Chapter 10:
Grimoire's Spellbook: Primordial Sin of Selfishness
So, Alois was one of the virtues that Lilith had warned him about. Not that it mattered anymore.
“I guess we will have to fight, Lux,” Aurelis said and grabbed his sword.
Amalia put per hand in front of him, standing in between Aurelis and Alois.
“Get out of the way Amalia. Don’t make it worse than it already is.”
She stared coldly at him. “I became a guard to guard the citizen from this town. They are my responsibility, not your or the king’s orders. I will do what I think is right.”
Alois sighed. “Then it is what it is.” He summoned a royal blue spear, which barely had any glow. Still, it had some viciousness to it, an aura that surged through the air. Aurelis was sure there was a spirit inside, seemingly even stronger than Lux.
“Aurelis. You need to get out of here. I’m sorry, this is my fault.”
Aurelis didn’t understand what she had to do with that, but there was something that she probably didn’t tell him yet. But as he got to know her, she didn’t intend any harm. Frankly, Aurelis does not even care about whose fault it is. There was one sole thought in his mind. He hated people, who think authority brings rightfulness.
“I doubt that you wanted this to happen. So please don’t worry. I know people like him. They are always in the right.” Aurelis put his hand on her shoulder.
Amalia nodded. “Thank you for your kindness, but this situation is no joke. Alois is one of the seven strongest fighters of humanity. You cannot fight him. He is blessed by the world.”
Blessed… Cursed and blessed, that was what Lilith talked about. He, as a sin, was cursed. Then the virtues were the blessed ones? That was probably why she told him to be warry of virtues. They were chosen by the world.
Based on what did the world choose them though, that they turned out to be human garbage? Someone like Aurelis became a sin, but that guy was a virtue. The world should have chosen better. If all the virtues were like Alois, Aurelis would have a problem with them all.
Alois’ spear rose up, levitating besides him. “Let’s see how strong you have gotten, Amalia. Our last sparring was over a decade ago.”
“Attack me. I don’t care. I will fulfil my responsibility till my last breath.”
The spear catapulted forward. Amalia crossed her arms, ready to take on that shot. But instead of charging into her, it changed its path and targeted Aurelis.
His eyes widened. A loud clanking echoed over the street. Aurelis was barely fast enough to defend himself with the sword. But the spear was so strong that it pushed him back down the street.
“What the hell is that supposed to be, Alois?! I thought you wanted a duel!” Amalia glared at him.
Alois grinned.
“Didn’t you claim that you will fulfil your responsibility to protect him? Then attacking you would make no sense right?”
Amalia clenched her fist. “You are as petty as ever.”
A golden flash arose from Amalia. It staggered and exploded, unleashing an aura that was almost as strong as Alois’. A halo flickered over her head, manifesting fully. It shone in a golden glow.
Alois retracted his spear, leaving Aurelis room to breathe again.
“You are a virtue, too, huh. I didn’t realize it in all these years. How is that possible?”
Amalia’s whole body trembled. “I told you. I will fulfil my responsibility.”
Alois sighed and then laughed. “I want to see that. Have I ever shown you my unique skill, Amalia?”
A hidden skill?! Aurelis clenched his teeth. Virtues were like sins in that regard, then.
Alois raised his hand. All around exact duplicates of the spear appeared. There were so many, Aurelis couldn’t count them.
“Lux, please prepare.”
The spirit squeaked and faded into the sword, causing it to glow.
Alois looked coldly at Amalia. “You are only as strong as a virtue. But you don’t know what your unique skill is. Until then, you are no more than a glorified human.”
The spears lit up in a blueish glow and shot down. The barrage of spears hunted them, shooting towards them so quickly, that Aurelis was unable to follow all of them with his eyes. The ground trembled with every impact, leaving behind holes and walls of dust. What was that strength?! Aurelis ran down the street, dodging them one by one, but the barrage followed him and only him.
“Aurelis!” Amalia flared up. She took out her whip, turning to Alois. The ground beneath her cracked. “Don’t you mock me,” she said, leaping towards him.
Alois moved down to the ground, dodging Amalias whiplashes, which got faster with every movement. But Alois kept up with it.
“This won’t help you,” he said. Behind him dozens of spears manifested, now shooting at her too.
The first spear barely strafed her, but she already gritted her teeth. The second one crept towards her, which she dodged. But there were too many. A spear pierced into her thigh. She cried out in pain and sacked to her knees. Pulling out the spear she coughed, glaring at Alois.
Aurelis made a sharp turn and a dozen of spears shot past him into the ground. He saw Amalia on her knees. His eyes widened. No! He couldn’t let her die. He needed to activate his skill. But he had no clue how to do that. Last time it activated on its own. How did it happen, though?! Then he remembered. Aurelis halted, facing the spears that charged towards him. One blasted past his cheek, strafing him, leaving behind a trail of blood.
Alois stood in front of Amalia. “Who would have thought that it ends this way.” He manifested another spear, high above her. “Good night, Amalia,” he said, moving down his hand, the spear following down.
Amalia closed her eyes, the tears overflowing her face. “I’m sorry, Aurelis.”
But nothing happened. She opened her eyes. Aurelis stood in front of her, the spear in his hand.
He stood directly in front of Alois. His eyes were pitch black and his halo hovered above his head. Aurelis was grinning from one end to the other, revealing his now sharp fangs. Aurelis glared at him, breathing directly into his face. “Hello, pretty boy. You piss me off. Ever tasted stones before? I’m kind of petty, so having you on your knees is not low enough for me.”
He grabbed Alois by his hair and catapulted him face down into the ground.
