Chapter 15 - Magic

While Yumemi is taking her time to calm down, me and Kon hunted some more Red Lizards.

Kon has reached level 3 now. I can see his body slightly got bigger. Do young monsters grow like that? I can’t compare since no one else has lived through that slaughter to let me see their level.

Though looking at how big that wolf is, I can assume level does have some part on a monster’s size.

I guess I’ll find out soon enough after Kon raises his level a big time.

I jogged back to Yumemi’s side, checking on her.

“Yumemi, how do you feel?”

“Yeah… I’m fine now… though, I don’t think I can kill any monsters for a while…”

It isn’t easy to overcome fear after all…

Her reaction was not of a girl rejecting to do something just because she’s disgusted.

She definitely got more to her story at some point though.

When she gets that part of memory back, I’ll wait until she opens up to me.

“Sorry, even though I’ve said all that… I’m still useless after all…” she continued.

“You are not useless. You cook well, you know?”

“What does that gotta do in this situation!?”

“It gives me the motivation to fight.”

I honestly thought so. Even the fact that I’m not alone in this gives me hope.

“... it isn’t… that great of a deal…”

“Even if you think so, to me it’s a great deal.”

I’ve tried to cook for my parents once and it was a disaster. It's not something edible. Even mom’s help can’t fix that no matter what, so I got banned from the kitchen.

The only thing I can make are grilled skewers, which are basically just cutting meat and grilling. The taste wasn’t really great, but edible.

I'm glad I stopped before I can even give my little sister a taste of my abomination.

“When you are strong enough, you’ll have a leeway to overcome your fear. Just leave the monsters to us for now. ”

“Kyaun!”

We reassured her with confidence.

“... You two… Thank you…”

A stray rare Starwing Bat comes rushing to us.

I readied myself to use its speed and land a fatal blow.

But besides me, Kon also took a stance and opened his mouth.

“Kyau………”

I started to see some light from the nearby Glowing Moss went inside his body.

His body turned the blue light into red.

Then, the red glowing light flowed outside leaving his body. A glow of bright red energy is forming in front of him.

It is like a bright red fire.

“Kyaun!”

He released the fire and it hit the Starwing Bat. It pierces through the body, leaving a hole on the Starwing Bat’s chest.

“Kyaun kyaun!” Kon puffed his chest with his paw, looking proud.

Even though Kon’s supposed to be level 3, killing a Starwing Bat in one hit is just amazing.

And that thing just now…

I took a glance at Kon’s MP Gauge. It decreases around 10%.

“Was that magic…?” Yumemi asked, seeming to have realized that too.

“Kyaun!” Kon looks happy.

“That’s amazing, Kon-chan!”

Yumemi patted his head, and Kon wagged his tail.

“That sure is the strongest of our attacks, though it has a cast time of 5 seconds in total as a downside.”

All things have their consequences, I guess.

“Hey, Yuu-kun. I wonder…”

“Hmm?”

“By the fact that we have MP Gauge, doesn’t that mean we can learn magic?”

“If we know how magic works, maybe. I mean, the system doesn’t even explain what magic is to us.”

“Ah, I did it.”

“Huh?” “Kyaun?”

I found Yumemi summoned a small fire on her palm.

Her MP decreases by like 5 percent.

…

“Aren’t you just amazing!?”

“I didn't even think I could get it so fast! But how do I turn this off!?”

“Try to imagine yourself putting it out!”

“Ehh… well, I was thinking of a stove, so maybe if I turn off the stone… ah, I did it!”

I never heard someone learn magic while thinking of a stove in their head even in fiction.

She’s just so funny.

“That exhausts me a little…”

“I think that’s another downside of using magic. Magic sounds too good to be true after all.”

“If you ask me, the skills are way weirder!”

“Now that you’ve said that… The game-like system, us having no memories at first, I guess it’s too late to worry about how weird everything is.”

“Right…”

I wonder, why are we here in the first place? Who is behind all of this?

There must be a reason why we are brought here, and the biggest hint I can think of is our job being [Irregular].

I tried to imagine a fire appearing on my palm… but I couldn't make any fire.

I tried to imagine a flamethrower and raised my hand, but still nothing.

“Ugh… this is harder than I thought. How can you do it so easily, Yumemi?”

“Umm… I thought… If I learn magic, maybe I won’t have to deal with the sensation of stabbing monsters…”

“Ah…”

So that’s the reason. Maybe I don’t have any strong reason to use magic.

I guess not everything will sail smoothly.

“Then, I’ll count on you two for magic. Seems like I can’t use it for now.”

“Kyaun!”

“... Okay.”

And so, we continued to hunt for some lizards.

Yumemi managed to mimic Kon’s Fire Laser(temp) and shot down one laser.

It still shook her, but not as bad as her stabbing the monster.

After 3 shots, she got really exhausted even though her MP didn’t decrease that much.

I think she needs to adjust to using magic before she can master it.
