Chapter 1:

Chapter 1

God Bargainer

It was a beautiful day to start the school year off. The weather was warm, and not even a single cloud covered the sky. In the small urban area, the school was located beside a massive, well-maintained park.

It was the last year for Fernic. Since there was no required dress code in the school, he wore just light colored shorts and a simple shirt. As he walked, he was reading a small book. And at the same time, he had his earphones in and listened to music, completely isolating himself from the outside world.

The school's gate was only a few dozen meters away, and he was already walking beside its fences. As he walked, a biker nearly passed by him, almost hitting him, but he was so immersed in his book that he didn't even react at all.

"A new year, huh..." A light mumble came from Fernic as he flipped to the next page. "I wonder how different it will be now that things have changed."

He was already right in front of the large gate. It opened to a slight yard, though it had no greenery; it was mostly concrete and bricks. It was nothing much to behold, but Fernic didn't even glance at it at all, and then stepped forth through the gate.

At that very moment, as his feet passed by the gate, he felt a strangely powerful gust of wind; it had enough strength to slightly mess his black hair up quite a bit. Just as suddenly the gust came, it vanished as well, but Fernic was not bothered; he didn't even move to fix his hair.

Due to the music he was listening to, he only heard some light, inaudible mumbling from behind him, but he just walked forth.

Though he didn't look ahead of him, he knew when the door would come, so he extended his left hand, grabbed its handle, and opened it. It felt slightly different than before, as it was larger and moved slightly harder, but still, he stepped inside. He let the door slam closed behind him, and he even felt its light gust. Only then did he close his book.

"The hell is this?"

He was not in his school; instead, it seemed that he was inside some sort of church. A person who seemed like a nun was walking towards him with a wide smile. With a deep sigh, Fernic stopped the music and pulled his earphones out.

At that very moment, the door behind him opened and three other people rushed in. One wore robes and some sort of larger hat, and the other two were clad in heavy metal armour. The moment they entered, they all took off their headwear.

"Oh, great hero!" The one wearing robes spoke up. His voice was shaking and just barely audible. "Please help us fend off the evil demons attacking our...."

Hearing his voice, Fernic turned around, completely ignoring the nun who had just arrived. Fernic gazed dead into the robed man's eyes, upon which he was unable to continue talking.

"You summoned me to clean up your mess?"

"N-no.... I-it is a matter of life and... Great hero p..."

The robed man tried speaking again, but then was unable to continue due to Fernic's iron-cold gaze.

"Quite calling me a hero!"

The robed man's mouth moved, but he was unable to produce any sound at all, and then the nun gently grabbed Fernic's shoulder.

"I understand that you are confused, but..."

She tried to ease the situation, but she was interrupted as well.

"The hell am I confused! I am angry! It has barely been a few weeks since I returned home from another world, and just as my new year was about to begin, I was summoned again?!"

Fernic replied coldly as he turned back to face the nun. Then his gaze moved over to a massive statue, located far behind the nun by the podium. It depicted a young man holding an apple in his open palms.

"I guess this must be some sort of temple, right?"

"That is correct!"

The nun replied, though her voice was weak as well.

"Great, it seems your lazy god had the audacity to just let the lackeys do the greeting! I demand to speak to YOU personally, or I will be angry!"

Fernic's voice echoed in the church as he pointed straight at the large statue. The four other people gasped simultaneously. The two knights even got ready to draw their weapons, but suddenly, Fernic was enveloped by a dazing golden light, temporarily blinding him, but once he opened his eyes, he found himself in another area once again.

A seemingly infinite white room, he was still pointing where previously the statue was; however, in its place, a man stood. His hair was so bright that one would assume it was made of pure gold. His golden eyes glared straight at Fernic's dark blue eyes.

"You are a fascinating individual, I must admit! So daringly demanding an audience with a god. Are you perhaps not afraid to face my wrath?"

The man's voice was resonating in the strangely endless room. However, despite the threatening tone, Fernic stood firm, and instead a grin spread across his face.

"I am perfectly aware of your powers, capabilities, and most importantly, your reach! The previous god I met was more courteous and had provided a sufficient insight into your powers, so skip the threats!"

"Interesting! Fine, then I will personally inform you about your mission! I want you to defeat the fallen human, some call them the demon lord. Now you can go!"

"How tightfisted of a god you are. Unfortunately, there is no such thing as free labour! You are technically hiring me as a mercenary to deal with your problem, which is not exactly cheap; in addition, I am considered a veteran already, so we can double my fees as well."

"You DARE?"

The God roared as a powerful burst of golden energy erupted from his entire body, and the whole world started shaking; however, Fernic's grin only grew wider.

"I told you that threatening will get you nowhere! I know that you are prohibited from killing summoned people; I also know that you are unable to summon another person while I am alive, and thanks to one of my previous rewards, I no longer age. So I have plenty of time to waste. So you either make an offer I am satisfied with, or I will just wait around and see how this whoever evil lord wreaks havoc in your world."

Fernic sat down calmly as he continued to grin. Feeling powerless, the golden light completely vanished from around the god, but his head grew a tomato-red shade.

"I have plenty of time to take your time."

Another taunting response came from Fernic, who dropped his earphones beside him, and at that very moment, they completely vanished with a blueish glow. Then he opened his book and continued reading right where he had previously left off, completely ignoring the fuming deity before him.
