Chapter 12:

Chapter 12 — Guardianship and Protection

Isekai Abyss: Life in Another World Is As Bad As My Previous World

In the aftermath of the brutal slaughter, the once-lively forest was eerily quiet. The only sounds that remained were the sounds of nature - the rustling of leaves, the chirping of crickets, and the gentle hooting of an owl hidden some distance away.
The hybrid bear, having completely eviscerated the knights' bodies, was now searching for new prey. Its eyes, glowing with an otherworldly red light, scanned the area, its heightened senses on full alert.
The silver-haired kitsune, hidden within the dense undergrowth and the fallen tree trunk, shivered involuntarily, her trembling form causing the leaves to rustle softly. Fear and anticipation danced together in her eyes as they strained her ears, listening intently for any signs of danger.
With a shaky breath, the kitsune muttered to herself, "Please, please, don't find me. I can't die here, not like this..."
Each passing moment felt like an eternity as the silver-haired kitsune waited, her heart pounding wildly in her chest. She listened intently, her sensitive ears straining to catch any sound that could herald the hybrid bear's approach.
"Please, stay away. Don't come any closer," the kitsune pleaded silently, her voice a mere whisper.
As the tension mounted, her whole body trembled with anxiety, her breathing shallow and ragged. Every rustle of leaves or snap of a branch made her flinch, her fear only escalating with every passing second. With a keen sense of scent, the hybrid bear sniffed the air, following a trail that eventually led it to the fallen tree trunk. Its massive form loomed over the trunk, blocking out the faint moonlight that filtered through the forest foliage.
The kitsune inside the trunk gasped, her heart sinking as the hybrid bear's looming presence cast a menacing shadow. The bear tilted its head, its red eyes locking onto the hidden kitsune.
Just as it was about to attack, the hybrid bear, its red eyes locking onto the glowing pink eyes of the kitsune, halted its approach. A moment of uncertain hesitation flickered in the bear's gaze as it seemed to sense the kitsune's plea.
With a strange, almost reluctant obedience, the hybrid bear slowly turned away, its massive form padding through the darkness and disappearing into the depths of the forest.
The kitsune inside the trunk, her heart racing with relief, couldn't help but utter a whisper, "He listened... He actually listened to me..."
The kitsune, driven by urgency, didn't dwell on how the hybrid bear managed to comprehend her words. With agility born of necessity, she extricated herself from the fallen tree trunk, her petite frame allowing for a swift escape.
Once free, the kitsune was assailed by a torrent of emotions that threatened to consume her. The sight of the dismembered knight's body and the blood splattered everywhere was too much to bear. She collapsed to her knees, her stomach heaving as she vomited. The crushing weight of grief and the fragile flicker of hope settled heavily upon her shoulders, a burden almost too great to endure.
"Inari," she whispered, her voice choked with emotion. "Please, great spirit... grant me the strength to break my bonds. Grant me the wisdom to overcome this darkness."
She closed her eyes, the silver pendant against her chest growing warmer as if Inari's presence was responding to her pleas.
The silver chain that bound her wrists suddenly shattered, the links falling away from her wrists with an almost audible snap.
The kitsune gasped, her eyes widening as she looked down at her now-free wrists. A rush of relief and disbelief washed over her, and she whispered a silent, whispered prayer of gratitude.
"Thank you, Inari..." she murmured, flexing her wrists as if testing the freedom that had been restored to her.
Once free, she delicately retrieved a necklace hidden beneath the neckline of her dress, holding it tightly against her chest as she closed her eyes. The silver pendant, adorned with a heart-shaped symbol and kitsune ears at its center, seemed to pulse with a silent promise.
Whispering her resolve, she murmured, "Mother and father, just a little longer. I will rescue you and the others, I promise."
The kitsune's heart pounded with determination, the silver pendant clenched tightly in her hand. With a newfound sense of purpose, she set off through the darkened forest, her petite form weaving in and out of the shadows.
She whispered a silent prayer to herself, her words carrying a mix of hope and determination as she moved deeper into the heart of the forest.
"Inari, great fox spirit, guide me true," she murmured. "Give me strength, wisdom, and courage until I can free my family from such evil."
Kon Kon
As she ran the sound of a fox's cry, "kon kon" echoed through the forest. The silver-haired kitsune's thoughts raced, her mind torn between hope and anxiousness. "Please, lead me home. Show me the way," she softly prayed, her voice a mere whisper in the silent forest.
As the night enveloped the forest in a cloak of darkness, the kitsune pressed on, her determination driving her forward. Every step brought her deeper into the heart of the forest, and she moved with a silent grace, her petite form blending in with the shadows.
With each passing moment, her resolve grew stronger, and she whispered a silent plea into the night. "Inari, give me the strength and wisdom to overcome every challenge. Watch over me and protect me, that I may succeed in my quest."
Kon Kon Kon Kon Kon Kon Kon Kon
The forest was vast and treacherous, and the kitsune navigated it with a honed sense of survival. She moved stealthily, avoiding the rustling of the leaves and the snapping of branches that could betray her presence.
In the depths of the forest, an atmosphere of ancient mystery lingered, and the kitsune could sense the very presence of the spirit within her heart. "Inari, guide my steps through the darkness," she whispered, her hand gently brushing against the silver pendant at her chest. "Protect me from all harm until I can return."
The night seemed to grow darker with each step, and the kitsune's keen senses were keenly focused on her surroundings, hyper-aware of every crackle of a leaf or the faintest whisper of a sound.
The necklace she clutched tightly began to grow unusually warm, and a gentle glow emanated from the pendant as if the spirit within recognized her presence.
"Inari, my guiding light," she whispered, her voice barely louder than a breath. "Please watch over me as I travel deeper into the unknown."
The kitsune's heart throbbed with anguish as she stumbled through the ruined terrain of her homeland, the sight of the destruction before her a devastating blow.
The once-vibrant village had been reduced to a smoldering wreckage, the buildings now reduced to smoking, crumbled ruins. The air was thick with ash and the acrid stench of charred wood and flesh.
As she moved through the wrecked remains, she could barely suppress the tears welling in her eyes. "Father, Mother..." she murmured, her voice trembling as she struggled to maintain her composure.
