Chapter 37:

Mutual hatred

Our Town in another world

A young 18-year old Monika clad in a typical maid uniform scowled as she carried stacks of boxes and shopping bags while following a proud and haughty 13-year old Muki. "M- Madam... Can't we throw all this in the car instead of walking around with it?" Monika begged.

Muki turned back and huffed. "And risk the hot car melting all my things? You always complain about the smallest things. What a joke of a servant you are."

"'Joke'!? I can't fucking hold all this shit!"

"You could if you tried. Now on to the next store," Muki huffed as she flicked one of her twintails.

In contrast to how she was now, Muki in her younger years was far more haughty and arrogant, dressing in fancy dresses and dress shoes and styling her hair in twintails. She had great academic skill, but her drive to do anything herself was non-existent. After all, her philosophy at the time was that the servants would do everything because she was elite and special.

Monika meanwhile, was more obedient and grounded in reality compared to her current self. Her combativeness was growing by the day though thanks in no small part to Muki's spoiled attitude.

"I'm 5 years older than her, and she doesn't even see me as human. I am human, dammit, and a human that can't carry all this shit! Maybe I should drop it all just to teach her a lesson," Monika thought as she began to sway from side to side.

...

"Why didn't you just call another servant to come? Did you think of maybe renting a cart? Muki bought some expensive stuff that you carelessly decided to smash!" Machiko fumed as she confronted Monika in the mansion's foyer.

"I just tripped! The weight was too much. Mu's too stupid to see that I'm a scrawny maid, not some roided bodybuilder."

"Then workout more."

"Think I have the time for that!? I'm stuck doing shit for you and your spoiled daughter!"

Slap!

"What a disgrace of a servant. You lash out at your masters, refusing to even apologize for your own incompetence and lies."

The hell am I lying about!?"

Machiko glared as she turned her head towards a sobbing Muki, who was sitting in a chair with a bandaged ankle. "You fell forward. You fell forward and hit Mu, causing her to sprain her ankle. If you were going to fall, it should have been to the side, or at the least, you should have called out to Mu and tried to throw the boxes out of the way to avoid harm coming to her. You didn't. You wanted things to fall on her."

"Serves the spoiled shit right!"

SLAP!

"You're treading a thin line! If I dismiss you, your life will be ruined. No more pay, no more living here, and no chances of ever getting employed again."

"You threatening me with your yen, you shitbag?"

"What employer do you think would hire someone that deliberately did harm to their master, then refused to own up to it? Cool your damn head in your room."

"I'll cool it in the dining room!"

Machiko clicked her tongue and ordered the other servants to drag Monika back and lock her in her room. As this happened, a young Jenna watched nervously from behind a doorway.

"Is the shouting over?" a young Yamane asked.

"It appears so, madam. Senior Monika has been vanquished to her room. I would advise against speaking with her within the hour."

"She sounded so frustrated. Mu's always pushing her with all her demands. Perhaps both need to apologize to each other."

Jenna turned to Yamane and somberly nodded. "You are years beyond your age, but those two are years below theirs. Perhaps with time they'd reconcile, but nothing will improve in the short-term. Madam Mu's ankle will inhibit her day-to-day life, worsening her mood against senior Monika. She wanted to participate in a dance recital, but now, she won't be able to. It's understandable the madam was so upset with her and reprimanded her so harshly. I hope things do improve, but it won't be happening within the month."

For the next few days, Monika was confined to house arrest and kept away from Muki, who was attended to by other servants. This was for both their sakes, however, their resentment for each other refused to go down. Eventually, Machiko decided to allow Monika to resume serving Muki thinking enough time had passed for them to try and reconcile, but had she'd known what incident would occur latter on that very day, she'd have fired Monika on the spot before she'd even taken a single step out of her room.

...

Pushing Muki along in a wheelchair through town, Monika glared as she fumed in her mind about how unfair everything was to her.

"Hey! Are you listening to me!? I want to go to the auditorium," Muki fumed as she slammed her elbow into the back of the wheelchair.

"To watch the recital? Not worth the effort. I've been pushing you all morning," Monika snarled.

"I'm going to dance there!"

"Huh? With that ankle? They won't let you even get backstage."

"They will when I pay them! I'm the star they need!"

Monika prepared to launch another insult, but paused and smiled instead. "Actually, dance. I'd love to see you fall down and get carried off on a stretcher again."

"I'll have them assist me!"

"And ruin the script?"

"I'm the only one that matters. Not to mention the show will be held again once I'm healed."

"Not even money would convince people to humor that much lunacy."

"I have cash, and wiring out your entire salary and savings is more than enough to sway the plebs that put on the show."

Monika came to a sudden stop, nearly sending Muki tumbling out of the wheelchair. Newfound hatred towards Muki coupled with the already raging storm had collided and formed into a natural disaster within her mind. She silently resumed walking, ignoring Muki's shouting and scouring the path ahead.

"What's your deal!? You're going to rough! I'm going to fall out!" Muki fumed as she held on to the arm rests for dear life.

Monika didn't care. Peering into an alleyway, she noticed a homeless man hunched over on the ground prodding an empty can with a knife. Anger consuming her in the spur of the moment, she charged into the alley and shoved the chair forward, sending Muki tumbling out towards the man.

"HOW DARE YOU STEAL FROM THE POOR, YOU IVORY TOWER, VERMIN!" Monika shouted before running away.

The homeless man spun around, anger and insanity oozing out of his bloodshot eyes as he stared down at Muki. "Damn elites... YOU TOOK EVERYTHING FROM ME!" he shouted as he shot up to his feet and charged towards Muki.

Terror engulfed Muki's face as she desperately tried to run. "NO! TAKE MY MONEY, GO AWAY!" she shouted as she hurled out all her cash on hand as she desperately tried to crawl away.

But the man didn't care about the money. His hatred and insanity ran too deep. Pinning Muki down violently with one hand, he pulled back the knife in his other and thrust it down hard into the right side of Muki's face.
