Chapter 0:

The Hill and the Blue Blobs

Bob

On top of a wide hill, someone was sleeping.

His name was Bob. He was a Human.

In a world that knew not of Humans.

The hill was quiet. The grass was deep green and soft. A light breeze carried the scent of damp earth and strange flowers. In the sky, two small suns cast a warm light.

Around Bob, several clear blue blobs moved like living jelly. They had no eyes or mouths. They just... were. Most ignored the figure lying amongst them.

But the smallest one was curious. It swayed closer to Bob's plain face, his messy white hair ruffling in the breeze. The blob paused, then nudged his cheek.

It felt cold and wet.

Bob's eyes opened.

The first thing he saw was the blue blob. He didn't scream. He didn't startle. He just blinked, then tilted his head.

The blob swayed, as if in response.

Bob sat up. He looked at his hands. Five fingers. Pale skin. He patted his chest.

"Bob!"

His voice was quiet, a simple fact. He pointed at himself. He looked around: the hill, the grass, the two suns, the blue blobs. He pointed at himself again, with more force.

"Human!"

The small blob only swayed.

Bob reached out a finger and touched it. The surface was cool and springy. The blob trembled, then went still. It wasn't hostile. It wasn't afraid.

A very faint smile touched Bob's lips before vanishing. He pulled his finger back.

He stood up. Below the hill, a sea of trees stretched to the horizon. The leaves were silver, indigo, and red. It was a vast, silent, and alien sight.

Bob watched the forest for a long time. His expression was flat, but his eyes took in every detail.

His stomach rumbled. The sound was clear in the quiet air.

He looked down and patted his stomach.

"Bob... hungry."

His gaze fixed on the forest. A place of strange colors. A place for food.

With a small nod, Bob walked down the hill. The blue blobs swayed behind him, a silent farewell.

Bob's journey had begun.
