Chapter 13:

The Veil of the Abyss

ATHOMIS - A HACKER'S JORNEY INTO ANOTHER WORLD

The waters of the Shadow Abyss, at the heart of the Sea Kingdom, pulsed with restless energy, the luminescent algae on the cave walls casting shadows that seemed to dance with a life of their own. The current stirred, carrying echoes of storms ravaging the floating archipelagos above. The salty air was thick, laced with the scent of ancient rot, a reminder of the corruption eroding Aquilon since the First Great War. The glowing core of the Relic of Waters, floating where the Abyssal Leviathan had fallen, emitted a silver-blue light, but its energy felt unstable, as if something suppressed it. Mira, the Hero of Aquilon, held the relic cautiously, her green eyes fixed on Voryn, whose charismatic expression now twisted into something inhuman—a red glow pulsing in his pupils.“You’re not Voryn,” Mira said, her voice firm but tense. In ATHOMIS, she’d faced bosses with disguises, and the main plot always revolved around Demons manipulating the kingdoms’ cores. “You’re the Demon of the Depths, aren’t you? The same one controlling the Leviathan.”Seraphina, beside her, raised her spear, the glowing scar on her chest flaring with alarm. “Heroine, beware! He fooled us all!” Lyssia, the merfolk archer, readied her Current Bow, but doubt lingered in her eyes. “How did we not see this?” she muttered, guilt over her mistrust of Mira now mixed with anger. Korath, the Guardian of Depths, hesitated, his loyalty torn—he’d conspired with Voryn in secret, lured by promises of power. Before Mira could react, Voryn laughed, a guttural sound echoing as if from the abyss’s depths. His form unraveled, revealing the Demon of the Depths in its true essence: a humanoid creature with black scaly skin, eyes glowing like embers, and aquatic tentacles sprouting from its back, each pulsing with corrupted magic. “You’re perceptive, Heroine,” the Demon growled, its voice reverberating through the water. “But the Relic of Waters is mine. Aquilon will fall, like all kingdoms.”Mira activated Wave Fury, conjuring a whirlpool that enveloped the Demon, but its resistance surpassed the Leviathan’s. Its tentacles sliced through the whirlpool, unleashing black energy waves that threw Lyssia against the cave wall. Mira struck with a pressurized water spear, but the Demon dodged fluidly, retaliating with a blow that tore her scale armor, forcing her back in pain. “He’s faster than in the game,” she thought, heart racing. “And my powers aren’t keeping up.”Voices echoed from the cave’s entrance. Three figures emerged, members of the Order of the Deep Tides, an ancient secret organization protecting Aquilon’s core. The leader was Zyra, an elderly merfolk with white hair like sea foam and an enchanted conch amplifying water magic. Wise but rigid, she believed only the pure could wield the relic. Her skill, Abyss Echo, created sonic waves disorienting enemies. Beside her, Trennis, a young human with coral eyes and an enchanted net trapping targets, was idealistic but impulsive, eager to prove his worth. Finally, Kaelys, an aquatic elf with translucent skin, wielded a trident with Deep Light, blinding foes. Reserved but loyal, she followed the order’s code.“Heroine, you can’t fight alone!” Zyra shouted, unleashing Abyss Echo to destabilize the Demon. Trennis threw his net, trying to bind the tentacles, while Kaelys advanced with her trident. But the Demon was relentless, snapping the net and dodging the light, hurling Korath against a pillar with a tentacle. Mira, panting, noticed the relic in her hand pulsing stronger, as if responding to her resolve. “In ATHOMIS, the cores needed an emotional trigger,” she recalled, gripping the artifact. “My strength comes from protecting, not destroying.”Closing her eyes, Mira channeled Wave Fury not to attack but to connect with the Relic of Waters. A blinding glow erupted, and the relic awakened, transforming into a radiant scepter amplifying her magic. The abyss’s waters answered, forming a living storm around her. “You won’t take Aquilon!” Mira shouted, unleashing a colossal wave that engulfed the Demon, its scales corroding under the magical pressure. The Order of the Deep Tides joined the assault, Zyra amplifying the wave, Trennis binding the tentacles, and Kaelys blinding the enemy. The Demon roared but succumbed, its body dissolving into watery ash.Mira fell to her knees, clutching the scepter, breathless. “I… did it,” she murmured. Seraphina helped her up, while Lyssia, now convinced, bowed. “Forgive my doubt, Heroine.” Korath, ashamed, lowered his head. “I was wrong… I trusted the traitor.” Zyra approached, her expression softening. “You awakened the Relic of Waters. But the Demon wasn’t alone. In ATHOMIS, they served a greater power, one uniting the kingdoms against a common foe.”Mira frowned, recalling ATHOMIS’s main plot: the Demons were pawns of an entity called The Corruptor, manipulating the cores to destroy the kingdoms. “If that’s true, the other heroes… are they facing the same?” She looked at the scepter, feeling its connection to the other relics. “I need to find them.”
