Chapter 16:

Caught up

Myriad Variations

[Noon past four\\Basil port outskirts]

The sun was still up, the humid air gleaned with anticipation as Kyle gripped onto his shield, the shield was enchanted by Alicia just a while before, just a normal spire shield now glowed a translucent blue, it seemed sturdy and well defined then before.

"Let's get into it, we have not much time on our hands, and we need to make up for it, soo let's get going.." high spirited enough Luke tried to raise the morale a bit more.

As the other two, looked at him positively, our boy was gleaming with anticipation as it being his first time hunting for wyverns and the spirited loots it dropped which was highly valuable and needed by a lot..

It was also an new experience for him as he will learn a lot, maybe if possible try out his new spells which he acquired a while ago, he didn't name it yet but sure was hoping to name one day when he mastered it's pattern and way, but for now it was just an overpowered spell which fired a crazy random projectile which was slightly more or less uncontrollable each time. As to what caused it to grow at such pace or not consume a single ounce of mana still remained a mystery for our boy...

As he pondered on the topic, he knew what he has to be doing now and in the future.

Controlling the spell was one of the top priority goals for him, with it's enough obliterative capabilities, there was more than a chance it could missfire, miss the target or get himself and his loved ones self distructed with it.

And for now, all he could do is learn and apply as he forge forward with his like family like teachers to help him improve and avoid all the mishaps he thinks of.

Now was passing by waiting for none, as they have all now prepared, a fellow group of adventurer passerbys approached them from the side as they walked downhill slowly, injured enough to notice by their walks yet stood strong. A knight in a worned out metal armor with arrows sticking at multiple spots, a female elf mage dark robed, with bruises all over and a male archer with bandaging his forehead covering his right eye up, with blood seeping through.

Luke walked towards them, offering aid all he could, as to forcebly handling them potions and softly asking as to what had happened and could be done, yet the knight refused the help and with a grunting yet tired struggling voice answered:

"Uhh it seems your traveling with a child, we suggest against it as an advice of sorts, sorry but we couldn't accept your help as we are prime guild members dispatched for a dungeon deep in the woods, and all the details within needs to be confidential. We couldn't accept any help or to tell anything of it and straightly report directly to the guild, the place is been guarded by knights and restricted to party around as well, we suggest not to enter out of curiosity or greed of any sorts".

"Well we were already not planning to enter, we had a different quest across the forrest, as to slay the wyverns which reside there, we just hoped to help you, not that we have a problem or plan to enter deep within the woods or anything" Luke replied worried yet answered strongly still worrying about what was happening up ahead..

As the small talk came up to an end, the wounded party slowly walked of their sight.

"Ahh well now this was something we definitely didn't need before our hunt atop the mountains..." gently looking at the other two, he thought to himself whether this will, let some stray thought up Kyle's head or something.

Yet it was not something which happened, unfortunately enough it was worse thing which happened. Our boy seemed to be grining, grining in a weird way as of to something mischievous.

Alicia had exactly accurately guessed what his this kean of a boy he raised was thinking of, she had been stayed quiet for a while now, but now was not the time, as she walked up in front of Kyle, faced him face to face, her face was of anger and anguish, yet she didn't stuttered a bit and cried out loud and clear :

"I know what your thinking, Kyle, before you say anything else, the answer to every question you ask untill we reach atop the mountains, remains a clear and loud (NO)".

"WHAT!?, I didn't say anyth-          Well whyyyyy, I just thought a little peak would-". Kyle replied abruptly and in a highly questioning manner..

"NO.  That's all I'm going to say, let's continue our quest we are supposed to be on and came here for..." Alicia replied loudly, not uttering a single word and moving up ahead as Luke and Kyle watched her moved ahead.....

Kyle softly now turning his head towards Luke, teary eyes face supporting his facial features..

"Well, Alicia said it sooooo no help from me..." Luke shrugged a bit sad yet moved and started following Alicia up ahead...

Kyle now with no hope whatsoever, gave up the convincing act and moved on following the both of them, as they climbed up the mountains via a trail through the loose forrest canopy.

It's been almost twenty minutes now, as they were seeming to exit the woods a few more knights emerged through the the jungle from beside, they were clear, no wounds, clean Armour, lances in their hands as they passed by discussing of what it seemed to be about the dungeon which they had known about from the adventurers they met earlier before.

They did not stop yet passed by them straight ahead, a normal mood it seemed what they had, they talk was light, all tries of Kyle while walking of eavesdropping on them seemed tobe futile as he couldn't hear much more than that of the wounded party which passed by them.

It was yet so not convincing for Kyle to indulge and made him a lot sad as it seemed.

Therefore what the conclusion our boy reached as a wise kid he was supposed to be was not to go forward with the dungeon anymore, yet while returning if he were to encounter something, he might as well have a small lookie...

It's now been, a hour or so their trails from the forest ended and a stony path had started as it seemed, the lush greenery and wild life noises which were normal uptil now has now stopped and hard rocky edges and heat was all which they seem to feel.

Between the boulders and sharp rock complexes seemed to be slightly less unforgiving green shruby spots, it had shade it seemed as nothing in sight all of them decide to move and take the shade. Placing their bags below, and feeling the cool, they rested and planned for the hunting spots they cover up ahead.

Luke and Alicia had taken theses missions countless number of times before not here yet on different spots each time as fate prevailed. Continuing to stay cautious, they planned for mapping of the local area on a ground map they had taken from the town, the spots were clear by the knowledge both of his parents possessed of past.

They soon jotted down the spots which they, looked up while climbing and surveying around, and hoped to find a few and not more than what they expect. According to them this was not the nesting season, or breeding time so no aggressiveness or odd gathering would be seen as they hoped.

Soon moving ahead, they flowed the path towards their first hunting spot, it was a small cave in side of the mountain, there played a nest, but none seem to be nearby, no animal or wyverns to be precise, as they guessed, for it to be either went for food or an abandoned nest to be precise...

But the silence was uncanny, in more than one way was they decide not to approach and look for the second spot.

Suddenly a loud roar is heard, a screeching voice then followed by and not but within a second, a strong whoosh is felt by Kyle, a hard crashing sound just after a bell chime is heard as Kyle faces behind he finds all three of them within the Jaws of the wyverns strongly grasping and tightening, nothing but a thin barrier remained between the strong sharp teeth  the jaws and the three of them.

Alicia seemed to be holding the bell as she yet stood still strong with the bell, she had just rung it a few moments before the wyverns approached, it was life saving.. She stood still strong there smiling as her silky brown hair flowed through the air which got caught up, now shined bright but the barriers light as she smiled a little uttering:

"Well I said it already, My barrier is far more useful then those of your puny shields..."
