Chapter 35:
Our Town in another world
At the mansion, Muki pinched her face as she heard the sound of furious knocking on her door.
"Muki! Open up!" Yamane shouted as she banged on Muki's door.
Muki cautiously unlocked the door and stepped back. "Monika finally prodded her, but clearly in a bad way for me. I'll just have to hope she's just mad at me and not trying to kill me," she thought as Yamane opened the door.
"Muki! Explain yourself! Why have you been avoiding me and spreading rumors that I'm dead!?" Yamane glared.
Muki scowled as she pinched her face. "I've been busy with shit, and you've been getting checked by the doctors and going to school. And for Monika, I figured I'd fake your death to try and stop her from bothering you, but I guess it didn't work."
Those were plausible truths that could perfectly explain all of Muki's actions. However, Yamane knew her sister better than that.
"Muki... Why are you tensing up? You've never acted like this around me before."
Muki clicked her tongue as she took notice of her trembling hand. "Shit, she sees weakness. Guess gambling's all I can do now," she thought as she pulled out her gun.
"M- Muki?"
"Answer me! Are you really Yamane, or are you under those elves' control!?"
Yamane was taken aback by Muki's actions, further hurt by the fact that she could sense genuine fear from Muki. "M- Muki... It's me. Please calm down-"
"That ain't good enough! Yamane, do you really not remember jack from when you got attacked by the goblins!?"
"You're asking me too? I truly don't remember anything."
Muki scowled and began playing footage of the incident on the giant screen behind her. Yamane's eyes quickly diverted to the screen, though what she saw made her gag.
"This is footage of what happened to you that night. Pretty gruesome. You were dogpiled and mauled. Even our modern medicine would've had trouble keeping you alive. But then came the elves," Muki glared as footage played of Ikebukuro healing Yamane with magic. "Yamane, those elves are lying. They know how to use magic, heck they greeted us by killing our people along with the goblins, and I got the proof. Based off this footage, I'd imagine the only reason you were saved was because Ikebukuro swiped that phone off someone and managed to look you up to find out you had status and value. Now she's managed to marry the old bag, becoming our second mother on paper. You get why I'm so on edge!? Those elves have infiltrated us and are on the verge of conquering us! And since they used magic on you, I have no idea if they implanted something similar to a microchip."
In truth, Muki didn't wish to spill all this, but her genuine fear of a rouge Yamane was forcing her hand. She knew that if Yamane decided to attack, she'd be helpless due to the sheer difference in athleticism between the two. Thus, trying to get out of things with words and logic looked to be the best chance of survival for Muki.
"Muki... You think I'm possessed?" Yamane trembled.
"Word it like that and just maybe. Yamane, we're in a completely foreign world. We don't know jack shit about how it all works, and when we don't have the proper time to learn about it, we get antsy. The moment I saw this footage of you, I had no idea what to think. You were so banged up, but then healed to just mere bruises? Of course I'd think they'd throw in some order 99 esque protocol! If I don't stay on guard and think everything's fine, I'll get blindsided by those elves, and if I go, so goes the town's brain and best hope at survival."
"Why do you distrust the elves so much?"
"Uh, they were killing our people and lying about things!?" Muki fumed as she began playing more footage on screen of Bisento killing people.
"This all occurred before they properly met us. Maybe they were just afraid."
"YOU'RE DEFENDING THEM!?"
"Yes. They were likely afraid of us as they knew nothing about us, but now that they can see we're good people, they've relaxed."
"That's not good enough for me! Ikebukuro seduced the bag. She's clearly got her eyes on taking over this place, stealing our stuff, and killing us off!"
"That's just paranoia. Muki, I know it's hard for you to trust people, but you need to learn to fix that."
"Blind trust leads to a knife in the back. Yamane, can you not see I have ample reason to be afraid? There's elves out there that can wipe us out either with brute force or by literally eating out our entire food supply!" Muki fumed as she showed footage of Harajuku and Shalala on the screen. "These two literally robbed a store and got away with it because they were powerful enough to kill the cops that came after them with ease! What do you say to that!?"
Yamane watched the footage for a bit before rendering her judgement. "They clearly did the wrong thing, but that's why we need to correct them and teach them how to act for both our culture's sakes."
"Are you fucking shitting me? They knew damn well what they were doing was wrong, but did it anyway! Know why? They have power. They have power and think they're invincible. What will you do if they come back and start throwing people through the air for laughs!?"
"I'd deal with that if it came to it. Muki, I think you need to calm down. You're clearly overwhelmed from all this and need to just step back and sort things out rationally."
"I am!"
"No, you're not. I know! How about we both go ease your worries-"
"DON'T COME ANY CLOSER!"
"Muki! Don't be like this-"
Bang!
Muki's hands trembled madly as she held her gun and stared at the bullet hole in the wall. Yamane stopped and slowly touched her hand to her cheek, feeling the thin bloody scratch she had received from dodging the bullet.
Tears began to pour out of her eyes as she looked at Muki and smiled. "I see... My apologies, I didn't realize how afraid of me you were. Forget I said anything... I'll... leave you alone."
Yamane slowly left Muki's room and made her way to her own. Once there, she completely broke down in tears.
"Why!? Muki, why'd you shoot at me!? Why were you so afraid of me!? I thought... I was the only one you truly cared about..."
Back in Muki's room, Muki slumped to the ground breathing heavily. Tears slowly began to well up in her eyes as she tried to sort out everything that had just happened in her mind. "Yamane... Yamane seemed normal... But my reflexes... I panicked and fired at her... I didn't trust her... I didn't trust the one person I've constantly cared about for my whole life. Ahahahaha! She just doesn't get that I'm not her. Maybe she could beat those two elves into line with how broken she is, but the rest of us can't. And thanks to Monika fucking things up badly, I may have just destroyed my bond with Yamane. Fucking Monika, all the suffering and problems I have are all because that fucking bitch just wouldn't obey my orders all those years ago."
