Chapter 5:
Shadow’s Cast
I walked in the forest made of stars. It was warm, and there was the smell of prey in the air. I quickly walked though the valley. Birds chips, and cats shared tongues in the sunlight. I stopped at the pool that was a window into looked down onto the clans.
"Mom?" I spun on my tail. I tried to focus on her so I could simply 'travel' to her. But my emotions rose quickly.
"Nightwhisper?" I turn.
"Dove's Wing!" I greet the grey she-cat with the brightest of green eyes with relief.
"She's this way." She waves with her tail to fallow. Cloverstar is talking to my mother is a hushed voice. She and Dove's Wing leave us be.
"Mom." I rush for her. She licked the top of my head like I'm a kit again.
"I'm sorry Nightwhisper. I'm sorry I left. I'm sorry there is only so much I can do to protect you now. I hoped befriending the leader, and medicine cat would be enough. I should have known better. That they'ed turn on us. I should have left with you."
"You didn't choose to die. It's Vineleap's fault." My claws unsheathed.
"He will be leader soon. His word will be law. Branchstar is on his last life." Her voice sounds sad. "There was nothing we could have done."
"He will be leader. He'll drive me away." I say.
"He may kill you to keep his secrets. You have power Nightwhisper. You are a traveler. There has never been anyone like you and there may never be again. You were chosen to receive these powers by those who exist even above StarClan." I had heard the rumors. The wild cats we descended from. More divine than even StarClan. "You have a great destiny ahead of you. With or without ShadowClan. With or without StarClan. I will go where you go. I am never truly leaving you. Even if you're going to forge your own path now." She pauses. "Vineleap is cruel. ShadowClan doesn't understand. Your father- I loved him. Completely. I will wait for him. He didn't know about you. You're so much like him. Strong. A free thinker. Clever, and strong willed."
"I get those things from my mother." I say. She presses her nose to mine.
"Vineleap tried to banish me. I refused to leave. Then he attacked me with the intent to kill me." My coat bristles. "You are my daughter. You are my legacy. You are the one I care for more than anything. You must live a long, happy life. Do you understand?" I nod.
"Yes mom."
"Good. Now wake up. Wake up Nightwhisper." Featherfur was shaking me awake.
"Sorry." She says. "You were talking in your sleep."
"It's alright." I say. Sitting up. Feeling a little better.
"Um," she says nervously. "Vineleap wants you on the dawn patrol." Now I feel worse. I'm going to kill him. He wants to make my life miserable. I stand and pad over to Snowdrift, Shadowfade, and Foxleap. Foxleap avoids my eyes. I see a mix of resentment and shame in his eyes. He resents me for being half-clan but is ashamed all the same? "Oh, and Nightwhisper. I'm sorry." I just nod to Featherfur not sure what to say.
"Come on. Let's get this over with." Snowdrift says, sounding annoyed at Vineleap. I fallow behind. Foxleap makes no jabs about this.
"Look at this." You got to be kidding me! A ThunderClan patrol walks up to the boarder. Foxleap and Snowdrift's fur bristles. I recognize Hallowlight, and Mooncurl's apprentice, now warrior Starflight among them.
"We've just come to mark our boarder." Snowdrift says.
"I think you should move your boarder back a bit." Hallowlight says.
"At least that way you might remember where it is." I comment. Foxleap holds back a meow of laughter. Snowdrift and the ThunderClan cats glare in my detection. I ignore all of them. The patrol leader turns to me. I hold their gaze.
"Don't start a battle. Not today."
"Is the ShadowClan warrior scared?" She asks though she shifts under my gaze.
"No. But you should be." I leap claws outstretched. I land on the patrol leader. I bit hard into her shoulder. She flips me over, but I dodge before she can pin me. I strike out with a paw unbalancing her. She falls and I leave long scratches down her back. I can her cats fighting on ether side of me. Starflight pounces on me. We roll a ball of fur, and claws. I speak one more word.
"Run." I use a StarClan move to bat at her head. Then I bit down on neck we she stumbles back unsteady. When she struggles to shake me off and fight back. I bit down harder. We lock eyes. I say noting the message was clear. If I wanted any of you dead. I could kill you. I stand, and Starflight runs for it. I leap at Hallowlight using my weight to get move her off Snowdrift. A ThuderClan move ironically. Snowdrift has stop fighting to watch me. To watch this stand off. I finally see fear enter Hallowlight's eyes. The patrol leader voice rings clear above the chaos.
"Retreat." I don't wait for the order to turn back. Besides a few scratches everyone's alight.
"Who taught you that? It was impressive." Foxleap says to me. He does sound impressed, but more suspicious than anything. I say nothing. I can tell Snowdrift is listening intently to our conversation. When we reach the entrance to camp, she stops me. Taking me aside.
"Who taught you that?" She hisses.
"What?" I fake innocence.
"Those's moves. There from other clans. Some of them I've never seen before. Are you training with someone from another clan? Or outside of one?" I want to claw off her whiskers. Instead to push past her into camp. Eyes fallow me. Everyone must have heard. I ignore them, and curl up into my nest to train in StarClan. I wake to a commotion. Wailing. I run out into the came. My heart breaks. It's Shadowfade. She's crying over Snowdrift's cold body. I look around for someone to tell me what happed. Gently Featherfur says;
"She fell in a small underground cave. We managed to drag her out but..." Her neck was at an odd angle. Deep scratches ran down her belly and side. Smaller ones on her pelt as well. I felt some ones eyes on me. I turn making eye contact with Vineleap. All he says is;
"We will hold a vigil."
