Chapter 29:
The Devourer of Destiny
The Human, Magician, Orc, Vampire, and Beast races lay powerless on the floor. They all fell victim to Mahendra's recent attacks, whether from fire magic, daggers, or ancient spells. Even the wielder of the large scythe, who had only been standing to the side with his head bowed, had now fainted after watching Mahendra kill the tavern owner.
The stench of iron was sickening. Exhaustion and sleepiness began to set in. Mahendra repeatedly let out a sigh, standing there lost in thought for a moment.
"What a waste. A city filled with talented people is being punished for a crime that isn't even theirs."His sweat-soaked back and chest showed how tired he was. His red eyes still glowed brightly, and his pupils looked even sharper and more terrifying. The ancient spell-like sentences reappeared on the surface around his body, with each line readable vertically in the same crimson color.
With the exception of the tavern owner, who was an accomplice of the gods, the fighters' wounds in the underground slowly began to close and heal. Over time, they recovered quite quickly without medicine or even healing magic. However, their consciousness was still deeply asleep. All their wounds were absorbed by the power of his ancient spell, which meant Mahendra bore all the pain alone.Mahendra certainly felt all of that pain, it felt like being stabbed by countless sharp objects. However, it didn't last very long, as he, too, could heal on his own.
"Ugh... it hurts!" There was not a single wound on him, but his soul was wounded.Mahendra only had less than two years left to live. Plus, he had to bear the wounds of dozens of people here, which must have significantly shortened his remaining lifespan. He was sometimes struggling to support his own body. With his time running out, Mahendra knew that delaying any longer would only harm him. He forced himself to stand once again, his body stained with the blood of his enemies who now lay lifeless around him.
The power of the ancient spell was activated once more, causing his curse marks to spread over nearly half of his body, even reaching his face. The red color at the tips of his hair grew longer as Mahendra expanded the area of the ancient spell, encompassing the entire Northwest city."I will devour the foul destiny of this city!"
A large red magic circle appeared right under his feet, and the ground trembled everywhere as if an earthquake was occurring. His power intensified, and he began to feel another source of power that was trapping the city, which he could destroy with just a touch of his finger. In an instant, the weather changed, becoming warmer, not cold or too hot. The air in the underground became fresh, and small plants started to grow nearby.
This phenomenon didn't stop there. Outside the tavern, water emerged from cracks in the ground. The warm weather, which was only temporary, turned a bit cooler, and dark clouds gathered, causing rain to fall. It only took a moment for the ground to become wet again, and grass began to grow quickly.Meanwhile, Ningsih peeked from behind the door with a confused expression. She saw an old man approaching Mahendra, so she half-ran to join him.
"How did you know this person was an accomplice of the gods?" asked the city's ancestor, referring to the tavern owner."I just smelled something foul from him," Mahendra replied casually, while suppressing the power of his ancient spell.
"A foul smell?""I can't see anyone's face here. I can only smell a person, and see the aura and power within their body. That's all."
"Is that what a Devourer Destiny is like? I'm just learning this now.""What do you think? Shouldn't you know what a Devourer Destiny is?"
"He is you, and you are him. You are all the same. Even your faces are the same," he said.Mahendra was quite shocked to hear this, but he chose to ignore it because he didn't think it was important.
"The old man known as the city's ancestor has lived long enough to have known the Devourer Destiny two thousand years ago.""You're right."
Mahendra sighed again, closing his eyes. He then turned and looked at the old man, giving him a faint smile."I can see your fear when you talk to me, but I'm sure it's not because of me, but because of him."
"Ah, so the Devourer Destiny can read expressions?""Hmm... I just feel it. I feel someone's emotions. Well... that does sound like reading expressions."
Suddenly, for no reason at all, the city's ancestor knelt and said, "Thank you, Devourer Destiny."His red eyes blinked several times, and his mouth hung open in shock at the old man's gratitude, especially since he was kneeling like that.
"I know you are a bringer of disaster, and we all hate you, but at the same time, you are a bringer of blessings that makes the world's order bow to you."
"Stop! I don't understand what you mean, and I'm not interested. Ugh... why does everyone I meet lately keep showing me respect? Don't think I'm going to take on the fate of this world," Mahendra grumbled."But, you're—"
"I'm not a hero."
The once non-existent Northwest City came into being, a fertile land that caused a stir in the surrounding area. The city, which used to be a cage or prison for those called sinners, is now completely free of all its rules. The few remaining people outside the inn didn't understand what was happening, except for the fighters in the underground arena who realized it after they woke up.The illusionary barrier had been destroyed, and the city was open. The Western region became aware of this. Other people could go in and out, but the gods could no longer touch the Northwest City. They realized that the one who did all this was the Devourer Destiny.
"These audacious sinners, he just set them free. How audacious of him! I'll make sure his death won't be as easy as it was before!" Zia—Speck of Light—was furious. They couldn't even touch the people living in the Northwest because they were blocked by something similar to the illusionary barrier they had once used to imprison the city.
