew that things were not okay.
"But Arata-kun, will you be alright?" Chisa asked.
"Don't worry, I'll be fine." They all went to the train station, while Arata asked Narukami and Shion to escort the students.
"Narukami, please escort them to the station. I want you to keep an eye on them all the way to Tokyo."
"But Sensei?" Reiji asked.
"Go, now!" Arata commanded.
Right then, Reiji contacted his father, Commissioner Narukami, to report a terrorist attack in Kyoto. Just as he finished, gunshots rang out, aimed directly at Arata. Arata knew they were after him, and he ran in the opposite direction, separating from the students to draw the enemy away.
"Sensei!" Akari and Mei screamed, seeing their teacher being shot at. Arata waved his hand, telling Shion to take them away.
The battle began. Arata drew his pistol, shooting down one enemy after another. He quickly grabbed a bulletproof vest from one of the terrorists and took his assault rifle. Another group of terrorists arrived and started shooting at Arata.
The sound of gunfire could be heard far away at the train station. The students could only watch helplessly as their teacher fought alone.
On the road to Kyoto, Pierson and Natasha, along with their special forces team, received a news report. "We have a report of a heavy firefight in Kyoto! A single armed man is fighting against a group of terrorists!"
Pierson and Natasha exchanged looks. They knew exactly who that man was.
"It's Arata!" Natasha shouted, urging their tactical van driver to speed up.
In the middle of the battle, Arata saw a terrorist in a black mask and a bulletproof vest get out of a van. They were The Serpent, and that meant he was their main target.
Reiji, however, was not one to stand by. He left the students with Shion and Daigo. The three of them, who were initially strangers, had to work together to save their teacher.
"You're Shion, the genius hacker, right?" Reiji asked.
"Yeah, you're right. Why are you here?" Shion asked.
"I'm planning to help Arata-Sensei. He's in trouble. As a future police officer, I can't just stand by and watch innocent civilians get shot."
Reiji then looked at Daigo. "And you, I know you. We met during a police raid, didn't we, Daigo?"
Daigo was annoyed but had no choice but to help.
Akari and Mei, seeing that Shion, Daigo, and Reiji were gone, panicked. They could only hide from the incoming gunfire.
Reiji used his homemade pistol to shoot at the terrorists heading to the station, while Shion used his skills to close the station's entrance. Daigo helped evacuate the terrified civilians.
Arata was becoming overwhelmed. The enemy force was growing, and he was running out of ammo. He was forced to take cover behind a pile of crates. From there, he saw Alena hiding in a convenience store across the street.
Arata knew he had no other choice. He took out the remaining enemies with his pistol, which was now almost out of ammunition. He was hit in the left hand, but even though he felt the pain, all he cared about was his student's safety.
Arata ran into the convenience store and found Alena hiding under the counter.
"Sensei, what are you doing here?" Alena asked.
"I should be the one asking you that," Arata replied.
Alena saw the bullet wound on her teacher's hand. "Sensei, your wound! Is it alright?"
"Yes, I'm fine," Arata said, trying to endure the pain.
On the other side, Pierson and Natasha, along with their special forces team, had arrived. They quickly took out the other terrorists and headed to the station. They thought Arata would be there. When they arrived, the situation was calm. They saw many of Arata's students hiding. Some of the special forces began evacuating them on a special train, with the help of Shion and Daigo. However, Akari and Mei refused to leave without Arata.
"I know you're worried about your teacher, but don't worry," Pierson said. "He knows how to survive. Trust him."
In the bullet-riddled convenience store, Arata and Alena were still trapped. Arata used his pistol to take out four remaining The Serpent members. Believing the situation to be safe, Arata went with Alena to the station.
But Spade, from his sniper position, was still watching Arata's movements through his scope.
When they arrived at the station, they met Pierson and Natasha. However, a horrifying sight greeted them: a civilian wearing a bomb vest. On the vest were a pair of IEDs that would soon explode, destroying the entire station.
"Please! Help me! I don't want to die like this!" the man screamed in terror.
Pierson and Natasha couldn't defuse the bomb. Arata, who knew how, stepped forward and started cutting the wires. But suddenly, a flashing light came from the fourth floor of a building. Doooor! A bullet from Spade's sniper rifle hit Arata, sending him flying.
"Damn it! Sniper! Arata-san, take cover!" Pierson shouted.
Arata, lying on the ground in excruciating pain, tried to get up again. He cut the red and yellow wires. Again, the sniper shot him, but luckily, he managed to cut the two wires before being thrown back.
Arata was bleeding heavily. He looked at Pierson with a faint gaze. "Pierson, please take care of my sister, Koyomi. Tell her I'll always love her very much."
"Don't talk like that, Arata," Pierson replied, his voice trembling. "You're the one who needs to tell her that."
But there was no response from Arata. Heavy rain began to fall, as if to mourn his death. Blood continued to flow from Arata's body, mixing with the rain on the station floor.
Meanwhile, the special forces managed to take out Spade, who was trying to escape. Reiji and the police force arrived, securing the area and looking for the remaining terrorists.
