Chapter 6:
A Prayer for the Reincarnated Moon Princess
This convinced him to come. Selena was just too pure and naïve. Even if Kasian was with them, he was probably at this point kissing some unknown woman from the club or maybe going even further. He was known to be a womanizer, and every time Leo brought that up, Kasian just brushed him off with the words that he was just jealous of him.
It took him a long time to get to the club. And when he finally arrived, he saw Mira drinking at the bar, sitting alone. He went directly to her. They were in the club, and the majority of the guests were dressed in their best party outfits. She, on the other hand, was dressed in simple jeans and a black top without sleeves. Her short brown hair framed her face and hid their sharp features.
“Hi, Mira.”
“Took you long enough,” she barked at him.
“Where is Selena?” he asked immediately. “Is she up, sitting in the boxes?”
The ground floor had a big dancefloor and bar. There was a staircase in the corner, leading to the top floor, where there were VIP boxes for guests who did not want to dance. They usually sit there, drinking until morning.
He turned to go up, but Mira grabbed him by the elbow.
“What?”
“You lost your chance,” she said solemnly.
“What’s that supposed to mean?”
“It's too late, you lost your chance.”
He could hear an alarm ringing in his head. He tore himself from her grip, going to the starcase. He was almost running up the spiral stairs, his head spinning. He went right to the place where they used to sit, expecting the words. And yet, what he saw completely shattered his world.
Selena was there. And Kasian, too. And they were kissing.
Leonard could feel bile rising in his stomach. What the hell was happening here?! They have known each other for years, and Kasian had never shown any interest in Selena. She was just too princessy for his taste.
He was just standing there, staring at them like some loser. Guests were going around him, some even shoved into him to have some space, but he did not care one bit. He was unmoving, like a statue.
His warmth was dissipating in the hot club air, the numbing coldness growing in him. Something, living deep down inside, woke up from the slumber. It rose and roared, devouring the fragile, precious feeling he had been hiding for so many years.
He wanted to charge forward, to pull those two apart, to yell, and to punch Kasian in his face. And yet, he did not do anything. He only trembled, his eyes watery.
“I am sorry, it's too late.”
He turned around in a daze. Mira was now standing next to him, frowning.
“Selena would never do that if she wasn’t serious about him,” he said.
Mira touched his shoulder.
“You knew about it?” he asked, disappointed. “Did she have a crush on him?”
She didn’t reply.
He laughed. Of course, she was crushing on Kasian. Which woman was not? They were both from wealthy families, and he was attractive to women. He couldn’t even count on his fingers how many times he heard female colleagues gossiping about him, imagining what they would do to him, what they would let him do to them.
“I am going home,” he said. “I had had enough.”
People had always come to her and asked for advice, and she would give it to them. And yet now, while seeing her own friend, she was just unable to say anything.
“Sorry for that, Leo.”
“It's not your fault, Mira. I had multiple chances to take her on a date, to try to deepen our relationship, but I was too scared to do so. I was afraid I would break our friendship, and that would be the end of all. At the end, I am still just a loser.”
She was watching him go down the stars, his shoulders hunched, his gaze empty.
She turned around to look at Selena and Kasian. Did Kasian's parents start talking about marriage? She could imagine something like that happening. That would explain why he suddenly made a move on her.
Her heart was broken today, too, but she was too prideful to start pitying herself. Instead, she came closer to them, took one of the drinks from the table, and threw it at them.
They finally tore themselves apart.
“Mira, what the hell?” Kasian yelled. “Now I am all wet and smell like alcohol. Do you have an idea how much those clothes cost?”
“I don’t know and I don’t care,” Mira replied. “You are an asshole, and I am sick of you.”
“Wait, stop!” Selena chimed in.
Her voice was too soft. She was scared, seeing two good friends fighting suddenly. Selena was always too oblivious to the things happening around her. This annoying trait of hers, Mira hated the most.
“I curse you,” she spat at Kasian. “I curse you to always run after those women you adore so much, but never feel any satisfaction, until you feel crazy. Until one day, you will do such a thing that someone will make you pay for it with what is most precious to you.”
“Whoa, Mira, you sounded just like an old witch now. Are you really cursing me?” he laughed.
He did not take her seriously at all.
“Yeah, I do. Die!”
She turned around and went back down the stairs. Arriving on the ground floor, she started running. She stormed out of the club, her eyes watery.
“Don’t you dare cry!” she barked. “He doesn’t deserve that at all!”
And yet, the tears were spilling down her cheeks. She wiped them away with her hand and raised her head. She saw Leonard standing outside, before the crosswalk.
The light was red. The cars were speeding up through the road, not caring at all about the speed limit in the city.
Leonard was looking at the cars, coming closer to the road. It looked like… as if he was going to step onto the busy road to get run over by a car.
Mira panicked. She started running in her heels, but then something strange happened.
The ground around her flashed. A circle appeared under her feet, locking her in place, in the barrier built out of purple light. People around her shouted in surprise. Unable to move, she started yelling desperately at Leonard to stop.
But he was still standing near the road. The same barrier was lighting up around him. But his was of a golden color. Seeing this, she felt relieved and closed her eyes. The world darkened around her. She disappeared into thin air.
