Chapter 23:

You are special

Laurels Journey

The excitement was welling within me!

I was back home!

We were in the middle of a midterm break meaning students were going back home, I was hoping to go back with Charlotte but she had a separate person come pick her up.

The castle is as lavish as ever! I’m not usually allowed to move around but today I had special permission to.

I decided to try my luck and visit charlotte in her room on the other side of the castle.

I was expecting a few people to try and stop me, but everyone passing by immediately let me in, and opened the path to me.

They must have been instructed to let me in, in the past charlotte had instructed the people working to stop me.

As I was pondering what the occasion was, I ran into Aunty. “Hey, Aunty! Things going well?”

“They are. How are you today?” She resembled Charlotte quite a bit.

“I’m good!”

Aunty took the time to greet me today, that’s rare I’m very grateful.

“I came to deliver a message. Your father wishes to speak to you.”

“Is that so?” I asked.

“It is so.” She replied.

“I’ll be sure to pay him a visit then!”

“Fair well then child of sin.” she said.

Afterwards I made my way to Charlotte’s room.

“Helloooo! My dear little sister!” I greeted her with the full extent of my love.

“H-hello.”

Hmm…did I hear that correctly? Is she actually opening up to me now?

“Have you finally awakened to your true feelings for me?”

“What feelings are those?” she asked.

“Love.”

“Love?” she blushed.

“You’re ashamed to say you love me?”

“Don’t be ridiculous I hate you! The only thing I care about is graduating from the academy as the best witch and proving that I’m BETTER THAN YOU!”

“Sorry... Today is supposed to be your special day, I am trying to be polite yet you act so infuriating as if you want to make me mad!” She spoke with the softness of a butterfly.

A rare apology from Charlotte, she’s such an angel at heart!

Hmm, but hold on… What’s so special about today?”

“Today is a special day?”

“It’s your birthday.”

Oh

For the first time in a long time, I was allowed into Charlotte’s room. She didn’t really talk much and just sat there reading for hours on end. Some might have found this to be boring but watching her read was quite the treat!

“We used to hang out all the time when you were younger.”

After a long pause she gave me a silent whisper of a reply.

“Things aren’t the same anymore.”

“They are.” I confidently answered her.

“They aren’t!”

“Mother told me that you and I aren’t the same, she told me to hate and despise you, so I can’t be your precious little sister!”

Did Aunty say that? Hmm...

I can’t really argue with that logic. If Aunty said that then it must be true, but living life that way sounds sad.

“You are someone who I have to be better than. I’ve had to work hard to be mother’s perfect daughter. To be better than you. All the while you enjoyed your carefree life. ”

“Oh! I get it now!”

Charlotte looked surprised, I understood her.

“You do?”

“You think that if you can make your mother proud, you can lead yourself to believe you’ve achieved the things you want in life.”

BUT.

“Huh? What are you talking about?”

“But honestly, living that way for the sake of others won’t make you happy.”

Charlotte scoffed. “What do you know about what will make me happy? You’re a low status filthy pig with commoner blood.” She quickly cupped her mouth for some reason.

Oh, so she’s asking me to give her advice? Giving big sisterly advice makes me so happy!

“LISTEN WELL! THE SECRET TO HAPPINESS IS!” Hmm what would make lil sis happy? Are there qualifications for happiness? I need to think this through…

This was a difficult question but I’m very smart. “Do you believe that without wealth, status or noble blood one cannot find happiness?”

“…”

I replied noticing Charlotte’s silence. “MUHAHAHAHA.”

“Happiness is an individual pursuit to one’s ideal reality.”

“You’re my sister shouldn’t it have been your job to tell me to abandon it. Shouldn’t you have told me choose you.”

“Nope.” I answered.

I had no obligation to make Charlotte choose me, that wasn't my place, Aunty's place or anyone else's for that matter. There was only one person who had that right.

“Mother was right, you’re nothing but a filthy commoner, a pig, a liar, I don’t need you, all I need is to prove to father that I deserve the thrown more than a worthless mongrel like you.”

“Who is happier, the rich noble or the poor commoner???” I tilted my head quizzically to the side.

“Huh?” Charlotte glared.

She laughed.

And then laughed some more.

I also laughed. I mean it was pretty funny to see her laugh after so long.

“The rich noble obviously.” She replied.

“Nope!”

“Huh?” She didn’t look to pleased with my refusal.

“You mean to tell me it’s the commoner?” she scoffed.

“Both they of noble blood blessed with everything, and those living in the pits of hell without a thing can find their own happiness”

“That’s right. It’s unique for everyone, you won’t find it with me, or with anyone else. I can only be the me that I want to be for you, I can only point you in the right direction but you have to get there on your own.”

“I hate you.” Was all she could say to me afterwards.
