Chapter 14:

You gotta love misunderstandings

Uncanny Valley

Karaza stood for a minute behind the fence of an apiary, hesitating for a minute before entering, taking the first step.

A woman with a wet styled hair approached her while she was standing awkwardly and looking around.

"How can I help ya?"

"...I humbly request you to train me to be a beekeeper! I aim to prove I can handle such profession." She asked enthusiastically, almost like a soldier.

"Sure girl, you don't need to prove anything though. Let's make sure you're not allergic to bees first. " Patichia smiled, rolling her shoulder as a gesture to be followed.

Ryu shook hands with a new buyer, this time able to wrap the artwork he made. The secretary of a business woman walked away with a wrapped box.

In his way home he looked at his hexagono. 9450 moros where deposited. The dango sold for a 15000 moro before the auction house fees.

'Well they were right, it was a one hit wonder. At least its said and done so let's move past it.'

He thought, looking down at the stones of the sidewalk, worry hug him lightly despite the happening of the predicted.

As he entered the building Roxy was exiting it, walking like a ghost.

"Comrade," She whispered exhaustingly.

"Good work..."

'Never saw her like that.'

She laid down under a tree in the neighborhood park. Face down like a murdered body.

'I suck. I was too cocky, when talking humans can understand even if grammar is messed and words are not quite accurate. Translating ain't talking though!'

She let's a huge sigh, sitting down and opening a bag of fries she made.

'There aren't even training classes for translating. What should I do deman tree-san?'

She talked to the tree she leaned on.

'What you always do walking plant. You always say you suck at the beginnings.'

She listens thoughtfully while biting on a fry.

'I thought I'm too old to suck.'

'I thought age make you suck more.'

The smell of baked cookies hugs her when she enters the apartment, holding the only four books in the library about translation.

"Welcome back.. those some chunky books." He says, after putting the tray down and looking at her.

"Not as chunky as these jewels." She swallows, disjointed pupils wide with the desire for the berry cookies with lemon curd.

"When did you made these?" She reached her hand slowly like he wouldn't notice.

"Couple days ago then I froze them. Wait until I make tea." He moved the tray away from her.

She waited with teary eyes as he poured the tea.

"So these are the only books about translation in the city library?" He asked, stirring jam into his tea.

"Yeah, thrown in the storage room, and the assistant only fetched them because I helped her with math finals in the 11th grade."

"Do you know everyone registered in the population census?"

"Don't underestimate connection." She chomped on the cookie.

After the break she went to read the first book. Ryu's tendrils did the dishes while he struggled with his hexagono.

"Need help?" Roxy asked, eyes on the book.

"It depend, how much teasing I'm gonna get?"

"Not much since I suck now."

They sat together as she instructed him.

"Swipe with your eyes, like a horizontal eye roll."

He does so after the third attempt. Landing on the savings option page.

"Y-you have a savings account?!" Roxy said, overwhelmed with joy.

"The president opened it probably."

" I see..."

All his money was deposited to the savings account, and with his checking account empty he couldn't pay more than a certain amount.

"Are you sure you wanna take out some money? The profit rate is amazing since the money was sitting there for long.

She was correct, he had 117500 moros, which was more than what he earned from government orphan support, old jobs and selling art combined.

" Don't take it out please please please!" She hugged his arm and gave him the cute sad face as if it was her problem.

"Well, I gotta pay you rent and stuff."

"What rent?"

"Rent here, and unfortunately for you I'm not going back to a dorm room with three stinky dudes anytime soon." It was his turn to hug her with a cute face. A tendril handed her a cookie as a bribe.

"...I don't pay rent."

They stared at each other confused.

"You live here illegally?" He whispered after looking around.

"No I'm just house sitting for an old neighbor, she's in a foreign country now."

"When she's coming back?"

"Dunno, she got a situation and stuff."

"So we could become homeless anytime?" He looked at the hexagono quickly to deposit the money.

"The profit rate! NOoo!"

As she moved to stop him a violent shook wave slammed their heads, they lost balance even though they were sitting down. A bright white light flashed inside their eyeballs.

Ten minutes was used so they could recover.

"What was that?" Ryu hissed.

"Tornado effect." Her head was moving in circles.

"Vortex effect?"

"What vortex?"

"What cortex what?"

"Huh?"

"Huh?"

That continued for a while before they realized the tornado loomed a misunderstanding effects on anything spoken. They resorted to writing on paper.

-So what we gonna do?- Ryu wrote.

-We just need to wait, it'll fade in couple hours.-

-Are you sure?-

Roxy flew above the city, looking down as she sees something different.

"Its effecting a small area, not even the whole city." She stated, figuring out from Ryu's expression that the tornado effect didn't reach the sky.

She looked at the horizon in the opposite side, at something very far.

"Fantastico."

Karaza raised her heavy head, hissing in pain.

"What was that?"

After a glass of water she was back to almost normal.

'Glad this didn't happen in the apiary.' She thought looking at her allergy tests negative result.

'It's better to investigate the situation from here. Not risking going outside.'

She summoned her axe, closing the horizontal edge between the two dull blades to her forehead. The axe started shaking. Many voices talked in her head.

The two neighbors at the gate of her building were talking. Houses had the loudest conversations, the streets were quite after the sunset. Nothing seemed off.

'Pick further sound waves.'

Words got funkier, conversations couldn't be called that anymore and no one actually heard what was being said.

She switched her orientation upward, the quietness returned except for a familiar, slightly high pitched voice and another one that was deep and low. Talking in the sky.

"Imma go to the orange zone, I'll be back real quick."

"Why?"

"Well I had some idea for a while, time to test it."

He paused for a second before morphing back to his human shape. The blob turned into numerous grey tendrils clumping together in a rough human shape, four limbs and a head they took the stick of the broom as a new base, sitting on broomy.

"I know that's not how you do things, but lay the whole ground for me. I thought you needed me to awaken the monster you wanna fight?"

"It's Karabora monster."

"Yeah that one."

"Well that's the original plan, but it dawned on me, If I can make the tornado smash into the Karabora the collision will .."

"Turn us all to ashes?" He raised an eyebrow.

"No silly! wait that could happen." She giggled, he gives her the - I am not very supportive of your shenanigans today-  look.

"Actually two things might happen, either Karabora gets weaker without awakening or I find a way to awaken it without an apex predator."

The saying catch him off guard, he stays still like lightning hit him.

"And if it awaken? Are you ready to fight it?" He questions, tone slightly harsher.

"Probably. Why so grumpy?"

"It didn't cross me that our deal will end so soon, too sudden I guess. I wouldn't mind if you told me earlier."

She opened her mouth to say something, but she decided not to. She looks at her side.

"Don't say you just thought about this experiment." His voice was quite with disappointment, avoiding eye contact too.

"Yeah, you know better." She looked at him, an apologetic expression that hopes the other person understand.

Karaza puts her axe down, letting a pant as gathering sound waves from that far wasn't the easiest task.

'Getting rusty for sure..'

She swinged the axe thinking.

'Awakening' That word had her lungs forget how to function for a moment, her eyes moved from one spot to another randomly as she thought harder.

"It's fine she just gonna awaken the Karabora, nothing else." She whispers to herself, doing her best to rationalize.

"But what if it missed, what if the tornado hits something else?"

"No, that should be far enough." She did her best to not think what that referred to.

' What if wasn't? what if the radiation hit it?'

She swallows, and reaches for the golden apple to teleport.
