Chapter 32:
Relic Raiders
The first day of the one-week training course at the Giora Adventurer School has arrived!
Needless to say, Kaito was not happy about this. As he carried Iori to the school, alongside Khrom carrying Evona in his bed shield, he groaned as if he were trying to curse the school out of existence.
“Alright, we’re here, folks!” Khrom announced at the school gate. “It’s time to get out, Evona.”
“This is about to be the worst week of my life…” Kaito said, properly vocalizing his complaints.
After Evona left Khrom’s shield to be with Kaito and Iori, Khrom waved them goodbye. Iori was the only one who waved back as Kaito held his grouched face, and Evona still looked drowsy from just waking up.
“Who does he think he is? Our father dropping his kids off at school or something?” Kaito continued to vent.
“Come on, Kaito. I’m sure this will be a great experience!” said Iori, trying to cheer Kaito up.
Kaito wasn’t as optimistic as Iori was. Frustratingly, he turned to the school’s entrance, where a boy with short red hair stood. His arms were crossed, and his chin was up.
“So you guys are the so-called ‘recommended students,’” the boy spoke arrogantly. “I bet you three think you’re so special. Getting in by recommendation, already being adventurers, well, I have some news for you! I’m the top dog at this school, and your senior, so you better show me some respect!”
Kaito just looked at him with an annoyed face, Iori a confused one, while Evona yawned.
“Could this day get any worse?" Kaito thought.
“Oh? You think this is some joke?” the boy directed his attention to Evona’s yawn. He walked up to the group, saying, “How about I put you in your—”
Before he could finish his sentence, he was smacked on the back of his head by a girl with long, vibrant blue hair.
“Clenn! I specifically told you not to do this!” the girl scolded the boy named Clenn.
The girl then directed her attention towards Kaito’s group. She bowed and held the boy’s head down to bow with her.
“I’m so sorry about this,” she apologized. “My friend here has a dumb superiority complex and didn’t like hearing there were recommended students coming to the school.”
“It’s okay!” Iori answered. “I can understand why he’d be jealous.”
Finishing her apology, she and the boy straightened up to introduce themselves. The boy, still looking at Kaito’s group with disapproval.
“I’m Kana, and this is Clenn. We’ve been attending this school for a while, so feel free to ask us about anything!”
“Thank you!” Iori replied. “I’m Iori, that’s Evona, and this boy is Kaito. I hope we can all be friends!”
Kaito continued to look grumpy while Evona, finally waking up, gave a small wave.
“So Iori, I hope you don’t mind me asking, but does Kaito hate carrying you or something?” Kana was referring to Kaito, looking extremely annoyed.
“Oh, he’s just like this because he doesn’t want to go to school,” Iori informed Kana. “I’m pretty sure he enjoys carrying me since I can tell he’s feeling up my butt.
Kaito, being exposed, finally shook off his negative attitude.
“Uh… how about you guys show us to the main hall?” Kaito suggested directing the attention away from himself, but everyone was already looking with judging eyes.
In the main hall, there were a bunch of students waiting around. According to Kana, some were also taking the one-week course like Kaito’s group, while others had been attending for a while, like her and Clenn. Either way, everyone in the room would graduate after the week ends.
“Alright, everyone. Please focus on the front!” an adult, presumably school staff, announced to the students.
With the students quieting down, the staff member stepped back slightly.
The same feathered woman who had organized the tournament during the Giora Festival dropped from a revolving skylight. She proceeded to fly grandiosely throughout the hall before landing on the pedestal in front of the student body.
She began her speech. “I welcome all you students, new and old, to the Giora Adventurer School. I am Headmistress Airiel, and thus, I will be in charge of you all this upcoming week. Whether you are an experienced adventurer or an inspiring one, I hope what you learn in our school will help you excel in your future.”
Headmistress Airiel and the rest of the school staff bowed to the student body as she finished her introduction. After their bow, the staff walked down from the pedestal to approach the side halls, while the Headmistress continued her instructions.
“Everyone, please fill out these forms based on what class you are or wish to be.” Mid-instructions, Airiel sent forms to every student utilizing controlled gusts of wind. “We will assign classes accordingly. Also, if you wish to be in the same class as your friends, feel free to suggest this on the form. Just make sure you don’t use this as a means to slack off.”
The gaze the Headmistress gave the students upon saying that last sentence was sharp. It was apparent that students would be dealt with accordingly if they misbehaved.
“You can fill out the form as you tour through the school. Head to your nearest side door to accompany one of our staff members, who will give you the tour. I hope to see you all excel.” Headmistress Airiel finished her instructions, flying back upwards through the skylight she entered from.
“Let’s all take the same classes, guys!” Iori suggested.
“I don’t think we’re all suited to learn the same curriculum,” Kaito mentioned.
“Oh, you don’t have to worry about that,” Kana informed. “The lessons are pretty general. The information on your class is used to teach you more effectively in training.”
“I guess we’re all going to be in the same group then,” Kaito concluded, solidifying that everyone would stick together.
